Amidst ongoing tensions in Manipur for nearly eight months, the Kuki community plans to seal off Churachandpur and Kangpokpi districts, opposing the government's security measures. Citing security threats, this move could hinder movement until January 5, escalating previous conflicts over tribal status and police bias. The standoff raises concerns for disruptions ahead of Christmas.

00:00 Almost 8 months have passed since the tensions in Manipur reached a fever pitch. While some
00:09 seek a return to normalcy for the Khoki community, elusive peace remains out of debate amidst
00:15 ongoing unrest. Reportedly, representatives of the Khoki community in Manipur have decided
00:21 to seal off crucial districts Chura Chandpur and Kankokpi despite the state government's
00:26 plan to enhance security and reopen the key highways. Their move comes amid concerns over
00:32 potential disruptions during the Christmas season. The Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum
00:37 (ITLF) has cited security threats and intelligence inputs as reasons for sealing the borders
00:42 within these districts. This decision affects the movement of all non-tribals both inside
00:47 and outside the district boundaries from 23 December to 5 January. This action is rooted
00:53 in ongoing tensions stemming from past violence between the Khoki and Methi communities over
00:58 issues related to Scheduled Tribes status. The Khoki tribes allege bias on the part of
01:04 the Manipur police and have resisted deployment of police personnel in their settled areas.
01:09 It's almost as if they're closing their districts now.
01:13 The ITLF's decision to block the government's effort to open highways and reinforce security
01:17 has raised concerns just before the Christmas celebrations. Earlier, festivals in Manipur
01:21 were muted due to similar tensions impacting traditional celebrations like Ningol Chakoba
01:26 observed by the Methi community. Despite the government's directive to ensure safe travel
01:31 on the highways connecting Imphal to Mau and Chura Chandpur, the ITLF move is set to challenge
01:36 these orders. The state authorities as of now have not responded to the threat posed
01:41 by the ITLF's decision. However, a senior police official has emphasised that no group
01:45 has the legal authority to restrict people's movement without the legal backing. This stand
01:51 off between the Khoki group and the state government is going to intensify existing
01:55 tensions in Manipur, hinting at a potential disruption during the festive season.
