00:10 Welcome to another episode of the Long Life Action podcast,
00:15 where we take a look at all the latest goings on at Brighton, Hove Abbey,
00:18 and Crawley Town in Sporting Sussex.
00:20 I'm Matt Powell, and this week I'm joined by Brighton, Hove Abbey, and
00:23 writers Sam Morton and Richie Mills, and Crawley Town expert Mark Dunford.
00:27 Brighton came from behind to take a share of the spoils of Old Foes,
00:29 Crystal Palace in the final game before Christmas.
00:32 Danny Wobbeck's late looping header rested the point for
00:35 the Seagulls after Jordan Ivey had opened the scoring for
00:37 Palace in the stroke of half time.
00:39 We'll pick over the bonus of the game at Southhurst Park and
00:41 take a look at all the latest goings on at Crawley Town.
00:44 You can read all the stories we are talking about with videos and
00:46 pictures online at sussexworld.co.uk/sport.
00:49 And you can check out other great videos on shotstv.com and

00:54 You may also be watching this on latest TV, so thank you very much for
00:57 tuning in.
00:58 The 1-1 draw at Palace moved Albion up to 8th in the Premier League,
01:02 five points behind fifth place Spurs, who would play on the December 28th.
01:06 It will be at Albion to play the game more.
01:07 Sum that game up for us, Sam.
01:09 This game looks like it's eternally meant to be 1-1.
01:12 Yes, five consecutive 1-1 draws between the two sides.
01:17 I think it's the joint longest period of consecutive results in a game.
01:22 And it was probably fair reflection.
01:26 I think it was a game of two halves.
01:28 I think Crystal Palace definitely edged the first half.
01:31 They had the better chances and definitely put more pressure on the Brighton
01:35 defenders and the keeper, Verbruggen.
01:38 And you felt that a goalish draw would have been decent for Brighton to come
01:42 away from that and then reset and then come back in the second half.
01:45 But it was a mistake at the end of the first half with Verbruggen under pressure.
01:51 Pascoe-Berry's pass did put him under a little bit of pressure, but he had to
01:55 deal with it, really.
01:55 He had to kick the ball out a lot quicker.
01:57 He ended up kicking it straight to Alisse, who headed it to Will Hughes, got the
02:02 ball back and then crossed it in brilliantly to Jordan Ayo at the back post.
02:05 And it was probably a deserved lead for Palace on the balance of that first half.
02:12 And De Serbi clearly wasn't happy with his side's performance because he made two
02:15 changes at halftime, Danny Wobbeck and Ficundo Buendote coming on.
02:20 And it was Carlos Boliva and Simon Dingra that came off.
02:25 And it did make a huge difference, those two subs, really.
02:27 And Brighton were much improved in the second half.
02:30 And you felt a goal was coming, really.
02:32 They had lots of kind of half chances, no massive, massive chance.
02:36 I think Jack Hinchwood probably will look back at frustration with a couple of
02:41 misses, you would say.
02:42 One where he was played in by Danny Wobbeck back here when he kind of kicked the turf.
02:46 And it looked like he'd been fouled, but quite clearly he hadn't.
02:49 He just kicked the ground.
02:50 And that was probably their best chance.
02:52 And Hinchwood had another one that had the back post and Pascal Gross' cross.
02:55 But eventually, the pressure told and Wobbeck, back from injury, scored a
03:00 fantastic header from another Pascal Gross' cross.
03:03 It was another assist for him.
03:04 And it just showed Brighton what they'd been missing, really, with the experience
03:08 of Wobbeck to get that goal that was elusive for them.
03:13 And it just provides a little bit of a different option going forward.
03:15 And I'd definitely say it was a point gained in the circumstances because it was
03:20 so late on, but I think there was an element of frustration that if it had played like
03:24 they did in the second half of the first half, they probably would have won.
03:27 So there is an element of frustration there.
03:30 Who would have been happier with that result, Richie, Palace or Brighton?
03:36 I think at the full-time whistle, going by the reaction of some of the players,
03:41 Brighton, I saw Van Geck was sort of flat out on the floor looking pretty gutted.
03:48 But yeah, as Sam correctly pointed out, that Brighton just didn't play for most of the game.
03:56 They just weren't. In the first half, they were really pretty poor.
04:01 The likes of Carlos Belayber struggled.
04:05 I thought Tyreek Mitchell, the left-back, had a fairly good game against Saira Ndinga.
04:11 It just wasn't clicking. And Palace grew into the game as the first half wore on.
04:16 And then Brighton, yeah, I think they didn't really start properly playing well until
04:23 at least five to ten minutes into the second half.
04:25 Danny Waelbeck and Fekunda Bolonato, for me, were Brighton's best players,
04:28 and they were obviously second-half substitutes.
04:32 So, yeah, it's kind of like what might have been, but then also the way things were going,
04:38 it could have been zero points.
04:39 So I think, actually, I think after the game, Hodgson said he was fairly happy with the point,
04:48 whereas I think Brighton felt deserved.
04:50 He said it was sort of two points dropped, and he said that a number of times against,
04:55 I think, the likes of Fulham, Sheffield United and Burnley.
04:58 So I guess, yeah, grand picture, well, bigger picture, a point's fine.
05:05 But obviously, this was another game where I think Brighton left it out there a little bit.
05:12 That's a marvellous little segue there from Richie Tham.
05:14 Deserby said after the game it was two points lost.
05:16 Do you agree with him?
05:18 Yeah, I think you'd probably agree.
05:20 I think Palace are clearly a tough side to beat, but Brighton, you would argue,
05:26 have the more quality players around the pit.
05:30 And Brighton definitely probably would have gone into the game as favourites.
05:34 So it's just the element of frustration, because you can really see in the second half how
05:38 dominant Brighton can be.
05:40 And Palace didn't really have those two big problems.
05:42 There was one moment in the second half where Mateta did a dummy that completely sold Lewis
05:48 Duncan.
05:48 And it came up with a chance for Eze at the back post.
05:51 It was Van Heckert that made a superb last-ditch tackle.
05:54 And I think other than that, it would probably have been a goal.
05:57 So that was the most frightening Palace looked in the second half.
06:00 But apart from that, Brighton really did have all of the ball and all of the chances.
06:03 And so there will be an element of frustration.
06:06 They didn't perform like that in the first half.
06:07 And they dealt pretty well with Alisse.
06:11 I think Igor had a decent game at left-back against Alisse.
06:15 Kept him mostly quiet.
06:17 But you can't afford to make mistakes like they did for the goal.
06:20 And that will be another element of frustration, because that's how they conceded so many goals
06:24 this season, just from an individual mistake.
06:27 And they're still yet to keep a clean sheet in the Premier League.
06:30 So the longer that goes on, the more frustrating it gets, I think.
06:35 And just the more difficult it gets as well, because they're constantly probably in the
06:40 back of the mind the whole time.
06:41 They still need to get a clean sheet.
06:43 So I'd probably agree with De Serville that it was two points dropped.
06:48 But on the performance, I don't think it deserved more than a point.
06:52 I think on the reflection of the performance, I think a point was probably fair.
06:57 You mentioned the mistake.
06:58 An error at Aken costs Brighton as it done so often this season.
07:01 Akan's goal came from a mistake when goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen gifted Michael Alisse possession
07:06 and the forwards long-crossed down Jordan Ayoub, finished at the back post.
07:09 How frustrating must this now be getting for Albion fans, Richie?
07:13 Or is this what is to be expected with De Serville's risk-and-reward style of play?
07:18 Yeah, it's a good question.
07:20 I remember after the Arsenal game, Ian Wright and Alan Shearer basically said,
07:26 "Brighton's passing out from the back tactics played into Arsenal's hands."
07:32 And Shearer sort of posed the point of, you know, every now and again,
07:36 "Why don't you just go long?"
07:38 You know, just having a bit of heads-up play, looking about.
07:40 But interestingly, I think De Serville basically said it was more about,
07:48 "It's not the responsibility of Verbruggen because when the keeper is under pressure,
07:52 he needs his teammates to play," you know, suggesting that there wasn't options for him to play to.
07:57 I guess, you know, under De Serville, there's been unprecedented success with this approach.
08:05 So obviously, there's been, you know, so many positives, but there are foibles to this tactic.
08:11 So I think what is frustrating is that I do think Brighton, on the whole, sort of
08:20 defended quite well this season.
08:22 Like, Van Gecke has really, really come on leaps and bounds.
08:26 Dunk, I mean, there was a compilation of his heroics against Arsenal in that losing 2-0
08:31 defeat, but he was fantastic.
08:34 And I think Julio has also come on, but there's just moments where they just have
08:38 lapses in concentration that let them down.
08:41 I think if they sort of, and it's easier said than done, if they cut those out,
08:44 then I think they would have had quite a lot of clean sheets.
08:47 But it's just, it's such, you know, it's a sport of such, sorry, cliche city, but it's
08:53 such a sport of fine margins.
08:55 And, you know, when these things don't quite go your way, it can hurt you.
08:58 But yes, hopefully they will get that clean sheet at some point.
09:03 But also, I think sometimes if you keep rotating the squad, which is obviously out of necessity
09:09 because of Brighton's injuries, that does make it difficult sometimes to get that cohesion
09:14 together.
09:14 And sometimes if you're playing with unfamiliar players, then you're maybe not in tune with
09:19 each other and mistakes can happen.
09:20 But there you go.
09:22 Well, you mentioned the clean sheets.
09:25 They've now, I think it's got a club record 22 successive league games without keeping
09:30 a clean sheet.
09:30 And that's on top of Brighton winning just two of their past 12 league matches.
09:35 Those seem like quite grim stats on paper, Sam.
09:39 Would you agree with that?
09:40 And what do you think of the situation Brighton are in at the moment?
09:44 Yeah, I was just going to make the same point that Richie made there, really.
09:46 I think an argument for why that's happening is the number of changes.
09:50 I think De Servi's made record numbers of changes to his team each game this season.
09:54 Sometimes you don't have to.
09:57 I think we've made the point before about the goalkeeper situation.
09:59 And I think we've made clear that that could potentially be something he could kind of
10:06 change or just decide on a keeper and play with him more often.
10:10 But I think in terms of the injuries, they've had another one last night with Karim Moutoma
10:15 hobbling off at the end of the game just after Kluivert had scored and he was pictured in
10:22 a protective boot and crutches.
10:24 So that's a concerning one.
10:25 Pictured by you, Sam Morton, I should point out.
10:29 Pictured by you.
10:29 Yeah, yeah.
10:31 We've got a picture of him in the mix zone as he was leaving.
10:34 And yeah, just another one.
10:37 Veltman went off against Arsenal.
10:38 So it's just the two latest injuries really in a long list.
10:42 And as Richie said, that doesn't help with the cohesion of the team.
10:45 And Brighton are known for their brilliant styles of play, their passing moves.
10:51 And that's what was so great last season.
10:53 And the fact they had a week to prepare for those games as well.
10:55 Whereas this season, it's been lots of games to contend with each week and probably difficult
11:01 to train and plan, especially with all the injuries they've got.
11:03 So I think as the season goes on, I mean, they've got a week to prepare for the Spurs
11:07 game.
11:08 So hopefully you might see more of the intricate style of plays they've been able to practice
11:12 on it during the week and can make sure that they can cut out those sloppy errors which
11:16 are resulting in the goals.
11:17 Because as Richie said, defensively, for most of the game, they look brilliant.
11:21 So just hopefully they can cut those errors out.
11:23 I might have been sounding like a misery on reflection on this Palace game, but there
11:26 are positives that you can take from this picture.
11:28 They've now won 13 points from losing positions in the Premier League this season.
11:32 Only Liverpool have recovered more.
11:34 How much of that never say die spirit has been instilled by them, by Roberto Di Serbi,
11:38 Richie?
11:39 Yeah, I think Di Serbi earlier in the season talked about Brighton needing to have a better
11:46 mentality.
11:47 And then he said it was sort of the best he'd seen when they beat Forest with 10 men at
11:55 the city ground.
11:56 So I think the experience in Europe, the turnaround that they had from losing to AEK Athens and
12:03 then being 2-0 down at Marseille to then topping the group is a fantastic turnaround.
12:07 And also it is pretty, the backdrop is pretty remarkable because I saw a stat that said
12:13 Brighton the first club to have had 100 plus Premier League experience made in a calendar
12:20 year by teenagers.
12:21 So the point is that Brighton are doing pretty well with the car that they've been dealt.
12:32 So I think, but what was also quite interesting was that at the end of the game, Di Serbi
12:39 basically did perhaps send a sort of transfer hint that he needs a bit more in January.
12:47 He talked about Balebe not quite being ready as a Premier League player, having to play
12:56 with lots of players.
12:57 I was quoting Balebe, he says, "We have to accept the policy of the club is to play with
13:00 many young players and you have to give them time to progress and to make mistakes.
13:03 We have great potential players, but they are not great players yet.
13:06 Balebe is perhaps not ready to play in the Premier League yet, but he will be a great
13:11 Premier League player.
13:12 The policy of the club and the secret of a club is to divert those players who are not
13:15 there yet.
13:16 That is my job."
13:16 So, and just going back to, as we've previously said, arguably haven't replaced Kayserde
13:24 McAllister.
13:25 I think a bit more strength in depth so he doesn't have to rely on teenagers every week.
13:30 Might help.
13:31 But going back to your point, for them to be in the knockout stages of Europe, obviously
13:37 the FA Cup will start next month and still being in the shout with Europe, I still think
13:41 it's a pretty darn good effort.
13:43 Brilliant.
13:44 Well, thank you very much for your time, chaps.
13:46 We're going to take a quick break and when we do come back, we'll talk all things Crawley
13:48 Town.
13:49 10 men, Crawley Town fell to a 3-1 home defeat to promotion chasing Mansfield on Saturday.
13:55 Danilo Orsi was on the score sheet for the Reds in the first half, but the hosts were
13:58 reduced to 10 men in the second half when defender Jay Williams picked up two yellow
14:02 cards for fouling and then showing dissent.
14:04 Sum that result and performance up for us, please, Mark.
14:07 There's no shame in losing to Mansfield, I think.
14:10 No, not at all.
14:12 I mean, Scott Lindsay said to me earlier in the season that he thinks Mansfield are probably
14:16 the best team in League Two and they're certainly the most experienced.
14:21 When I saw a table of league appearances in one of the game days and I think Mansfield,
14:30 all the players between them had about 2,700 league EFL appearances between them.
14:35 Crawley had 700 or something.
14:37 So it's a stark difference in experience in the league.
14:40 But it was another one of those games where Crawley dominated for long periods.
14:44 When it was one-all, Will Wright hit the crossbar.
14:47 If that had gone in a 2-1, probably ends up with Crawley sort of seeing the game out maybe.
14:53 But Will Wright said after the game that when they went 2-1 down with a bit of a sucker
15:00 punch, they just went all gung-ho and that they needed to just settle and then sort of
15:05 play the way they were playing.
15:06 But they sort of, the players on the pitch changed the way they play and tried to attack
15:10 too much.
15:11 And that's when they let the third goal in and against a team like Mansfield, you're
15:15 not coming back from that.
15:17 But yeah, it's sort of a little bit too many times now that, and it's getting frustrating,
15:22 and Will Wright referenced this in his post-match, that they are, there's too many games they're
15:27 playing well in and dominating and not getting anything from and mostly away from home.
15:32 Home form is really good.
15:33 But yeah, that needs to change quite quickly.
15:37 And he said he would take, Will Wright said he'd take a scrappy win rather than playing
15:43 well, play badly and get the three points rather than playing well.
15:46 I don't think Scott Lindsay fully agrees with that.
15:49 But yeah, it's, yeah, it needs to change.
15:53 Just that dominating, they just need to take advantage.
15:57 And that's why I think they do need to get another sort of poacher, a goal scorer in
16:02 the transfer window.
16:02 But we know that's not easy finding.
16:05 If there's a good goal scorer around, somebody's already going to have him, aren't they?
16:08 You're not going to just pick him up in January.
16:10 So, and that's a little gem.
16:12 So yeah, yeah, disappointing.
16:14 But they, yeah, no disgrace.
16:17 We're going into the game with Manchester City.
16:18 Scott Lindsay believed Crawley had come a hell of a long way since he took over as Bros
16:22 11 months ago and said turning their fortunes around is giving him more enjoyment than he
16:26 had while at former club Swindon Town.
16:28 As a Crawley Town supporter, Mark, how pleased would you be to hear this statement?
16:32 And do you agree with Lindsay's comments?
16:34 Oh yeah, absolutely.
16:35 100% I agree with him.
16:37 He's, he has turned Crawley around.
16:40 He really has.
16:41 We'll come a bit more into that in a minute.
16:43 But I remember when he started at Crawley, he said to us in his first press conference
16:48 that he, yeah, he didn't really enjoy Swindon.
16:52 They were fifth when he was in charge.
16:56 When he left Swindon, they were fifth in the table.
16:59 And yeah, and he said there was one game where they won three or four games on the trot.
17:04 And then they drew nil-nil with somebody at home, not quite a high placed team.
17:10 And he got booed off the pitch.
17:11 And he just said, what's that all about kind of thing.
17:13 And he was welcomed with open arms by the Crawley fans and they absolutely love him.
17:19 And he loves them now.
17:19 And yeah, he's clearly enjoying it as well.
17:23 And yeah, I think he could do great things at this club if he's given the time and the
17:28 support by the owners.
17:29 So yeah, no, really looking forward to what happens in 2024 with Crawley, if Lindsay's
17:34 still at the helm, when Lindsay's still at the helm, sorry, I don't know.
17:36 Don't read anything into that, if anyone.
17:38 Please don't read anything into that if I know nothing.
17:41 Oh, how would you sum up the last 12 months at Crawley, Mark?
17:45 Would you, there was obviously, I think there's been tangible progress on the field to compare
17:49 to 2022.
17:50 And unfortunately, I can't see you winning many awards for the last 12 months.
17:54 It's gone.
17:54 No, no.
17:56 Yeah, it's been, I mean, from when Lindsay took over in end of January, going into February
18:02 last year, I mean, Crawley, they were going down and they were on the run where I think
18:07 it was eight games without a win, even under Lindsay.
18:10 And which ended with the three nil defeat at Sutton United, which was, I think, possibly
18:16 the worst performance I've ever seen from a Crawley side.
18:18 And it just all looked doom and gloom.
18:22 Everybody thought they were going down.
18:23 And he turned it around that when Crawley are doing an advent calendar every day on
18:29 Twitter and their day 19 was Don Telford's two goals at Hartlepool, which effectively
18:35 kept them up.
18:37 And all the fans were saying, oh, this was the moment last year, amazing kind of thing.
18:41 And then over the summer, they've had the clear out.
18:44 Lindsay's got the squad he wants, they're playing the football he wants.
18:47 And yeah, it's such a stark difference from when he took over to now the culture of the
18:52 club.
18:52 There seems to be just a huge team spirit, not saying that there wasn't before, but you
18:58 hear stories now of what it was like at the training ground, different factions in the
19:04 within the team and that and sort of a few egos, as it were.
19:07 But now that doesn't seem to be that all.
19:10 Ben Gladwin as captain is making a huge difference.
19:13 He's definitely a manager in the making.
19:15 He's having meetings with his players without Lindsay involved kind of thing, just talking
19:19 about mentality, et cetera.
19:21 And yeah, it's a huge difference.
19:24 And if Crawley, I've said I said it before, I said earlier in the season, Crawley's biggest
19:29 worry is not as if they lose Danilo Orsi, if they lose Liam Kelly, if they lose Scott
19:35 Lindsay, that will be Crawley's biggest problem.
19:38 And there are going to be players that are going to be clubs that are going to be interested
19:42 in Lindsay.
19:43 It's probably in the January transfer window because there are teams, big teams that are
19:47 struggling in League One and League Two that will want to change.
19:51 And they're big clubs, big like Crawley.
19:54 And I hate saying that, but it's true.
19:57 But I mean, everybody thought they were going to go down this season.
20:00 Everybody predicted them not to win any games and that Scott Lindsay should win manager
20:04 of the year, whatever happens this year from all the expectation.
20:08 Yeah, you can have Stockport and you're not counting with your million, your Rexons.
20:12 Your Rexons.
20:14 Yeah, your Rexons.
20:15 Scott Lindsay's just done an incredible job.
20:17 And yeah, the owners need to back him and keep him.
20:20 Well, Lindsay has a chance to continue his incredible job over the Christmas and New
20:25 Year period, starting at home to AFC.
20:26 Wimbledon on the 22nd of December, and this is followed by trips to Gillingham and MK
20:30 Don's on Boxing Day and the 29th of December, respectively.
20:33 How do you see these games going, Mark?
20:35 They're not particularly kind set of fixtures, I don't think.
20:38 No, well, they're all three of those.
20:41 Oh, no, sorry, not three of those teams.
20:43 Sorry, because they've got Swindon on New Year's Day.
20:46 So Swindon, MK Don's, Gillingham are currently 12th, 11th and 10th in the League Two table,
20:51 all the three places above Crawley Town.
20:53 And obviously, AFC Wimbledon tonight, they're seventh.
20:56 So yeah, not kind fixtures.
20:59 AFC Wimbledon obviously beat Portsmouth in the EFL trophy or whatever it's called
21:04 on 5-2 the other night.
21:08 So they're going to be a threat tonight.
21:09 Yeah, not easy.
21:12 Gillingham, they'll want to do one over Crawley, over Lindsay after all that Gillingham debacle
21:19 that sort of rubs Stephen Clemens' takeover.
21:22 And then MK Don's, Crawley absolutely battered them at Broadfield Stadium and beat them 3-1.
21:27 Could have been a lot more that night.
21:28 And I remember speaking to Toby Locke, who's the MK, covers the MK Don's for one of our
21:32 sister titles, and he was really impressed with Crawley and the way they were playing.
21:37 So they will go there.
21:38 I mean, the away form hasn't been great, but the last one they did, they beat Colchester.
21:42 So it's going to be interesting.
21:44 But I did ask, Scott Lindsay wouldn't comment on the Gillingham game when I spoke,
21:48 when I asked him some questions on Tuesday.
21:50 He was only focused on the Wimbledon game.
21:52 But I said, one thing he did answer, I said, because in the reverse fixture,
21:57 they absolutely battered Gillingham and lost 1-0.
21:59 And I said, would you take a scrappy 1-0 win?
22:03 And he said, absolutely not.
22:04 I want to go there and dominate them and win.
22:07 And so I love that.
22:09 I just love his attitude.
22:10 That he doesn't just want to win.
22:11 He wants to perform well and win.
22:13 But yeah, I do agree with Will Wright a little bit that they should just, yeah, try and get
22:18 a few sort of scrappy wins under their belt.
22:20 And it might give them that confidence when they do perform well to go on and score more goals.
22:24 Well, we shall wait and see.
22:26 And we're going to have a very, very, very quick stroll down Steve Perdich's corner.
22:30 Brighton, a take on Tottenham on the 28th of December.
22:36 Sam Morton, how do you see that one going?
22:38 Really tough game.
22:41 Spurs have obviously had a few injuries, but they're starting to pick up a little bit more
22:45 form.
22:45 I think Richarlison's been scoring a few goals lately.
22:47 I'll go for another draw.
22:51 I think I'll go for another draw.
22:52 I'll say two all.
22:52 How do you see it going, Richie?
22:55 Yeah, I think even though Matoma has struggled for form of late, and obviously he's now injured,
23:02 so it might not be the worst that he gets a bit of time off.
23:06 But generally, I just think Brighton aren't quite clicking.
23:10 Obviously, he's still got quite a few players out.
23:13 So I think a one-all draw.
23:15 Apparently, Perves' Stupinen could be back in the matchday squad, which is great because
23:21 I think that does help Matoma.
23:23 When you've got him bombing on as a left back, that sort of provides the defence with a bit
23:29 more uncertainty because he can either attack you or there's someone to help him.
23:35 So he doesn't have that.
23:36 So yeah, I think at best a one-all draw.
23:40 Mark, we'll quickly move on to Crawley Town.
23:43 They said AFC Wimbledon on the 22nd, Gillingham on Boxing Day, and then MK Dons on the 29th.
23:50 Very quickly, how many points are Crawley getting out of that?
23:52 I think they're going to get seven points out of it.
23:56 I'm very confident.
23:57 They're going to win tonight, draw at Gillingham, win at MK Dons.
24:00 Excellent.
