Pompey boss John Mousinho talks to The News after his side's 3-0 win at Shrewsbury
Transcript
00:00 2-0 to Shrewsbury, 4-0 to Winds now, what were your thoughts on that match?
00:06 3-0 wasn't it?
00:07 3-0, sorry, I've had a bad day!
00:09 My thoughts were that obviously the result, the most important thing, we've taken three points, that was brilliant.
00:18 I think probably next after that we need to take the clean sheet, which is great, we want to keep building on the clean sheets.
00:24 The performance was brilliant, I thought we were excellent, especially in the second half.
00:30 The first half was tough for us, we had to deal with breaking Shrewsbury down, they came and they were very well organised, they worked hard.
00:36 For the first 20-25 minutes I thought we just moved the ball a bit too slowly, we were a bit pedestrian in the way that we shifted it from side to side.
00:44 Then we clicked into gear I think about on the 25 minute mark and we started to create a few more opportunities,
00:49 open them up a little bit more and then the goal definitely came at a good time because then Shrewsbury had to change the way they pressed.
00:55 As soon as they did that I thought we started to pick them off really well.
00:57 The whole second half felt like we were well in control but also created a huge amount of chances as well.
01:02 So really pleased for the boys putting in that performance, especially after Monday night, quite a tricky one to bounce back from,
01:08 a few question marks in terms of making sure that we stepped on ourselves after such an emotional night where we put so much in.
01:17 To do that and to be as professional as we were in the second half was brilliant.
01:20 You did start quite slowly but that second half was back to yourselves and you looked like screwing goals every time you pulled forward.
01:26 That happens in games, we obviously want to start a bit quicker than that but you can't just come to places in blitz teams,
01:34 especially this Shrewsbury side, they're a good team, I think they've won four of their last five at home,
01:40 they've got a very good home record and they've put some teams to bed here that are doing well in the league.
01:45 They were going to be tough to break down and I didn't have a problem with that, I didn't have an issue with that,
01:52 I just thought we should have moved the ball a bit quicker, that was all.
01:55 But physically we looked good, I thought we looked really fit throughout the 90.
01:59 We just needed to probably deal with that first 15, 20, 25 minutes a bit better but it does happen,
02:04 you can't just go and blow sides away, you've got to make sure you stay in games, be patient,
02:08 don't give anything away at the back, which we did really well and we'll always get opportunities at the top end of the pitch.
02:14 Whether it's through a set piece or whether it's through a good bit of play, I think because we're in good form at the moment
02:19 and we've got to make sure we take advantage of those when we do and today we did.
02:22 What did you say to the players at half-time for that second half?
02:25 The goal didn't change the half-time team talk in terms of making sure we needed to move the ball a bit quicker,
02:31 the only thing that did change was the fact that I thought Shrewsbury were going to do something slightly different,
02:35 which I thought they did, so I thought the centre-forwards tried to press our centre-halves a bit higher
02:39 and that gave us a few more opportunities to move the ball quickly into the middle of the park and then out
02:44 and we managed to do that really well.
02:46 We found Marlon and Joe, didn't find them too much in the first half, but we found Marlon and Joe
02:50 and then we were a real threat from there.
02:52 We were just making sure we managed that and the whole point of it was to make sure we didn't slow the game down too much
03:00 and I think we got our rewards for that.
03:02 And you were in control all game, weren't you?
03:04 It felt like we were really in control. We controlled the first half.
03:07 What you have to make sure you do in these sort of games is when you are controlling them,
03:11 don't get done on the counter, don't get done by a set-piece.
03:13 I think Shrewsbury had a couple of shots where we lost second balls and Will made a couple of routine saves
03:20 but the message at half-time was those can go in, they can fly in the top corner or take a deflection and go in.
03:26 We saw last week Taylor Perry score at Wickham from long range, so we've got to make sure we just tighten up in a couple of areas.
03:32 Don't give yourself anything to do that you don't need to do.
03:35 I thought we came out in the second half completely controlled the game and did exactly what we'd asked them to do.
03:40 How difficult was it to make the Colby-Bishop-Kazini-Yanghi decision?
03:44 In a lot of ways it was very, very difficult because I think we've got three really, really good centre-forwards
03:51 and Christian has obviously been playing as a ten but Colby has shown time and time again over the last two or three seasons
03:58 that he's one of the best centre-forwards at this level.
04:00 He came back, he looked fit, he looked sharp, I thought he looked really sharp when he came on.
04:04 It just seemed like after Kazini's performance on Monday night that I thought it might suit him to go toe-to-toe with Aaron Pierre
04:13 and if space opened up then it would be perfect for him.
04:17 I completely understand from the outside, people say you're blessed with talent up top and I think that as well.
04:26 It was a tough call but both are there ready to play when they need to be and I think it's really, really nice to have that option.
04:35 Thank you.
04:36 Cheers, mate.
