John Stracey turned pro in 1969. He lost his first attempt at become British champion when he was disqualified against Bobby Arthur in 1972. He won the title a year later in a rematch with Arthur, knocking him out in the fourth round. In 1974, he won the European title, stopping Roger Menetrey in the eighth round. AFter winning his next five bouts, Stracey travelled to Mexico, and stopped Jose Napoles in the sixth round to win the WBC belt. Stracey lost his title in his second defence when he was stopped in the 12th round by Carlos Palomino.

Dave "Boy" Green turned pro in 1974, and in his 16th bout he won the British light welterweight title, stopping Joey Singleton in trhe sixth round. Six wins later, Green won the vacant European light welterweight title, stopping Jean-Baptiste Piedvache in the ninth round. In his next fight, he beat Mario Omar Guillotti on points. He moved up to welterweight, and had a record of 23-0 with 18KOs.
