Czech sidecar pilot Ilja Zachoval, aged 57, and his daughter Maruška Zachovalová, 27, who was riding in as passenger lost their lives during the 17th Česká Tourist Trophy classic sidecar race held on the tough 5.150-kilometer road course in the small town of Hořice v Podkrkonoší, in Hradec Králové Region, Czech Republic.
The accident occurred at about 12h15 on Sunday, 22 June 2008, on fourth of the six-lap race. Ilja Zachoval lost control of his machine in a corner where the speed was only 70 km/h fast, the sidecar went off the road and crashed into a tree. Despite all the trees were protected with straw bales, the impact was so hard that both pilot and passenger were killed at the scene.
After the accident the event was stopped and all further races were cancelled. More than 340 riders from central Europe, UK and New Zealand arrived to Hořice for the 17th edition of the Česká Tourist Trophy. 14 vintage motorcycles categories solo and two categories sidecars were scheduled from 21/22 June 2008.
