00:00 "Controversy creates cash," says WCW head honcho Eric Bischoff, "but from my experience
00:06 with the Year of Our Lord 2022, controversy is bloody exhausting.
00:11 At every turn this year, there has been something else coming up to keep the wrestling business
00:15 on its toes, and I think we can all agree that what the wrestling business needs is
00:20 a nice, peaceful 2023, just as we wanted 2022 to be the relaxing year of normalcy after
00:26 2021 and 2020, and man, 2019 was nuts too, oh god, we're just gonna keep getting more
00:32 and more ridiculousness every time we take a trip around the sun until the cosmic death
00:35 of the universe comes for us all, aren't we?
00:37 Well that seems like a very cheery way to kick off the most wonderful time of the year.
00:41 Nothing says holiday spirit quite like controversy.
00:43 I'm Tempest Hailing from PartsFunKnown, and these are the 10 most controversial wrestling
00:47 moments of 2022.
00:49 But before we get on with our list, make sure of course that you like this video, subscribe
00:52 and enable notifications to always on so you never miss a fun list just like it, and make
00:56 sure to watch Survival Series here on PartsFunKnown.
00:59 We may or may not have another episode coming soon, so you better get caught up.
01:02 Number 10, Brian Kendrick says dumb s***
01:05 All Elite Wrestling has had more than its fair share of controversial moments throughout
01:09 2022, most of which we'll get to, don't you worry, but one of the earliest moments
01:13 on this list was one AEW was actually able to get out in front of.
01:18 Following the Brian Kendrick's departure from WWE as a producer in February, he was
01:22 immediately announced for a match on AEW Dynamite with the recently returned Jon Moxley.
01:27 That match, however, never took place, as after it was announced, old clips of Kendrick
01:32 saying "really dumb s***" resurfaced.
01:35 Some of it was just dumb s*** of the regular variety.
01:38 The moon being a space station, the sun not being hot, the world being run by a race of
01:43 lizards, all harmless yet terribly frightening nonsense.
01:47 The dumb s*** like denying the existence of the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting and saying
01:51 the number of Jewish people killed during the Holocaust was exaggerated, however, considerably
01:56 more dumb.
01:57 These old quotes got the Kendrick match removed from Dynamite, and he hasn't wrestled since.
02:01 He was brought in by WWE to produce Ronda Rousey's match at Survivor Series upon her
02:05 request as Kendrick was her former trainer, but he was not rehired.
02:10 Number 9, Tyrus wins the NWA Championship
02:13 If controversy creates cash, Billy Corgan and the NWA certainly wanted to test that
02:17 theory in 2022.
02:19 The NWA is probably the deadest brand going in wrestling, and has been for most of the
02:23 last three decades.
02:25 While they did have a few strands of goodwill with the all-female Empower event, they have
02:29 since done everything in their NWA power to destroy that goodwill with asinine quotes
02:35 and decisions like this.
02:36 While other promotions continue to showcase many of the best young stars of the independent
02:40 scene, and many of the top promotions continue to put on the kind of match that brings in
02:43 the big gates and buy rates, the NWA has done neither.
02:47 Instead promoting Tyrus vs. Trevor Murdoch vs. Matt Cardona for their Hard Times pay-per-view
02:52 in November.
02:53 Worse still, in the tone-deaf booking decision of the year, the NWA decided notable prick
02:58 Tyrus was their top choice to represent the company.
03:01 Naturally, Corgan insisted it was not Tyrus' exposure on Fox News that got him the push,
03:06 but rather his wrestling ability.
03:08 Editor, insert the clip of Tyrus falling on his old, unathletic ass here, please.
03:13 Harley Race, Terry Funk, Dusty Rhodes, and Tyrus' untalented ass.
03:19 Number 8.
03:20 Jonathan Gresham Quits Ring of Honor
03:22 There are varying levels of controversy when looking at those who left AEW in 2022.
03:27 On one end, you have Cody Rhodes, who, while shocking, uncontroversially worked without
03:31 a contract and put over a young star on the way out before making his way to WWE.
03:36 On the other end, you have the madness in September that could have convinced Tony Khan
03:39 not to long-term book ever again, and then you have Jonathan Gresham right in the middle.
03:44 Gresham was the man who won the interim ROH World Championship at Final Battle 2021, before
03:49 signing on to AEW's version of Ring of Honor, unifying the titles with Bandito's Championship
03:54 at Supercard of Honor.
03:55 Unfortunately, we saw very little of Gresham in AEW.
03:58 A couple of title defenses against Dalton Castle and Lee Moriarty aside, he hadn't done
04:03 much and when asked to drop the title to Claudio Castagnoli in the opening match of Death Before
04:06 Dishonor, he promptly had a heated discussion with Tony Khan over how he had been treated
04:11 and quit the company.
04:12 He still did the job, losing to Castagnoli at the show, but has not been seen in ROH
04:17 or AEW since, only making sporadic appearances on The Independence, which is a shame because
04:21 a man as talented as Gresham deserves to be showcased on the biggest stage possible.
04:26 Number 7.
04:27 Sammy Guevara Keeps Getting In Fights
04:29 Sammy Guevara sure has caught the brunt of the heat from fans over his backstage scuffles
04:33 this year.
04:34 Last year, you had his altercation with Eddie Kingston, which put a stop to their planned
04:37 match at All Out, an altercation that got Kingston suspended as he pie-faced Sammy after
04:41 Sammy reportedly blew off Kingston's taking issue with one of Sammy's promos calling him
04:45 a fat piece of s***.
04:47 Eddie has since admitted to being at fault for this, but that doesn't mean Sammy hasn't
04:50 been hated on vociferously since then.
04:53 Then you get the two-for-one deal on Sammy Guevara fights as just a couple of months
04:56 later you had another backstage dust-up, this time between Sammy and Andrade Alidolo.
05:01 This came after Andrade made a number of comments about wanting out of AEW and was prepared
05:05 to fight Sammy at Dynamite.
05:07 Dynamite came, and somehow Andrade and Sammy were allowed to be within an arm's reach of
05:11 each other, evident by Andrade punching Sammy and getting himself suspended.
05:15 Again, that night saw Sammy on the receiving end of the heavy heat from the crowd, even
05:19 though the accounts of what happened said Sammy was not involved in the violence.
05:23 Number 6.
05:24 Shane McMahon Gets Fired
05:25 Ah yes, the most notable instance of a McMahon leaving WWE this year.
05:30 It had been since WrestleMania 37 that we had seen the tennis-shoe-wearing thumb-son
05:34 of Vince McMahon, but Shane finally made his return to WWE in the Royal Rumble match.
05:40 Finally is a word to be used loosely, because I don't think anyone was particularly awaiting
05:44 Shane's return with bated breath, least of all were those involved in the match.
05:48 Shane reportedly made such a kerfuffle trying to have the Royal Rumble be about himself
05:52 and not the 27 actual wrestlers and two celebrities involved in the match, and he angered a number
05:57 of those involved including Brock Lesnar, who is about as much fun to anger as a hornet's
06:01 nest.
06:02 Shane was so insistent on seeing through his ideas for the match that were described as
06:06 "devoid of logic" that Vince saw to it that he was removed from the company immediately
06:10 after saying Shane would never get another pop in WWE as long as he was there.
06:15 He's not anymore, but I don't think Shane is likely to be the next of Triple H's rehires.
06:19 Number 5.
06:20 Kota Ibushi's Accusations
06:22 Well here's a tricky one.
06:24 Kota Ibushi is best known to fans for being one of the most gifted performers in the world,
06:28 having won nearly every championship in New Japan Pro Wrestling including two straight
06:32 G1 Climaxes and also he was Kenny Omega's lover.
06:35 It has been a while since we've seen the golden star in the ring as he's yet to return from
06:38 a particularly nasty shoulder injury he suffered in his match with Kazuchika Okada in the final
06:43 of the G1 Climax in 2021.
06:45 However, his 2022 was notable for another reason as the typically quiet and reserved
06:50 Ibushi took to Twitter to call out New Japan management for sexual harassment and abuse
06:54 of power.
06:55 Things have been incredibly quiet on this front since the comments were made back in
06:58 the spring, but New Japan did make a public apology to Ibushi with company president Takami
07:02 Obari saying they've worked to have an open discussion with Ibushi.
07:06 Reports said Gato was working to smooth things over between the two sides, but oh what a
07:10 tricky situation this all is.
07:12 Ibushi did pose for a picture over a lovely meal with his ex in September, but otherwise
07:16 we have no idea when we might see Ibushi in the ring again.
07:19 Hopefully it's soon.
07:21 4.
07:22 Naomi and Sasha Banks Walk Out
07:24 Sasha Banks being passed over for Ronda Rousey resulting in Banks walking out of WWE for
07:28 the remainder of 2022 is the biggest unforced error of the wrestling year.
07:33 Sasha Banks and Naomi won the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship at WrestleMania, but
07:37 their reign did not last long at all.
07:39 The tag belts were about as prestigious as the QuizzleMania Tag Team Championship at
07:43 that point, with years of shoddy booking detracting heavily from the excitement that the belts
07:47 started with.
07:48 One might think putting the titles on two stars like Sasha and Naomi might change that
07:51 outlook, but one might be totally wrong.
07:54 Instead, the reported plan after WrestleMania was for Sasha Banks and Naomi to both lose
07:58 to SmackDown Women's Champion Ronda Rousey in separate singles matches.
08:02 Not content to have themselves and their title reign devalued when they were doing their
08:05 best to make the most out of it, they walked out of the May 16th episode of Raw, just in
08:10 time for the WWE commentators to call them unprofessional on-air.
08:13 There have been conflicting reports about the actual status of Sasha and Naomi since
08:17 then, with some saying they've been released, and others denying that being the case.
08:21 And now with those in power at WWE no longer being in power, every big show will in some
08:26 way feature predictions from fans saying this is finally when Sasha and Naomi will be back.
08:30 Royal Rumble 2023!
08:32 3.
08:33 MJF's Pipe Bomb
08:34 MJF's pipe bomb is an oversimplification.
08:37 MJF is this generation's Brian Pillman, outside of the actual Brian Pillman of this
08:41 generation, Brian Pillman.
08:44 But in MJF's case, he is the only one in on the work, and no one else really knows
08:48 for sure.
08:49 This all started with MJF's backstage blow-up with the leader of the TK crew, Tony Khan,
08:54 with MJF reportedly upset about not being given a raise despite his impeccable work.
08:59 This rift between the two sides built until MJF nearly no-showed his match with Wardlow
09:03 at AEW Double or Nothing, with a plane ticket being bought to take MJF home from Vegas.
09:08 MJF did the match, getting squashed by Wardlow, but then Wednesday came and AEW put a microphone
09:13 in MJF's hand.
09:14 He said a lot of stuff, including "f***".
09:17 He called Tony Khan a "f***ing mark" before the show cut to commercial.
09:20 It was a whole ordeal, and boy, ordeal is a word coming up a lot in this one, with MJF
09:25 only returning to AEW at All Out when everything in the company finally got smoothed out.
09:30 Oh, wait a minute.
09:32 2.
09:33 Brawl Out
09:34 I don't think anybody heard about this story.
09:35 We didn't do any coverage of it.
09:37 CM Punk's AEW return didn't seem like it could be going any better up to the point
09:41 he won the AEW World Championship at Double or Nothing, and then he broke his foot and
09:45 AEW went to hell.
09:46 He returned from his injury and immediately shot on Hangman Page in the ring, which set
09:50 off a bunch of alarms, and then All Out happened, and it seemed to go alright, with Punk winning
09:54 back the AEW World title from Jon Moxley, and then Brawl Out happened.
09:59 CM Punk dropped his gripe bomb, tearing apart The Elite, Hangman Page, and Colt Cabana in
10:03 one long prepared tirade.
10:06 The Elite didn't like this, and went to Punk's locker room where they all talked out their
10:09 differences like gentlemen and continued on their way.
10:12 Sorry that was from an alternate universe where Tempest is allowed to have what he wants.
10:15 Rather, in this s*** universe we know and are forced to exist in, CM Punk, Ace Steel,
10:20 and The Elite all had a good old-fashioned Donnie Brooke match in the locker room, a
10:23 brawl that saw AEW launch an investigation into the matter and suspend all of those who
10:27 were involved.
10:28 Which was very annoying, considering four of them had just won belts on that very same
10:32 show.
10:33 Good to get you all caught up on that little snippet of news I'm sure you all missed.
10:37 And number one, Vince McMahon.
10:39 "Vince McMahon is the most successful wrestling promoter in the history of the world.
10:43 He is also someone who was exposed for having allegedly made a series of hush money payments
10:47 to cover up multiple incidents of sexual misconduct.
10:50 Both of those statements are true, and I know which one I think is more important."
10:53 In April, The Wall Street Journal, a big boy news publication, revealed in an investigation
10:58 that McMahon had made a $3 million hush money settlement over an alleged affair with a former
11:03 employee.
11:04 McMahon stepped down as the CEO and Chairman of WWE, but kept his role overseeing creative,
11:09 so optically for fans, very little had changed.
11:12 That would not last, however, as that $3 million settlement only grew as they kept digging,
11:17 resulting in multiple settlements made relating to misconduct claims against McMahon and John
11:21 Laurinaitis, which by the end totaled $12 million being unearthed.
11:26 McMahon finally announced his retirement on July 22nd while we were at a party.
11:30 Look at our shocked faces.
11:31 More seriously, Vince McMahon leaving WWE is the biggest wrestling news story that didn't
11:36 involve a death, maybe ever.
11:38 We never thought it would happen, but boy it sure did.
11:41 F*** Vince McMahon, hold bad people accountable for the bad things they do.
11:45 Merry Christmas!
11:47 And that's our list.
11:48 Make sure of course that you like this video, subscribe, enable notification to always on,
