00:06 Welcome to WatchMojo,
00:08 and today we're counting down our picks
00:10 for the plot points, characters,
00:12 and moments from House of the Dragon Season 1
00:14 that you should keep in mind
00:16 before Season 2.
00:18 "No."
00:20 "I want you to put out your eye."
00:22 "It's payment for mine."
00:28 The Greens
00:30 First of all, it's important to remember
00:32 the major factions, beginning with the Greens.
00:34 The currently crowned king in
00:36 King's Landing is Aegon Targaryen II.
00:38 "Aegon the King!"
00:40 The slimeball's biggest supporters
00:46 include his immediate family,
00:48 such as his mother, Dowager Queen Alicent,
00:50 and his grandfather, Otto Hightower.
00:52 Then there are siblings
00:54 like his sister-wife, Helene,
00:56 and his fearsome brother, Aemond One-Eye.
00:58 "Why would you say such a thing before these people?"
01:00 "I was merely expressing how proud I am of my family, Mother."
01:02 "I was merely expressing how proud I am of my family, Mother."
01:04 Kristen Cole, the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard,
01:06 is another close supporter,
01:08 as is Laris Strong,
01:10 noted torturer and spymaster.
01:12 The Greens also have considerable support
01:14 from major houses,
01:16 including Houses Lannister, Baratheon,
01:18 Strong, and of course, Hightower.
01:20 Going into Season 2,
01:22 the Greens have the edge in manpower
01:24 and among the people,
01:26 since Aegon sits on the Iron Throne.
01:28 Opposing the Greens is a faction
01:38 led by Queen Rhaenyra, Aegon's elder
01:40 half-sister, called the Blacks.
01:42 Rhaenyra may not reign from the throne,
01:44 but she has both the late
01:46 King Viserys's blessing and his crown.
01:48 "Thank thee."
01:50 "Thank thee."
01:52 "Thank thee."
01:54 "Thank thee."
01:56 Her biggest supporters
01:58 include her husband, Uncle Daemon,
02:00 as well as his daughters, Bela and Rhaena.
02:02 The girls' grandparents,
02:04 Lord Corlys Velaryon, a mighty admiral,
02:06 and Princess Rhaenys,
02:08 an experienced dragonrider,
02:10 are also major players.
02:12 "I should take Maelis and patrol the gullet myself."
02:14 Additionally, Rhaenyra's heir
02:16 and eldest son,
02:18 Jaeserys Velaryon, whose parentage
02:20 is contested.
02:22 Unfortunately, the Blacks enjoy less
02:24 support among the major houses.
02:26 However, while they have other advantages,
02:28 more on that later,
02:30 they're hoping to drum up support.
02:32 "We must remind these lords
02:34 of the oaths they swore.
02:36 And the cost of breaking them."
02:40 Number 8. Familiar Houses.
02:42 For as much as House of the Dragon
02:44 feels familiar to fans of
02:46 Game of Thrones, some of the major
02:48 families from the original series have
02:50 been notably absent thus far.
02:52 Easily the most notable of these is
02:54 House Stark. In recruiting allies
02:56 to their side, neither the Greens
02:58 nor the Blacks can ignore the Lord of
03:00 Winterfell. "I, Rickon Stark,
03:02 Lord of Winterfell."
03:04 Additionally, other major houses
03:06 like the Tyrells, the Arryns,
03:08 and the Tullys remain undeclared
03:10 for either side so far.
03:12 Plus, who knows what perpetual wildcards
03:14 like the Ironborn will do.
03:16 How many of them we'll see in
03:18 season 2 is still unknown,
03:20 but we look forward to seeing them and their
03:22 familiar locations again. "Go to it then."
03:24 Number 7.
03:26 Helene's Prophecies.
03:28 Helene is overshadowed by her brothers,
03:30 Aemond and Aegon, in season 1 of House of the
03:32 Dragon. However, given her
03:34 soft-spokenness and odd behavior,
03:36 that's understandable. But just
03:38 because she's odd doesn't mean Helene
03:40 isn't worth paying attention to.
03:42 Several of the seemingly random things
03:44 that Helene says are actually portents of
03:46 future events. "You will have
03:48 a dragon one day." "You'll have
03:50 to close an eye." During season 1,
03:52 she predicts Aemond losing an eye
03:54 and gaining a dragon, as well
03:56 as the faction's names of Green and Black.
03:58 "Spool of Green, spool of Black."
04:00 Helene's "beast beneath the
04:02 boards" may also refer to Rhaenys
04:04 erupting from beneath her brother-husband's
04:06 coronation. "Your father."
04:08 "My beast beneath the boards."
04:10 So while her family may pay her no mind,
04:12 the audience should definitely listen
04:14 to whatever Helene says in season 2.
04:16 "If one possesses a thing,
04:18 the other will take it away."
04:20 Number 6. Alicent's third
04:22 son. Helene is not the
04:24 only one of Alicent's children to be overlooked.
04:26 Now, we can all hear you saying,
04:28 "Alicent has a fourth child?
04:30 Did we miss something?" Yes, technically,
04:32 but so did the show. "The queen
04:34 commands you to leave the godswood at once."
04:36 Alicent's youngest son with King
04:38 Viserys is named Daeron Targaryen.
04:40 In the books, the boy is sent
04:42 to Oldtown to serve as cupbearer to Alicent's
04:44 uncle, Hobart, the Lord Hightower.
04:46 "Then it lies with you to
04:48 make him sit." Although Hobart is
04:50 now dead, Daeron presumably
04:52 still lives there. According to
04:54 George R.R. Martin, Daeron
04:56 is canon to the TV series.
04:58 While there's no word on if Daeron
05:00 will appear in season 2, it's good
05:02 to keep him in mind, particularly
05:04 if anything should happen to his brothers.
05:06 "Is our father truly dead?" "Yes.
05:08 And they're going to make you
05:10 king." Number 5.
05:12 A twin on both sides.
05:14 The coming war has divided more
05:16 families than just the Targaryens.
05:18 Arryk and Arryk Cargyll are
05:20 twins who both served on the Kingsguard
05:22 under King Viserys. However,
05:24 Arryk becomes disillusioned with the idea
05:26 of serving Aegon, as he is
05:28 disgusted by the hedonistic and cruel
05:30 would-be king. "Do you see now what he is?"
05:32 Instead, he frees Rhaenys
05:34 and takes the crown of Viserys to Rhaenyra,
05:36 joining her Queensguard.
05:38 "With me, princess, I can not
05:40 let this treachery stand." With each
05:42 twin on different sides, a
05:44 face-off between them seems inevitable.
05:46 Also, the fact that
05:48 both monarchs are served by identical
05:50 guards could lead to some dangerous
05:52 schemes. "I swear to
05:54 ward the queen." Number 4.
05:56 The Song of Ice and Fire.
05:58 In the series premiere of House of the
06:00 Dragon, King Viserys explains to Rhaenyra
06:02 that the first Targaryen king of Westeros,
06:04 Aegon the Conqueror, had a dream.
06:06 In that dream, he foresaw
06:08 that a great threat would come from the north.
06:10 "It is to begin with a terrible winter,
06:12 gusting out of the distant
06:14 north." While his dream
06:16 and the dagger it's inscribed on are relevant
06:18 in Game of Thrones, it's also been
06:20 important in House of the Dragon.
06:22 Rhaenyra and Viserys' discussion of the
06:24 Song of Ice and Fire partially acts as
06:26 the source of Alicent's decision to put
06:28 her son on the throne instead of Rhaenyra,
06:30 due to a misunderstanding in Viserys'
06:32 final moments. "It is true.
06:34 What he saw
06:36 in the north." Whether the song is
06:38 sung again during House of the Dragon or
06:40 its words are forgotten by the characters,
06:42 it's crucial that we remember its significance.
06:44 "The Song of Ice and Fire."
06:46 "What?" Number 3.
06:52 Wild and Unclaimed Dragons.
06:54 As we alluded to
06:56 previously, while the Blacks may not
06:58 have manpower in this war, they are
07:00 currently ahead in another way.
07:02 Dragon power. "Your cause
07:04 owns a power that has not been seen
07:06 in this world since the days of old
07:08 Valyria. Dragons."
07:10 As Daemon points out,
07:12 finding riders for the wild dragons
07:14 and the dragons whose riders are deceased
07:16 will be paramount to the Blacks' war effort.
07:18 "Daemon, none of our dragons have been to war."
07:20 "There are also unclaimed dragons."
07:22 While most of the noble characters with
07:24 Targaryen blood have dragons,
07:26 not all of them do. Even so,
07:28 that still leaves a few dragons in
07:30 need of riders. And since Targaryens
07:32 like other houses aren't always
07:34 known for their fidelity, well,
07:36 the Blacks know who to recruit.
07:38 Number 2. The Queen's Friendship.
07:52 Despite all the animosity and mutual
07:54 bad blood between them, Alicent
07:56 and Rhaenyra were friends as young women.
07:58 They were as close friends as could be
08:00 since their fathers worked so closely together.
08:02 "My own father does not know the
08:04 language of girls either."
08:06 Tragically, through misunderstandings,
08:08 lies, and Alicent becoming Rhaenyra's
08:10 stepmother, the two grow to hate
08:12 each other. "My father is no gossip."
08:14 "Well, certainly he's been misled. He could not have witnessed
08:16 such a thing." The two queens do attempt
08:18 to reconcile as adults, for the sake
08:20 of their children and for their past friendship.
08:22 Alicent even reminds Rhaenyra of
08:24 a childhood memory, hoping to avert
08:26 any war between them. However,
08:28 after the death of Lucerys,
08:30 we doubt that Rhaenyra is feeling as
08:32 forgiving now. Still, who
08:34 knows?

08:58 Number 1. There will be fire and
09:00 blood. The Targaryen house
09:02 words are fire and blood,
09:04 and there will certainly be a lot of both
09:06 going forward. Dragons are
09:08 essentially flying, intelligent siege weapons,
09:10 and they are the greatest power
09:12 in Westeros. "Where are you?"
09:14 [Music]
09:16 "Come out and face me,
09:18 Dreyar!" While there are
09:20 strategies that can be used against them,
09:22 if armies are caught unprepared,
09:24 they're toast. Additionally,
09:26 dragons will fight dragons
09:28 in the coming conflict. While we've
09:30 gotten a taste of aerial combat, we're
09:32 sure to see much more of it in the future.
09:34 [Music]
09:36 The war in
09:38 House of the Dragons is among the most pivotal
09:40 events in the history of Westeros,
09:42 and they don't call it the Dance of Dragons
09:44 for nothing. "Dragons!"
