00:00:36 There's an old Native American proverb that says, inside every person,
00:00:41 there are two bears, forever locked in combat for your soul.
00:00:46 One bear is all things good, compassion, love, trust.
00:00:52 The other is all things evil, fear, shame, and self-destruction.

00:01:42 I have to go help them.
00:01:44 >> No, no, dad, please.
00:01:45 >> Danny.
00:01:46 >> Don't leave me alone.
00:01:47 >> Danny, I have to go back.
00:01:50 Stay here.

00:03:28 [MUSIC]
00:03:38 Hello?
00:03:40 Let me out of here.
00:03:42 >> Relax, Danny.
00:03:44 I'm on my way to you.
00:03:45 [MUSIC]
00:03:51 >> Where am I?
00:03:53 Where is my family?
00:03:54 >> I know you're scared, but you're safe now.
00:03:57 If I could come in, I'll explain.
00:04:00 Would that be all right?
00:04:02 [MUSIC]
00:04:11 >> Doors, infirmary.
00:04:13 [MUSIC]
00:04:22 >> Hi, Danny.
00:04:24 I'm Dr. Reyes.
00:04:26 If you take a seat, I'll free your hand.
00:04:29 [MUSIC]
00:04:39 Danny, what I'm about to tell you is going to be very difficult.
00:04:47 [MUSIC]
00:04:49 An F5 tornado touched down on your reservation.
00:04:52 [MUSIC]
00:04:54 >> No.
00:04:56 >> You're the sole survivor of a terrible tragedy.
00:04:59 >> No, no.
00:05:00 [MUSIC]
00:05:03 It was growling.
00:05:05 Something was chasing us.
00:05:07 >> What?
00:05:08 [MUSIC]
00:05:11 Sometimes trauma makes us remember things that aren't real.
00:05:15 [MUSIC]
00:05:19 Here.
00:05:20 I think this may be yours.
00:05:22 [MUSIC]
00:05:25 I'm really sorry.
00:05:27 [MUSIC]
00:05:41 Why didn't I just die with them?
00:05:44 Why me?
00:05:46 >> Survivors' guilt is a common reaction to trauma.
00:05:49 We look for reasons.
00:05:51 Most of the time, we find none.
00:05:54 But the reason you survived is because you're a very uncommon girl.
00:06:01 Your reservation was wiped off the face of the earth.
00:06:05 But you made it out with barely a scratch.
00:06:10 Do you know what mutants are?
00:06:14 Mutation most often occurs in puberty.
00:06:17 You might spend the first 13 years of your life relatively normal.
00:06:23 And just like that, you come of age and discover your true nature.
00:06:30 >> What's my true nature?
00:06:32 >> We'll have to figure that out together.
00:06:38 >> And how do you know I'm a mutant?
00:06:40 >> The man I work for has a way of recognizing new mutants
00:06:43 the moment their condition reveals itself.
00:06:46 And that's how we discovered you and your fellow patients.
00:06:52 You're not alone, Danny.
00:06:54 [MUSIC]
00:06:59 >> This is a facility for young mutants like yourself.
00:07:03 Teams who need some extra care before they can go on to live healthy adult lives.
00:07:11 There's some warm clothes, toiletries.
00:07:20 >> How long do I have to stay here?
00:07:22 >> Until they decide you're not a danger.
00:07:25 >> Danger to who?
00:07:27 >> Yourself.
00:07:34 You've been through a lot.
00:07:37 Get some rest, okay?
00:07:39 We'll talk more in the morning.
00:07:42 >> Dr. Reyes, there's really no one left.
00:07:50 >> But you're in a safe place now.
00:07:53 Nothing can hurt you in here, Danny.
00:07:56 Good night.
00:07:58 [MUSIC]
00:08:13 >> Yesterday I asked you to think about the first time your mutation manifested.
00:08:20 Would anyone like to share?
00:08:23 Sam?
00:08:25 Liana?
00:08:29 Roberto?
00:08:31 Rain?
00:08:34 Look, we can't help each other unless we talk to each other.
00:08:39 I've said this a hundred times.
00:08:41 This program can't help you if you refuse to participate.
00:08:46 So, Rain, why don't you start?
00:08:52 >> I --
00:08:58 >> Please join us, Danny.
00:09:02 This is our new patient, Danielle Moonstar.
00:09:08 >> Oh, serious.
00:09:12 >> Let's do our best to make her feel at home.
00:09:15 Go ahead, Rain.
00:09:20 >> I was 13.
00:09:26 I remember running through the woods.
00:09:31 >> How did you feel?
00:09:33 >> Free.
00:09:36 Like the most free I'd felt my whole life.
00:09:42 But guilty, too.
00:09:46 >> Why guilty?
00:09:49 >> Because I knew it was bad.
00:09:54 I went to Reverend Craig to see if he could pray it out of me.
00:09:59 He asked me to show him, so I changed.
00:10:04 >> And what did Reverend Craig do?
00:10:10 >> Beat me about half to death.
00:10:13 Said I was a witch.
00:10:15 I was going to hell.
00:10:25 >> Would anyone else like to share their first time?
00:10:29 >> New girl.
00:10:31 How about the brio?
00:10:33 >> Drugs, I bet.
00:10:35 Or an info, maybe.
00:10:36 Hopefully.
00:10:38 >> Keep behaving exactly like you are right now, and we can all just spend the day in solitary.
00:10:45 I want all of you to think very carefully about how you'd like to use your time here.
00:10:51 And how long you want the time to be.
00:10:55 Ileana, since you're already up, why don't you show Danny around?
00:10:59 >> And why do I have to?
00:11:02 >> Because I'm asking you.
00:11:07 >> How long have you been here?
00:11:10 Are there any other doctors?
00:11:14 Why are you --
00:11:17 >> What's that, Lockheed?
00:11:21 >> Oh, I know.
00:11:24 I hate her, too.
00:11:35 >> Dr. Reyes!
00:11:40 Main building.
00:11:41 Dorms, chapel, if you believe in that shit.
00:11:44 And garden.
00:11:46 Don't know how to grow weed, do you?
00:11:48 >> No.
00:11:51 >> What kind of Indian are you?
00:11:53 >> Cheyenne.
00:11:55 >> I wasn't actually asking.
00:12:03 >> You're my lookout.
00:12:12 >> Where are we?
00:12:13 >> Who knows?
00:12:15 Dr. Reyes always says the closest town is 20 miles away.
00:12:19 But she could be lying to keep us from trying to escape.
00:12:25 >> There's no fence.
00:12:27 >> No.
00:12:28 No fence.
00:12:30 >> Nothing between you and freedom.
00:12:41 >> Run, you girl, run!
00:12:49 Faster!
00:12:57 >> Ah!
00:13:23 >> Oh, this isn't the hospital, Pocahontas.
00:13:28 It's a cage.
00:13:30 And now you're trapped in it forever.
00:13:37 Man, I really should have warned you.
00:13:48 >> Ah!
00:13:59 >> Ah!
00:14:09 >> Ah!
00:14:19 >> I have to go home.
00:14:20 >> No, dad, please.
00:14:21 >> Let me.
00:14:22 >> Survivors' guilt is a common reaction to trauma.
00:14:25 >> Stay here.
00:14:26 You're the sole survivor.
00:14:55 >> I'm sorry.
00:14:57 >> I'm sorry.
00:15:00 >> I'm sorry.
00:15:03 >> I'm sorry.
00:15:06 >> I'm sorry.
00:15:34 >> Get out of here.
00:15:35 Sorry.
00:15:36 I didn't mean to scare you.
00:15:43 Wow, this is really high up.
00:15:47 A fall from here would mess you up.
00:15:50 It would kill me.
00:15:52 Instantly.
00:15:53 I wouldn't feel a thing.
00:15:56 I want to get out of here, too.
00:15:59 But not like this.
00:16:02 My home is gone.
00:16:05 My dad's dead.
00:16:08 Where I'm from, we believe suicides go straight to hell.
00:16:14 Always kind of scared me out of giving it a go.
00:16:17 I don't want to be here.
00:16:19 I want to be with my family.
00:16:22 If they're gone and you're here, maybe it's for a reason.
00:16:28 Maybe it's not time to be with them just yet.
00:16:32 I'm all alone.
00:16:37 There's two people up here.
00:16:41 You call me a nobody.
00:16:45 Please.
00:16:47 It's going to get better.
00:16:50 I promise.
00:17:18 Let's live a little longer, Danny Moonstar.
00:17:24 Danny, where were you?
00:17:28 I was just showing her the chapel.
00:17:30 No one is ever to be accounted for, Raine.
00:17:32 You know that.
00:17:33 I'm sorry, Dr. Reyes.
00:17:36 Okay.
00:17:40 Did I just get you in trouble?
00:17:42 It's okay.
00:17:43 She likes me.
00:17:44 I'm one of the good ones.
00:17:45 Me and Sam.
00:17:56 Holy shit, I thought he just exploded.
00:17:59 You know, that's his thing.
00:18:01 He can blast off.
00:18:02 Zero to 100 like a cannonball.
00:18:07 Not so good at landing, though.
00:18:09 Is this like practice?
00:18:12 I don't know.
00:18:14 Sometimes it seems like he's out here just trying to hurt himself.
00:18:20 He grew up in a small town in Kentucky.
00:18:22 Did really well in school, but had to drop out to work in the mines with his dad.
00:18:26 Helped the family and all.
00:18:28 Poor guy.
00:18:29 Right?
00:18:30 Poor guy.
00:18:32 And then there's Roberto.
00:18:34 His family is like the richest family in Brazil.
00:18:38 You have a good chin, you.
00:18:40 Thanks, doggie.
00:18:41 Probably lived in this suite life before he got here.
00:18:44 Something must have gone really wrong.
00:18:47 What's his power?
00:18:48 He won't tell.
00:18:50 But he's got something.
00:18:52 Parents sent him here to be cured.
00:18:54 Is there a cure for being an asshole?
00:18:56 Maybe it's just the crazy one.
00:18:58 No.
00:18:59 That's what's taking.
00:19:06 Well, I really enjoyed spending the day with you, Danny, but I should go.
00:19:10 We're not supposed to be in each other's rooms.
00:19:12 Why is she always watching us?
00:19:16 For our own good.
00:19:18 She means well.
00:19:20 She's trying to help us.
00:19:21 If you follow the treatment, you'll get out of here, Danny.
00:19:25 Probably before the rest of us cuckoos.
00:19:29 Well, night.
00:19:33 Rain?
00:19:37 Thank you for helping me.
00:19:40 What do I know?
00:19:42 Maybe we both should have jumped.
00:19:49 [music]
00:20:13 This dude is really trimming down the wardrobe.
00:20:16 Every time you hear your shirt gets dirty, you just throw it away.
00:20:23 Here.
00:20:24 It's all yours.
00:20:27 Cool.
00:20:30 Was it scary?
00:20:32 Working in the mines?
00:20:34 Yeah.
00:20:36 Yeah, sure.
00:20:39 [music]
00:20:54 I got it.
00:20:58 Couldn't pay me a million dollars to go in one of those things.
00:21:02 I couldn't pay you a million dollars anyway.
00:21:04 When we get out of here, I'll spot you.
00:21:06 The folks are good for it.
00:21:08 Good night, Kentucky.
00:21:10 Night, man.
00:21:14 [music]
00:21:26 [music]
00:21:46 [music]
00:21:56 Hello?
00:22:00 Somebody!
00:22:16 [music]
00:22:36 [music]
00:23:00 Dad?
00:23:04 Samuel?
00:23:07 What did you do?
00:23:11 [screaming]
00:23:14 [gunshots]
00:23:17 [groaning]
00:23:20 [music]
00:23:30 [music]
00:23:50 [music]
00:24:04 There aren't any cameras in here, are there?
00:24:07 Only safe place in the building.
00:24:09 But there could still be mics, so...
00:24:11 [music]
00:24:29 Wow, that's some serious body art.
00:24:34 Tattoo wasn't made for that.
00:24:37 It wasn't my idea.
00:24:41 What's it stand for?
00:24:50 I'm sorry, I don't want to talk about it.
00:24:57 [music]
00:25:10 [snoring]
00:25:15 [groaning]
00:25:19 Control.
00:25:28 Control.
00:25:38 Control.
00:25:47 Control.
00:25:54 Control.
00:26:00 And...
00:26:06 Control.
00:26:10 I mean, I have one arm. It takes two.
00:26:17 We can do this.
00:26:22 Hey, standing rock.
00:26:25 You on the buffalo wing?
00:26:28 You people love buffalo, don't you?
00:26:30 Geez, Ellie, will you just leave her alone?
00:26:32 No.
00:26:33 It's okay.
00:26:36 Standing rock.
00:26:38 That's a good one.
00:26:40 More original than Pocahontas.
00:26:44 That was huge in fifth grade.
00:26:47 You don't scare me.
00:26:49 My dad told me about bitches like you.
00:26:51 Aw.
00:26:54 Well, here.
00:26:56 Why don't you show us on the puppet where daddy touched you?
00:27:00 Lock it!
00:27:01 Hey, guys, come on!
00:27:02 You keep my father's name out of your mouth, bitch!
00:27:06 You don't know anything about me.
00:27:08 Do you know anything?
00:27:09 Sixteen years old and doesn't even know her power.
00:27:11 Seems like that mutant period should have kicked in by now.
00:27:13 Leave her alone.
00:27:14 I'm helping her. This is therapy.
00:27:16 Get your hands off me.
00:27:17 Or you'll what?
00:27:19 Let's find out.
00:27:20 What are you gonna do, huh?
00:27:23 Bitch!
00:27:28 Isiana, don't!
00:27:31 You know the rules.
00:27:34 No powers in here.
00:27:35 And definitely no fighting.
00:27:40 Sorry, Doctor.
00:27:42 I thought maybe Danny was invincible.
00:27:45 Just wanted to see if I was right.
00:27:47 Solitary.
00:27:48 Both of you.
00:27:49 But it wasn't done as--
00:27:51 Everyone else, lights out in ten.
00:27:57 I'll see you in the morning.
00:28:00 I'll see you in hell.
00:28:05 Come on.
00:28:15 What's that, a locket?
00:28:18 Don't be scared.
00:28:23 We'll go to our special place, okay?
00:28:29 The Smiling Men can't get us in their special place.
00:28:42 [woman singing]
00:28:58 [thunder]
00:29:06 [wind]
00:29:22 [alarm]
00:29:32 [wind]
00:29:42 [thunder]
00:29:52 [wind]
00:30:02 [screaming]
00:30:08 Danny?
00:30:12 What's happening to me?
00:30:16 [screaming]
00:30:30 You're clearly manifesting something.
00:30:32 But we need to do more tests to find out what it is.
00:30:35 It's okay.
00:30:36 I'm a doctor.
00:30:38 Actually, I come from a family of doctors.
00:30:41 My mother was a vet.
00:30:44 A lot of pets came in with rattlesnake bites.
00:30:48 Did you know baby rattlesnakes are more dangerous than adult ones?
00:30:54 They haven't learned how to control how much venom they secrete.
00:30:58 Even the mutants we call heroes today,
00:31:01 when they first got their powers,
00:31:04 chances are they hurt someone.
00:31:07 That's why new mutants are dangerous.
00:31:11 And they need to be--
00:31:12 Walked up?
00:31:15 Sequestered from average humans for their safety and ours.
00:31:24 Good pressure.
00:31:28 [footsteps]
00:31:42 [door creaks open]
00:31:45 [door closes]
00:31:51 Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned.
00:31:56 It's been a week since my last confession.
00:31:58 My superior runs a facility for gifted mutants.
00:32:01 You could move there after this if you wanted to.
00:32:04 Rain said I could even get out of here faster if I follow your program.
00:32:09 I've noticed you and Rain have taken a liking to each other.
00:32:13 That's good.
00:32:14 She's a good influence.
00:32:17 And she's right.
00:32:18 It's important we find out exactly what your power is
00:32:22 so we can help you control it.
00:32:28 I must have failed twice.
00:32:31 I lied to Dr. Reyes, and now he's up in the vents again.
00:32:36 [door creaks open]
00:32:40 Hello?
00:32:46 I'm gonna say one "Our Father" and two "Hail Mary's," okay?
00:32:53 Hello?
00:32:56 [footsteps]
00:33:06 Who's there?
00:33:08 Witch.
00:33:11 You witch! I'll fly your flesh from your bone!
00:33:16 Demons can't come in churches. Demons can't come in churches.
00:33:19 Demons can't come in churches.
00:33:21 [breathing heavily]
00:33:25 [knocking]
00:33:30 Hey.
00:33:31 Hey.
00:33:32 Where have you been?
00:33:35 Are you okay?
00:33:37 Yeah.
00:33:39 Just needed some time to myself.
00:33:41 Come on.
00:33:43 Where are you guys going?
00:33:45 Reyes is asleep, so we're going up to the attic.
00:33:47 Then never mind. You're not invited.
00:33:49 Come on, Ailee. Come on, we'll show you.
00:33:54 Whatever.
00:34:05 So you guys hang out in an attic?
00:34:08 Yeah.
00:34:09 It's one of the only places Reyes can't watch us.
00:34:11 It's full of cool shit from back before this was even a place for mutants.
00:34:15 Let's play a little game.
00:34:31 Dare.
00:34:32 You can't say "there."
