NSW top-ranked students awarded First in Course

  • last year
It's going to be a nervous night for thousands of year 12 students in New South Wales with HSC results available from 6-am tomorrow morning. But some lucky ones have been given an early indication of how they went. Today those that topped subjects were celebrated for their efforts.

00:00 After 13 years of study, an unbelievable achievement.
00:07 I just freaked out, I screamed, I ran down the stairs and my mum, she thought something
00:10 horrible had happened.
00:12 These 128 students topped the state in at least one HSC subject.
00:18 It's a very, very proud day for lots of parents and teachers and particularly for these students
00:22 who are going to get their full results tomorrow and then take on the world.
00:28 Phen Nguyen Ho's parents migrated from Vietnam.
00:31 Today he was awarded first in the state in advanced English.
00:35 They're not that proficient at English and so growing up I think I had to kind of balance
00:39 learning both at the same time.
00:41 We're really, really happy with the achievement.
00:43 It's unbelievable when we receive the phone calls.
00:47 Others overcame distance to succeed.
00:50 I did my HSC on Norfolk Island.
00:52 It was challenging.
00:53 There was a lot of hurdles to overcome but obviously hard work and dedication pays off.
00:59 67,000 students will wake up tomorrow morning and be able to see their full HSC results.
01:05 But with university applications down, many have already decided on an alternative path
01:09 forward.
01:10 Many of these students I know behind me will want to go to university.
01:13 Some of them will go into vocational education and we need them to do that because we have
01:16 such labour shortages in critical areas.
01:20 I'm going to go and finish my Certificate 3 via TAFE.
01:24 But for the majority here, more study awaits.
01:27 Something maths related hopefully and something that's a bit stressful, a bit challenging
01:31 but very rewarding.
01:32 That's probably my end goal.
01:34 An exciting future, but first a break.
