00:00 We're all gonna stretch this back and back.
00:02 Your trunks are a little high, so this is gonna be a fair blow.
00:05 Right? I say stop, I want you to stop.
00:07 I say break, take a step back.
00:09 Question? Question? Good luck, guys.
00:11 Main event of the evening, 10 rounds in a super welterweight matchup.
00:19 Highly anticipated, 12-0 against 13-0-1.
00:25 [crowd cheering]
00:30 Here we go!
00:31 It's time to fight.
00:33 Raul Garcia in the white and gray trunks.
00:37 Leonardo Ruiz in the white with the red.
00:41 Robert Garcia in the corner of Ruiz.
00:45 Bob Santos in the corner of the Dominican.
00:49 Garcia.
00:52 Both these guys look ripped and ready at yesterday's weigh-in.
00:55 Big super welterweights tonight.
00:58 Six foot and six foot one.
01:00 Three inch reach advantage for Leonardo Ruiz.
01:06 Yeah, I met Ruiz for the first time face to face just this afternoon.
01:11 He's big.
01:12 And you can see that in the ring.
01:14 He's an imposing stature.
01:16 Height, wide shoulders, long arms.
01:19 And he's using that jab.
01:22 Using that reach advantage that he's got so far.
01:24 Nice power jab, too, stepping right down the middle.
01:26 Eight wins by knockout for Ruiz.
01:33 11 of 13 for Raul Garcia.
01:36 See, look, Garcia can be real sneaky.
01:39 He gives you one look most of the time, from what I notice on videos,
01:42 but he can be real sneaky.
01:43 He can surprise you with those punches and counter shots.
01:47 He can be a little bit awkward at times.
01:49 Yeah, he sets up nice traps at times on the outside.
01:52 He got his head over his front foot, but he's not really there.
01:56 He has a nice fade on his stance where he can pull out and hit you in counters.
02:01 Yeah, you're right, Champ.
02:02 He puts that weight on the front foot, but he actually uses it to rock back a lot.
02:05 Yep, that's what I call fade. Fades in and out.
02:07 Third fight of this calendar year for both of the men competing in our main event tonight.
02:16 Battle of the jabs so far in the first round, guys.
02:19 These guys both know they got ten rounds of work to do.
02:23 Scheduled for.
02:26 24-year-old against 24-year-olds.
02:30 The dome from the Dominican Republic, Raul Garcia.
02:41 Ruiz fighting very disciplined right now, but from what I see in the tape,
02:46 he's just waiting to get close enough to start ripping hooks with both hands
02:49 because he does that quite well.
02:51 Another criticism for not cutting off the ring here as well from Ruiz
02:55 is he had been pressing most of this round,
02:57 but he's allowed Garcia to be able to turn that corner.
03:00 Oh, there he took a little sidestep. Cut him off a little.
03:02 Robert Garcia in the fighter meeting yesterday said Ruiz,
03:07 he would describe as a boxer/counter puncher.
03:11 And when he joined us live here on Pro Box TV earlier,
03:14 said he's coming off a very good camp.
03:17 Watch out for the right hook from Leo.
03:20 He throws that really nice looping shot with the right hand that goes around guys' guards.
03:25 Round one in the books.
03:29 [crowd cheering]
03:32 [music playing]
03:38 [speaking Spanish]
03:41 [speaking Spanish]
03:44 [speaking Spanish]
03:47 [speaking Spanish]
03:50 [speaking Spanish]
03:53 [speaking Spanish]
03:57 [speaking Spanish]
03:59 He's good. He throws a lot of jabs. Go to his body.
04:02 My Spanish is getting better and better, isn't it?
04:04 Oh, yeah, Goldie.
04:06 You're a regular bilingualist.
04:08 [laughter]
04:10 I'm ambilanguist.
04:13 [speaking Spanish]
04:16 [speaking Spanish]
04:19 Robert mixes it up even in his instructions in the corner.
04:24 Spanglish?
04:25 Spanglish, exactly.
04:26 The whole gym was like that when we were in there.
04:28 It was always Spanglish.
04:29 Round number two, Garcia and Ruiz.
04:33 Main event of the evening.
04:36 Mike Goldberg with my powerful partners,
04:39 the former two-time world champion, the Magic Man, Paulie Molinaggi,
04:42 former world champion, Chris Algieri.
04:44 Glad to be with you here on a Wednesday night.
04:47 Every other Wednesday, just lock it down, Pro Box TV.
04:52 I saw a good body shot about 15 seconds ago from Garcia.
04:56 You turned that jab over into a body shot.
04:58 I'm impressed with the jab of Ruiz.
05:01 I haven't really seen much of that on the tape that I've seen,
05:03 but he's using it quite well here.
05:05 I think he's been touched Garcia at times.
05:07 And it's a weapon he should use.
05:10 He's got that long reach, big frame,
05:12 a lot of weight behind it.
05:14 He can drive opponents backwards with it.
05:16 Nice counter jab there from Garcia as well.
05:20 He's trying to put that speed in there this round.
05:22 This is a great matchup, you can tell already.
05:24 Ruiz, born in Mexico, but came to the U.S. at four months old.
05:31 So he's lived in the U.S. in the California area most of his life,
05:36 mostly in San Bernardino.
05:38 Of course, Riverside, California is where Robert Garcia
05:42 and many of his greats do their work on a daily basis.
05:46 Watch out for that inside work from Leo Ruiz.
05:49 He's going to take the body with both hands.
05:51 That body shot is one of his trademarks.
05:54 Not the low one.
05:56 Not the low one.
05:57 I want to leave a mark.
06:02 Both guys doing a good job of answering with jabs.
06:05 One guy jabs, they'll parry it, they'll slip it,
06:07 and they'll come right back with their own.
06:09 Oh, good slip inside. Hook to the inside.
06:12 I like the position they're both fighting this fight at.
06:15 Oh, good body shot again from Ruiz.
06:17 Fighting at that middle range.
06:19 Oh!
06:21 Overhand right for Ruiz.
06:23 Right over the top of the jab.
06:24 Rolled that back beautifully.
06:26 Stop!
06:30 Mutual respect between these two main eventers.
06:35 Ruiz saying to Garcia, "I think it's going to be a good fight,
06:39 an opportunity to prove I am a good fighter, get my name out there."
06:44 I've been under the radar and want to go in many's eyes from good to great.
06:49 Garcia hanging out in the wrong range.
06:51 Ruiz is a little longer, hanging out in the middle distance.
06:55 He needs to be either a half step back or a half step closer.
06:58 Ruiz is getting the better of these exchanges.
07:02 Yeah, champions, we call it all the way in, all the way out, right?
07:05 He's kind of in that middle range.
07:06 It's a lot of room.
07:07 Ooh!
07:08 Short right hand on the inside by Ruiz.
07:10 Nice push off right hand.
07:11 I tell you, we talk about Ruiz using the jab tonight.
07:14 Well, it's a good weapon to use against a guy who's kind of hanging out in that middle range,
07:18 like Garcia is.
07:19 And it's allowing for more openings.
07:22 The right hand over the top, counter is really good.
07:24 And he found a couple of good left hooks to the liver as well.
07:26 Yeah, and everything is a shotgun jab.
07:29 So there is a chance for Garcia to time it if he uses that speed and timing.
07:33 But right now we haven't seen any attempt on that.
07:35 As a matter of fact, it's been Ruiz who came over the top of a jab
07:37 with a good right hand in this round we just ended.
07:40 We may get a look at it.
07:41 Let's see here.
07:42 There it is right there, right over the top of that jab.
07:44 Beautiful textbook.
07:46 First round was a bit of a feel-out for both guys,
07:49 but second round, Ruiz separated himself.
07:51 And Garcia came back with some shots of his own too there.
07:54 They were on the gloves, though, of Ruiz.
07:56 But good reaction, at least, on the part of Garcia.
07:59 Garcia, el domo, the dome.
08:07 We say the dome from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic,
08:11 but it also translates into the tamer of lions.
08:16 And he's got a big lion across the ring tonight, Bob Santos.
08:21 Born in San Jose, California, but he has become the man
08:26 who has trained some of the best Dominican fighters, past and present.
08:32 Round three.
08:34 White and gray for Garcia, white and red for Ruiz.
08:38 Strange body shots there.
08:47 Not really sure who got the better of it.
08:49 High-level matchup of two unbeaten fighters.
08:56 Combined record of 25-0-1.
08:59 - Get my ass in this ball. No more.
09:02 - That didn't look low to me.
09:04 Maybe I didn't have the right angle, but...
09:06 Oh, nice uppercut on the inside there.
09:08 - There's a little bit of pushing down on the heads a little bit at times on the inside,
09:11 and that also can make some of the body shots stray low.
09:14 It's gonna get tricky here with these body shots.
09:18 Both guys are going to the body pretty well.
09:20 - And neither one of them is complaining about low shots either.
09:23 The ref is kind of jumping the gun on him.
09:27 - He's doing well when he answers.
09:29 When he responds with combinations, he's had the most success.
09:32 When he waits on the outside, it's all Ruiz.
09:34 - Yeah, he's a good-positioned boxer.
09:36 I mean, he's always-- he keeps himself in good position,
09:38 even if the attack is coming his way.
09:40 Keeps himself in position to be able to punch back
09:42 or set up punches himself.
09:44 - You know, I don't like the refs--
09:46 - Good right hand. - Yeah.
09:47 I don't like the refs to start themselves so early,
09:49 'cause now you're seeing both men are tentative to go to the body.
09:51 They're both, like, hesitant now.
09:54 - Good uppercut there by Ruiz on the inside.
09:57 Good body shot there on the outside
10:00 of the elbow from Garcia.
10:02 - That's an interesting mindset, though, Chris,
10:04 that you bring up, because some would say the opposite--
10:08 "Let's stay ahead of things before things get out of hand,"
10:11 but you're shaking your head no.
10:13 - No, it's a fight, man. This stuff happens.
10:15 If--you know, if a body shot strays low, it happens.
10:19 - Right. - I don't think you need to call out every one,
10:22 but you're actually breaking the action.
10:24 - One minute on the clock here in round number three.
10:29 - Ooh, nice overhand shot there from Garcia.
10:34 Ruiz comes right back with his own left hip upstairs.
10:37 - Good little action inside now.
10:40 I mean, this is becoming a foam booth kind of fight
10:42 and a tactical inside kind of fight as well.
10:44 There's catching and shooting going on,
10:46 shot selection around the sides and up the middle.
10:49 Nice work from both guys here.
10:50 - First round battle of the jabs,
10:52 third round foam booth fight.
10:54 - This is more the kind of fight we've seen Ruiz on video do, right?
10:57 - Yes. Ooh, good dig there as he pushed off.
11:00 - We want to see more jabs there on the part of Garcia.
11:02 You know, he's giving Ruiz what he wants
11:04 by fighting this kind of fight.
11:06 Garcia's not doing bad here, but Garcia's certainly more comfortable
11:09 in this kind of fight.
11:10 That little change of brains, that's more so
11:12 the things Garcia likes to do.
11:14 - Yeah, that's what I see from the tape as well.
11:16 He normally fights well from the outside,
11:18 but he was getting beat to the punch early,
11:20 but now he's bringing it inside. He's having some good success.
11:23 - Both men trying to work inside the foam booth here
11:27 late in round three.
11:30 - Good fight.
11:31 - Our main event, super well to wait,
11:33 scheduled for ten rounds.
11:36 Two weeks from tonight, we are right back here
11:39 at our world headquarters, another action-packed night
11:42 of fights on your boxing channel.
11:45 Radovoja Kaličević, the Serbian,
11:48 fighting out of St. Petersburg, Florida,
11:50 against the Brit, Mickey Ellison.
11:53 That is our main event of the evening,
11:56 two weeks from tonight, right here on Pro Box TV.
12:01 [indistinct chatter]
12:26 - Bob Santos, the man that Paulie said
12:29 in the past, the best trainer you've never heard of.
12:32 His big name right now, the Dominican,
12:35 Sal Paul Hector, Luis Garcia,
12:38 the WBA super featherweight title holder
12:41 since August of last year.
12:44 Round number four, Garcia,
12:47 13-0-1, white and gray trunks,
12:49 Ruiz 12-0, white with the red.
12:52 - Ooh, big shots here.
12:55 Garcia's been able to--
12:57 you do well with a couple of chopping right hands
12:59 in the past round and a half now.
13:02 - All right, stop. Don't fight.
13:09 Break, break. Step back.
13:11 Break. Step back.
13:13 Thank you, guys.
13:16 - If he keeps being fought at that middle distance,
13:18 middle to short range, it's gonna become a fight
13:20 of a battle of attrition
13:22 as these rounds wind down.
13:25 - Known for his very fast and heavy hands,
13:30 Raul Garcia has finished
13:33 all but two of his opponents,
13:37 three when you consider the draw
13:40 against Robert Terry
13:42 in April of this year on showbox.
13:44 - Good combination there by Ruiz.
13:47 He's backing off Garcia now.
13:49 Garcia's gotta get consistent.
13:50 Remember, we were-- earlier in the fight,
13:52 he was responding, keeping his position.
13:54 Now Ruiz is starting to bust his position a little bit
13:56 with these punches that he's throwing and landing.
13:58 - Nice shot there, right hand over the top.
14:00 Good shotgun jabs are setting up the right hand,
14:02 and then back comes Garcia.
14:04 - Yeah, that little chop right hand
14:05 has been there for Garcia.
14:06 He's used it for his advantage pretty well.
14:09 Ruiz stays up a little bit high on the inside.
14:12 - He's rolled a few,
14:14 but a couple of those have gotten through.
14:17 - Keep it.
14:18 - Good.
14:19 - Stop.
14:20 Great.
14:21 - Camp for Garcia took place mainly in Las Vegas,
14:26 finished up down the street in Orlando.
14:30 - Ooh.
14:32 Just missed with those shots.
14:33 - Man, just quick snapping jabs
14:36 by Leonardo Ruiz.
14:38 - Those left hooks, I think they're getting caught
14:40 on the elbow somewhat,
14:41 but his elbow's starting to bust in.
14:43 Ruiz is landing nice left hooks
14:45 to the outside of that elbow,
14:47 but it seems like his arm is giving in.
14:49 Those shots hurt.
14:50 Right back.
14:51 [crowd shouting]
14:54 - And he's gonna continue to try to hit that exact same spot.
14:58 - Stop.
15:00 Stop.
15:01 Great.
15:02 - Three, two, one.
15:04 - Bob Santos said Garcia,
15:07 he's a dedicated hard worker,
15:09 loves the sports,
15:12 loves the sport,
15:13 and the fans will be very entertained
15:15 by his style of fighting.
15:16 So far, so good.
15:19 - Both of you.
15:20 Last time.
15:22 Next one, your hips low,
15:23 you're gonna lose the point.
15:24 You understand?
15:25 - The hip is low.
15:27 The hip is low.
15:28 - Box.
15:29 - I don't know.
15:30 I don't know if the hip is low,
15:32 because you can't see the belly buttons
15:34 on either belt, guys.
15:35 So I don't know if the hip is low.
15:36 I mean, I don't know if that belt line is low.
15:39 It's a little touchy,
15:40 'cause usually referees,
15:41 if they can't see your belly button,
15:43 they'll say the belt line is fine.
15:45 If they can see your belly button,
15:46 then they'll say the belt line is no good.
15:48 And you can't see the belly button
15:49 on either guys
15:50 the way these guys are wearing their shorts.
15:53 They're a little high.
15:54 - And Paulie and Chris,
15:55 remember the referee in his final instructions
15:58 did say your trunks are a little high.
16:01 So the top of the trunks
16:02 won't be a low blow in that case.
16:04 - Yeah.
16:05 - My favorite ref is the one you don't hear or see.
16:07 - Yes.
16:08 - I mean, I'm not gonna go that far.
16:09 I mean, I never complained about fouls,
16:11 but I didn't appreciate when referees
16:13 just would kind of hang out and watch the fight,
16:14 'cause I felt like telling them
16:15 to go sit down in the first row and pay for the ticket.
16:17 So just 'cause I'm not complaining
16:18 doesn't mean I don't want you to ref.
16:20 But at the same time, there is a moderation there,
16:22 and you've got to kind of find that balance.
16:24 I don't see the belly button on either of these guys'
16:27 trunk belt lines,
16:28 so the belt line should be fine.
16:30 So it's kind of close.
16:31 - I don't think there's been
16:32 any blatant low blows by either man, though.
16:35 I haven't seen anything--
16:36 anything really out of the ordinary.
16:38 - And he just kind of gave a talking to both men
16:42 in that last exchange
16:43 as we have reached round number 5
16:46 of our main event of the evening.
16:48 - Nice level changes there from Garcia.
16:50 He jabbed low with a nice stab jab
16:51 that looked low through the right-hand high.
16:54 Smart of him to be going up and down
16:57 on the tall frame of Ruiz.
17:00 - Oops.
17:05 - Both men abundantly skillful.
17:09 150 amateur fights for Garcia.
17:13 - Garcia coming out of serving himself
17:22 with his boxing this round.
17:24 - And guys--both guys back on that jab.
17:29 - There's no long-range fight in this fight.
17:33 It's either middle range or close range.
17:36 - And it is Ruiz with that 3-inch reach advantage.
17:42 - And we're seeing that in that shotgun jab of his.
17:46 - Yep.
17:48 - And I know it's a point I make a lot,
17:50 but--oh, ooh.
17:52 But that middle range feints are such a dynamite weapon, man.
17:55 None of these guys really using them.
17:56 There's a little bit of rhythm, at least,
17:58 on the part of Ruiz,
17:59 where he's moving his head a lot.
18:00 Actually, on the part of Garcia, too, now.
18:03 But there's no--not a lot of feinting here.
18:06 At this range right here,
18:09 you can kind of break off a good counter left hook there.
18:12 - Ooh.
18:13 - That was hard.
18:15 - I was gonna say, Garcia actually has a good--
18:17 he does a little stab jab down low,
18:18 and then as he pulls out with a left hook upstairs,
18:20 and then, as I was about to say that,
18:22 Ruiz landed his own.
18:24 - Ruiz staying just out of range.
18:28 That double jab from Garcia a moment ago.
18:31 One minute on the clock, round 5.
18:34 - Yeah, that's why being tall and long
18:36 and having a reach advantage is such an advantage as a boxer.
18:39 Most guys I fought, I had that advantage,
18:41 and it was so helpful to get out of range.
18:43 - Yeah, but you know how to use it, especially, Jim.
18:46 - And that's the real key, Paulie.
18:47 There's one thing about being long,
18:49 and there's another thing about being long and fighting long.
18:52 - Yeah, and using it. - Yep.
18:53 - Good attempt at a roll right hand there by Ruiz.
18:56 And Garcia's reaching in a little.
18:58 - Oh. - And he's holding a counter left hook there.
19:00 He's reaching in a little bit.
19:01 Garcia's gotten himself caught a couple times reaching in.
19:04 - Ruiz with a big flurry here.
19:09 - Garcia's hurt. - Yep.
19:11 And Ruiz would love to get a finish.
19:14 - Reached in a couple of times this round.
19:25 And paid the price.
19:26 The second time he reached in and paid the price,
19:28 he wound up getting hurt.
19:30 - That knockdown actually might help Garcia,
19:32 'cause I think he was really hurt.
19:34 Now he's got a little time with the knockdown.
19:36 But he's getting hit with some big shots here, too.
19:38 Oh!
19:40 Seems untraced.
19:42 - End of the round.
19:44 - Garcia might have got saved by a feather.
19:51 - Yeah, that was a breakout round for Ruiz.
19:54 - Go back, go back, go back.
19:55 You got time for two.
19:57 - For the fucking water.
19:58 - Give me the other one.
20:00 Give me the other.
20:03 Hey, we're only looking for counter golpes,
20:06 so you're not supposed to use your center reach.
20:08 - Go to the back, go on, go on.
20:10 - Garcia causing his own problems by reaching in.
20:13 See, he's falling in there, gets hit with that left hook,
20:15 and gets hurt.
20:16 This was the second time he got caught during the round
20:18 reaching in.
20:19 The first one was a counter right hand.
20:20 This one, he ends up getting hurt,
20:22 and then the follow-up winds up getting a knockdown for Ruiz.
20:27 - Let's listen to the end of the round, guys.
20:31 - Yeah.
20:32 I believe Ruiz threw a late punch.
20:35 Yeah, very late.
20:38 - Yeah.
20:39 - It's hard to hear the bell, though.
20:40 - Yeah.
20:41 It gets louder here.
20:42 - It does get louder.
20:43 I don't know if you guys hear it at home,
20:44 but, man, the walls just bounce around,
20:46 the sounds just bounce around.
20:48 - We can barely hear each other.
20:50 We're standing right next to each other.
20:51 - We're mic'd up.
20:52 - Yeah.
20:53 I can hear you.
20:54 - The Magic Man, Pauly Malignaggi,
20:57 Chris Algieri, Mike Goldberg,
20:59 round six of our main event of the evening.
21:02 Here on a Wednesday night on Pro Box TV,
21:05 your boxing channel.
21:06 - Ruiz doing a really good job of mixing things up.
21:08 He just came out with a--
21:09 you know, we heard his man with a left hook last round.
21:11 Came out with a big chop in the right hand just now,
21:13 and then going with a double, triple left hook to the body.
21:16 - Garcia's trying to work the body himself,
21:19 staying tight, staying low.
21:22 - Is this the distance, the range
21:24 at which Garcia should be fighting, champ?
21:26 - No, absolutely not, especially when he's been hurt.
21:29 He needs to be on the outside a little bit,
21:31 'cause he does-- he was fighting well
21:33 in that outside distance using his boxing ability, but--
21:36 - Yeah, I just think he ought to make the adjustment
21:38 with not reaching in.
21:39 Other than that, I mean, the middle range for him
21:41 was probably a more convenient place.
21:42 Ruiz is starting to get closer more
21:44 and be more comfortable inside.
21:45 - At this point, though, if he's a little rocked,
21:47 even the punches that he's partially blocking are hurting him.
21:50 - Yeah.
21:51 And Ruiz is confident now.
21:53 He's ripping shots with authority.
21:55 - I've been impressed with Ruiz's ability
21:57 to plant his feet and load up on shots,
21:59 but still stay tight and defensively sound.
22:03 Nice short little right hand.
22:06 - Was waiting for it on cue after you talked about it, Chris.
22:10 - And plants his-- holds his ground really well.
22:13 - Yep.
22:15 - Defense is subtle enough that he can counter in position.
22:19 - And use the key word there, champ, "subtle,"
22:21 because he even uses his shoulders in there.
22:23 He kind of rolls with the shots, uses his gloves to block.
22:25 Not taking a lot of clean punches is Ruiz
22:27 while staying in that range of fire.
22:30 A little headbutt, though, he did take there.
22:32 - This is a vast improvement from what I've seen on tape
22:34 in Ruiz.
22:35 He looks really sharp tonight,
22:36 showing new aspects to his game.
22:38 - Robert Garcia did tell us earlier
22:40 he's coming off his best camp.
22:42 His 24-year-old improves on a daily basis,
22:45 looking for a showcase win
22:48 against an unbeaten fighter, an unbeaten opponent,
22:51 in 13-0-1 Raul Garcia.
22:54 - Give Garcia credit for trying to push back Ruiz to the ropes,
23:00 trying to at least be physical and bully him.
23:03 He's not been able to get his attention
23:05 with a big shot landed this round,
23:06 but at least he's been trying to be physical
23:08 and push back the momentum of Ruiz.
23:10 - And he's got a lot of grounders.
23:11 He gets caught leaning in again.
23:12 - It's that middle distance.
23:13 He's getting clipped there.
23:14 Like you said, Cenk, when he was all the way in,
23:16 he's smothering the shots of Ruiz,
23:17 but when he's in that middle distance, he gets cracked.
23:19 - And you know what?
23:20 You talk about he has that fade,
23:21 but on the inside, being on that front foot
23:22 is hurting him right now.
23:23 - Yeah, it doesn't matter if you're that close.
23:25 Oh, good body shot.
23:26 - That's Ruiz what you talked about earlier.
23:29 Economy of motion, Chris.
23:32 Stays planted, stays on those feet,
23:35 and delivers fire.
23:37 - Ruiz did a great job mixing those punches up.
23:39 Right hands, left hooks high, left hooks low.
23:42 There's that chopping right hand over the top.
23:49 I talked about the different punch variation
23:51 that Ruiz has been successful with tonight.
23:53 There we see the chopping right hand over the top.
23:55 Catch and shoot with the left hook lands as well.
23:57 Plus the great left hook studies he's been throwing
23:59 to the body consistently since the beginning of the fight.
24:02 - Hold it still, sir.
24:05 - You need more jabs, but with more heat.
24:10 And every opportunity, not just for the head.
24:14 Body and head, but a lot of jabs.
24:17 I'm telling him he's gonna try to learn me again this time.
24:21 Don't fall for it, he's gonna put a joke.
24:23 He's trying to counterpunch you.
24:25 - Santos asking for more jabs.
24:27 Obviously, to get more jabs,
24:28 you're gonna have to fight at a different range,
24:30 which I think would be smart of Garcia
24:33 to change his range and then be at that jabbing range.
24:35 But you have the creativity with your jab
24:38 because Ruiz is starting to come over the top of it.
24:41 And like we talked about, Garcia stays on that front foot
24:44 and again, counterattack over the top of the jab.
24:47 - White and gray for Garcia.
24:50 White and red for Leonardo Ruiz.
24:54 Definitely the toughest opponent that Ruiz has faced
24:57 in his professional career.
24:59 - And he's looked the best that I've seen so far.
25:02 - Jeff, you said the magic word, "range."
25:04 This fight is all about range,
25:06 and Ruiz has been controlling it and taking advantage of it.
25:09 - Stop, stop, stop.
25:11 - Garcia trying to get himself right back into this fight.
25:25 - [shouting]
25:28 - Uppercut lands for Raul Garcia.
25:36 Both men look to fight.
25:39 A lot of kinetic chess going on right now.
25:47 - Garcia's tough, man.
25:49 He's taking some big shots all night long.
25:52 - Yeah, he's stubborn, though.
25:54 Stubborn. Bob Santos told him, "Use your jab,"
25:56 and instead he's languishing on the inside.
25:58 Well, you're not gonna be using your jab at this distance.
26:01 - I don't think he really has a choice.
26:05 I think he's a little rocked upstairs
26:07 to get hit with big shots in that middle distance.
26:10 Oof, right there.
26:13 - And as we talked about earlier,
26:15 Ruiz, when there is space,
26:17 does a very good job of fighting long.
26:21 - [shouting]
26:23 - Does a really good job at mid-range and in tight as well.
26:26 First career ten-round fight for Leonardo Ruiz.
26:34 - Break, break, break. There you go.
26:40 - Third ten-rounder for Garcia.
26:43 One ended in the second, the other in the sixth.
26:50 [shouting]
26:52 - So as it was in our co-main event,
26:55 we are getting very close to uncharted waters
26:59 for both of our featured fighters.
27:03 - Good right hand there from Garcia.
27:05 - Yeah, that was the best punch he's done in a few rounds.
27:07 The problem is Ruiz worked right through it.
27:09 - Under 30, round seven.
27:11 - Oh, man. Just missed with that.
27:16 Both guys got their head off line.
27:18 - That's why they tell you, keep your head off line
27:20 when you throw the right hand. You just learned why.
27:22 If you don't get your head off line,
27:24 that's the kind of right hand you're liable to take
27:26 when you're throwing your own right hand.
27:28 - That could have been the hand that night for either guy.
27:30 - Another entertaining Wednesday night
27:37 on your boxing channel.
27:39 [cheers and applause]
27:43 [shouting]
27:45 - You see that left hook on the inside,
27:51 countering off of the one-two, and you see it's the same shot,
27:54 but again, you see the front foot.
27:56 As Garcia gets on his front foot,
27:58 he leaves it out on a--on a--on a--
28:01 - On a pedestal. - On a platter.
28:03 - On a platter. - That's the end of the word.
28:05 Leaves his head out on a platter, 'cause he's on that front foot
28:07 when he's throwing those shots.
28:09 It's how he got hurt a few rounds ago,
28:11 and he's trying to move his way inside on that front foot,
28:13 and Luis caught him, and he gets caught there
28:15 on that replay in the same matter.
28:17 He's not making the adjustment, and of course,
28:19 he's fighting at the wrong range for Bob Sanders' take,
28:21 because Bob Sanders is the one who was asking for jabs,
28:23 and at that, at close range, you're not gonna get those.
28:26 - Yeah, you might get 'em, but you're gonna get countered,
28:28 though, especially with a longer guy.
28:30 - Especially when you're on the front foot.
28:32 - Serving it up on a platter.
28:34 - Didn't think of the word, guys.
28:36 I don't understand it.
28:38 - It's very rare for you, Paulie.
28:40 - I was thinking, and I just couldn't think of the word.
28:42 It just wouldn't come out, right?
28:44 - Which has happened twice in Paulie's life.
28:46 Tonight, and we're not sure when the other time is.
28:48 - We have fought a lot of fights.
28:50 - Yes, we have. A lot of good fights, too.
28:53 Eighth round of our main event of the evening.
28:56 My powerful partners,
28:58 the former two-time world champion, the Magic Man,
29:00 Paulie Malignaggi, former world champion,
29:02 guided by Robert Garcia,
29:04 who is in the corner of Leonardo Ruiz,
29:06 Chris Algier.
29:09 - I see, I see.
29:11 - See, the problem here is that I think Garcia has is
29:13 he's trying to fight fire with fire.
29:15 You gotta be tactical with Ruiz.
29:17 You know, Ruiz likes this fire fight.
29:19 - Oh.
29:21 Ruiz again over the top.
29:23 - Trying to load up shots.
29:25 You're trying to load up shots against Ruiz.
29:27 Use your speed. Set up, change the angle.
29:29 You know, you're trying to throw these ones and twos
29:31 at a time with a lot of weight behind them,
29:33 just like Ruiz is trying to do.
29:35 That's Ruiz's fight. If you're Garcia,
29:37 you're going to have to fight Ruiz.
29:39 Because Ruiz is a stronger fighter, clearly,
29:41 physically and punching power-wise.
29:43 He's the one that has done more damage in the fight
29:45 and has hurt you.
29:47 - I'll tell you one thing.
29:49 I wouldn't want to play poker against Robert Garcia
29:51 because he shows no expression, positive or negative.
29:53 - Goldie, you really nailed it on the head.
29:55 I've been saying that. I've been thinking that all night long.
29:57 I'm like, "Man, this kid gets hit with big shots,
29:59 and it's hurt, and it doesn't show it on his face at all."
30:01 - Nothing.
30:03 - But it doesn't make the adjustment either,
30:05 and I'm not fighting on poker.
30:07 - [laughs]
30:09 - Ooh.
30:11 - Again, this is the wrong kind of fight for me,
30:13 and I think maybe if you don't get it early on,
30:15 as the rounds wear on, you got to start to understand,
30:17 "Okay, this is not the kind of fight
30:19 I need to be fighting against this opponent.
30:21 This benefits him. I'm going to make that adjustment."
30:23 And we have not seen that on the part of Garcia.
30:25 I mean, he hasn't even looked to the corner.
30:27 - To beat him in poker, though,
30:29 you're going to have to have the courage.
30:31 You're not going to be able to bluff the guy
30:33 who knows nothing.
30:35 60 seconds, round 8.
30:37 Main event scheduled for 10.
30:39 - You know, but also what I'm seeing,
30:41 Ruiz is not just bigger and stronger.
30:43 He's just better. He's a better fighter.
30:45 He's got more wrinkles.
30:47 You know, he's more sure of what he wants to do.
30:49 - Stop!
30:51 - Last fight.
30:53 - One more time.
30:55 - 12-0.
30:57 - No more.
30:59 - Senator is being merciful this time.
31:01 - You're losing the fight. I'm not going to make a point.
31:03 But stop, all right?
31:05 - All right, really, this is the last time.
31:07 - Yeah.
31:09 [laughter]
31:11 [shouting]
31:13 [shouting]
31:15 - You can tell, Ruiz,
31:17 he wants that emphatic
31:19 way to win this fight. - No question.
31:21 - Big shots.
31:23 - There's a nice left that lands.
31:25 - But Garcia is very tough.
31:27 Taking these big shots, still coming forward.
31:29 - Round!
31:31 - Sit back.
31:33 - Final seconds
31:35 of the round.
31:37 [bell ringing]
31:39 [shouting]
31:41 [cheers and applause]
31:43 [upbeat music]
31:45 - Very slow walk back to the corner from Garcia.
31:47 - I don't want to-- - Can you blame him?
31:49 - No.
31:51 [indistinct chatter]
31:53 [cheers and applause]
31:55 [upbeat music]
31:57
31:59 [cheers and applause]

32:31 to get better and better.
32:33 And when you have
32:35 Freddie Roach in the building two weeks ago,
32:37 now you have Bob Santos, Robert Garcia tonight.
32:39 Things are
32:41 onward and upward.
32:43 Superman back again, Roy Jones Jr.
32:45 And a happy
32:47 50th birthday to the Hall of Famer,
32:49 Juan Manuel Marquez,
32:51 on our Spanish broadcast
32:53 with Ricardo Salas.
32:55 They are both thrown here and around now.
32:57 Unchartered waters.
32:59 - Yeah, Goldie,
33:01 we got a lot of talent in this room,
33:03 and I don't mean the fighters.
33:05 - Yes, absolutely.
33:07 I think Paulie mentioned that earlier.
33:09 - Ooh. [laughs]
33:11 - Ricardo Sal--
33:13 It's Ricardo's birthday, I understand, tomorrow.
33:15 I don't know.
33:17 - We got a lot of birthdays.
33:19 - We all get married every single day.
33:21 - [laughs]
33:23 - My manager used to say, "It's not bad
33:25 to get old, because if you're not getting old, you're dead."
33:27 - That's very true.
33:29 When the clock stops, it stops. - That's an excellent way to put it.
33:31 Oh, good uppercut on the inside
33:33 from Ruiz. Man, Garcia's tough.
33:35 He's taking some big shots.
33:37 And Ruiz
33:39 has not let up all night long.
33:41 - I don't wake up feeling my age,
33:45 though, guys. I just feel about 10 years older.
33:47 [laughter]
33:49 - Too many crosschecks
33:51 during all those hockey games.
33:53 - Ooh, those don't help, right?
33:55 - No, they do not, Paulie.
33:57 - Watch Garcia right now, man.
33:59 He kind of just slides in on the front foot.
34:01 Watch what he does right now.
34:03 See, he literally at least went for a body shot,
34:05 but you see he kind of falls in on his front foot.
34:07 - He's--yeah, he's--
34:09 - And Ruiz reads it perfectly.
34:11 Pumping the jab
34:13 into the face
34:15 of Leonardo Ruiz.
34:17 - First time into round--
34:19 first time into round 9
34:21 for both of these men.
34:23 - Garcia, I don't know if it's fatigue
34:25 or if it's just the damage he's retaining,
34:27 but he's just falling into these shots.
34:29 - And you see, there's also no adjustment.
34:31 It's like he breaks, and he goes right back into the mix.
34:33 You go break, and you go right back into the mix.
34:35 That's what Ruiz is supposed to be looking for,
34:37 to go right back into the mix.
34:39 You should be taking some steps to the side,
34:41 change the angle on the jab, and start in the box
34:43 and make an adjustment. You know, look, you're gonna break,
34:45 and you're gonna go right back into the mix.
34:47 - There's no thinking. He's like an automatic pilot.
34:49 He gets hit with a counter left hook there
34:51 as he puts his head on the platter again.
34:53 - There it is. [laughs]
34:55 - He's gonna do it again.
34:57 Like I said, he's an automatic pilot.
34:59 There he goes again.
35:01 - Seth, to reach--
35:03 to go through the levels
35:05 of a sport like this, there's so many little things
35:07 that you've got to come up with, learn,
35:09 adjust to, and keep them
35:11 inside your repertoire.
35:13 You can't be good and still get stuck at a certain level.
35:15 It's so difficult to go through all the levels.
35:17 It takes a lot of intelligence
35:19 in there and an ability
35:21 to adjust. - This is why
35:23 world champions, being in that
35:25 world-class status, very few and far
35:27 between. - And, Chris,
35:29 you commented earlier, as round
35:31 9 is going to come to conclusion,
35:33 that you see major
35:35 steps being made by Leonardo Ruiz.
35:37 - Oh, yeah. This is by far his best performance
35:39 against by far his best opponent.
35:41 He's made adjustments that I haven't
35:43 seen him be able to do in fights. The rolling
35:45 of the shoulders, the subtle defense,
35:47 the punch selection.
35:49 I like everything I'm seeing from Ruiz today.
35:51 - Yeah, he's the kind of fighter
35:53 who fights inside and yet
35:55 you still don't hit him clean.
35:57 It's that little
35:59 subtle kind of defense, you know what I'm saying?
36:01 Even within the mud.
36:03 - Yeah, it's one thing to be
36:05 tough and go back and forth, but yeah,
36:07 he's not there for the receipt.
36:09 - But even if he is, he's covering,
36:11 he's catching, he's kind of going with it,
36:13 he's kind of riding with it.
36:15 - High-level
36:17 fighters,
36:19 they do it until
36:21 they get it right. World champions
36:23 do it until they don't get it wrong.
36:25 - Yeah.
36:27 Good point, Gold.
36:29 - Let's go, let's go, let's go.
36:31 - 10th and final round.
36:33 San Bernardino, California,
36:37 versus Leonardo Ruiz.
36:41 Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic,
36:44 Raul Garcia.
36:46 Three minutes remain.
36:50 Our main event of the evening,
36:52 white and gray for Garcia.
36:54 He's 13-0-1, Ruiz in the white and red.
36:57 He is 12-0.
36:59 Big shot.
37:05 - And the way he's been making
37:07 a lot of adjustments, that's been something
37:09 Ruiz has adjusted to. He has seen,
37:11 as the night wears on, Garcia flies in
37:13 on that front foot, and he's caught him
37:15 coming several times in the second half
37:17 of the fight.
37:19 - Quick hands
37:24 from Raul Garcia.
37:26 - Where was his speed before?
37:28 He was trying to load up against Ruiz,
37:30 and he said, "Load up for load up."
37:32 Now he's using that speed. I mean,
37:34 if you use your jab on the outside,
37:36 you might set up, you're gonna cause problems.
37:38 - Garcia's actually looking better this round
37:40 than he has in a while. - Yeah, because he just
37:42 changed his speed up on his punches a little bit.
37:44 - Maybe too little, too late, though.
37:50 First time, both men, 24 years old,
37:58 in round 10,
38:00 minute 40 from going the distance.
38:02 - You know what always amazes me? Some guys' faces
38:04 just don't mark up. - I know.
38:06 - Look at all the punches that he's eaten tonight.
38:08 Ruiz, who hasn't been hit all that much,
38:10 has marks all over him.
38:12 - I mean, I don't know, I used to think that
38:14 about guys like Luis Issa Chavez.
38:16 - What kind of skin? What do you think?
38:18 - I mean, Meldrick Taylor beat him up all over the ring,
38:20 and it was Meldrick who looked like he was getting crushed.
38:22 I mean, don't get me wrong, Meldrick got hit too, but...
38:24 It's that reptile skin.
38:31 - These balls are 8 ounces, man.
38:33 They're supposed to mark you.
38:35 - Big swing and a miss by Ruiz.
38:39 - Ruiz wants a big stoppage.
38:41 - Yeah, but Garcia's having a good round.
38:45 - Really good round.
38:47 Perhaps his best round.
38:49 - Stop!
38:53 There you go. Come on, don't wrestle. Let's go.
38:56 Come on, guys, get on back to the minute left.
39:00 - Big breath taken by Leonardo Ruiz.
39:03 - Yeah, both guys are feeling this 10th round.
39:05 - Yep.
39:07 30 seconds remain.
39:11 - They lost a mouthpiece, too.
39:15 They're really all feeling it. - Yeah, they're feeling it.
39:17 They fell off a cliff.
39:19 - Let's see if this break makes them--
39:23 gives them one last burst of energy.
39:25 - Not a lot of time left. 25 seconds to go.
39:29 - 25 seconds to go.
39:31 - Garcia got clipped.
39:37 - That front foot of Garcia,
39:39 beating on that front foot when he fell in combinations,
39:41 it's gonna be something he's gonna have to work on
39:43 when he goes back to the J-Ref.
39:45 There's one thing he's gonna have to learn from this fight.
39:47 That's one of those things for sure.
39:49 - These two men have put on a show.
39:51 They go the distance.
39:57 - And our main event of the evening,
40:00 Raul Garcia and Leonardo Ruiz.
40:05 Another great night of fights here on Pro Box TV.
40:11 - Some good action here we have in this fight.
40:26 You see Ruiz on the inside was getting--
40:28 was finishing the exchanges a little bit better,
40:31 getting the sharper shots.
40:33 It wasn't for--Garcia wasn't landing.
40:35 It was just that Ruiz was starting to land better.
40:37 He was finishing the exchanges better,
40:39 and he was sharper, and eventually he was able
40:41 to start hurting Garcia more and more as the fight progressed,
40:44 especially here in that fifth round.
40:46 He catches Garcia coming with a big left hook,
40:48 and then the follow-up assault winds up dropping Garcia
40:52 for the only knockdown of the fight.
40:55 - It was hard on Garcia to survive the round,
40:57 as the bell did save him,
40:59 and then he wound up escaping the round and coming back,
41:02 you know, and surviving to the end of the fight.
41:04 But Ruiz continued to, you know, be more dominant
41:07 in the second half of the fight.
41:09 We didn't really see many adjustments made
41:11 on the part of Garcia.
41:13 We know Bob Santos was asking for more jabs.
41:15 At this range, you're not gonna get those jabs,
41:17 and so there's a nice sharp one, too, from Ruiz.
41:19 - Yeah, the better, cleaner work
41:21 was coming from Ruiz all night long.
41:23 It looked like he was more sure of what he wanted to do.
41:25 He knew what range he was supposed to be at,
41:27 and he knew what to do when he was in those set ranges.
41:30 The last round, Garcia put on a hell of an effort,
41:34 but even in that round, he still got hit
41:35 with some big shots from Ruiz.
41:37 One of the better rounds of the fight for Garcia
41:39 was the tenth, but too little too late for my liking.
41:43 - Judges have rendered their decision.
41:48 Once again, here is Mark Lichtenfeld.
41:51 (bell ringing)
41:53 - Ladies and gentlemen, after ten hard-hitting rounds,
41:56 we go to the scorecards.
41:58 Rodolfo Aguilar scores at 95-94,
42:01 95-95,
42:04 94-94,
42:06 Garcia.
42:08 Alexander Levin scores about 96-93,
42:12 96-96,
42:15 Ruiz.
42:18 And Thomas Nardone scores about 98-91,
42:21 98-91.
42:24 Your winner by split decision,
42:26 el ganador por decision,
42:28 Davidia Leonardo Ruiz!
42:34 (cheering)
42:36 - Split decision victory for Leonardo Ruiz,
42:40 who moves to 13-0.
42:43 (cheering)
42:46 - Judges really saw the fight very differently
42:49 from one another.
42:51 I hear numbers, Pauly, and I just wait patiently.
42:54 You're not your sweet patient.
