00:00 A shocking end to Christmas for hundreds of campers here in Kayama.
00:06 There was more than 70 mils of rain, a deluge that lashed this caravan park and camping
00:11 site here.
00:13 There was a runway here where you can see behind me a boat was just swept 100 metres
00:18 from where it was parked on its trailer and made its way across through two embankments
00:23 and down here where it's been now wedged.
00:25 Quite a sight for all of the campers here this morning.
00:27 We talked to many of the campers and they've showed us videos and photos of last night's
00:32 rain event here in Kayama which was just dramatic to say the least.
00:36 A very frightening time.
00:38 Young kids told us they were terrified.
00:40 While there's a little bit of rain falling at the moment today, there's still a little
00:43 bit of a clean up underway here in the caravan park at Kayama.
00:47 So how much damage did last night's storm cause to the site?
00:53 Many families tell us that Christmas wasn't ruined.
00:55 Too many presents were destroyed while many others say that their annexes, their camping
01:00 sites, their fridges are trashed, having to be thrown out, cleaned, muddy, debris sort
01:07 of scattered across the site.
01:10 No one was harmed or hurt.
01:12 The community spirit here today is pretty high.
01:15 Everyone's getting around each other, sort of remarking about what last night was, what
01:20 they saw, how they felt.
01:21 Very frightening.
01:22 However, the damage is not too bad.
01:25 A fair bit of clean up to do and of course plans are underway to remediate this boat.
01:30 The owners tell us that they weren't here when they lost the boat and they are very
01:34 sad to see it sitting there.
01:36 So a campus bracing for more rain to come, Romi?
01:42 Look many are here for the foreseeable future.
01:44 Many have left.
01:45 Many left at one o'clock this morning.
01:47 They had to evacuate and when the flash flooding came up so quickly, their sites were, you
01:52 know, they had to leave.
01:53 SES were here getting them out.
01:56 So many did come back this morning.
01:58 Some are staying and hoping for drier weather.
02:00 It's a little bit of pitter patter at the moment.
02:02 The SES though and the Bureau are warning of, you know, these storms to stay around
02:07 for the next couple of days.
02:08 The message remains from emergency services, always be prepared for the worst.
02:13 It's storm season in New South Wales and don't we know it here in the South Coast at the
02:17 moment.
