COP28 Climate Summit Deal: Nations Pledge to Triple Renewable Energy Capacity by 2030

  • last year
Countries agreed to a deal at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai that calls for a transition away from fossil fuels after previous proposals lacked language on phasing out fossil fuels. The final agreement published by the UAE presidency calls for "transitioning away from fossil fuels in energy systems...so as to achieve net zero by 2050 in keeping with the science." It also urges accelerating efforts to phase down unabated coal power and triple renewable energy capacity globally by 2030. The deal does not mandate an absolute phase-out of hydrocarbons, instead calling for a "phase down."
