Joe Bugner vs Greg Page in a ten round non-title heavyweight bout

Date: July 24, 1987

Venue: Sydney Entertainment Centre, Sydney

Bugner stance: orthodox

Page stance: orthodox

Joe Bugner's UK-based comeback ended when he lost a disputed split decision to Steffen Tangstad in 1984. Bugner moved to Australia, and in 1986 he launched his latest comeback, calling himself "Aussie Joe". His first bout Down Under was a points win over James Tillis, who had given Mike Tyson a tough fight. Next, was David Bey, who also lost on points.

Greg Page turned pro in 1979, and won his first 19 bout. His best wins in that streak were a second round knockout of Alfredo Evangelista, a fourth round stoppage of Scott LeDoux and a points win over Jimmy Young. Trevor Berbick beat him on points in his 20th bout. Page won his next four fights, with a points win over Renaldo Snipes the highlight. Page then lost on points to Tim Witherspoon and David Bey. Somehow, he was allowed to challenge for the WBA title, and knocked out Gerrie Coetzee in the eighth round. Page lost his title on points in his first defence to Tony Tubbs. This was followed by a points loss to Buster Douglas. Page then won three of his next four fights against fringe contenders.
