00:00 >> Your play calling in the first quarter was very aggressive, 10 passes,
00:03 four, five runs, and a lot of throws down the field.
00:05 Was that your plan coming into the first quarter to attack with a pass like that?
00:08 >> No, it was to be balanced.
00:10 We just, you know, it would have came out, we've finished with a pick and stuff.
00:16 So it wasn't any, we didn't make a conscious decision,
00:18 we're gonna come out throwing.
00:19 It was some of the looks we had and felt we were moving the ball pretty good doing
00:23 it. >> Well, it's been so good,
00:24 almost every single week.
00:26 Can you almost say, hey, he was due for something like this, and
00:30 let's see what happens next?
00:31 Can you put it in context like that?
00:33 >> I mean, I just think the fact he's played this long and
00:36 never had a game like this, I mean, is pretty unusual.
00:40 I think that's the reality of the NFL.
00:41 I'm not saying it's bound to happen, but I mean,
00:44 wish he didn't have as many picks today.
00:46 But like I said, I think one of them was one he'd really like to have back.
00:51 The other three, I think, were unfortunate.
00:53 We played a good team, didn't play our best football today.
00:55 And that's what happens.
00:57 We lost a game that we really wanted to win.
01:00 We knew this was a big one.
01:01 Our guys are real disappointed tonight.
01:03 They should be.
01:04 But when it comes down to it, we're still in the same situation that we were before
01:09 the game started, and we gotta take care of our business.
01:12 And that's why it's all right to be upset tonight.
01:14 We put a lot into that and didn't get out of what we expected to.
01:18 But we gotta make sure we're ready for Washington when they come back on
01:20 Wednesday.
01:20 And coaches will be in there tomorrow, but a short week will keep them away and
01:25 make sure we got a game plan ready for them on Wednesday.
01:27 >> Did the offense feel like it went back on the McCaffrey touchdown drive where
01:31 you got a lot of yards and then you finished it off with a touchdown?
01:34 Did you feel like it was back or that things were still discombobulated?
01:38 >> No, we didn't feel like it went away.
01:40 We just, it's hard to score points when you turn it over.
01:44 And we turned it over three times in the first half.
01:46 And I think we had nine yards of play at halftime.
01:49 Thought we got a number of explosives.
01:52 And we had 13 points to show for, or 12.
01:55 It was 12, right?
01:57 With the safety, so we got 10 on offense.
01:59 And I was just, thought we were doing some good things.
02:02 We just, in order to score, you can't give it back to them.
02:05 You gotta finish, and whether kicking a field goal or crossing the goal line.
02:08 And when we were moving the ball,
02:10 it doesn't matter how you move the ball if you don't score.
02:12 And that's what we're gonna do today.
02:14 >> You guys had a pretty specific game plan to keep Lamar in the pocket.
02:17 How do you feel like you defended him today?
02:18 And do you think the defense played well enough to win?
02:20 All things considered, like ignoring the penalty.
02:24 >> I mean, no one played well enough to win.
02:26 I think if everyone looks at the score and see how that went.
02:28 I was encouraged with a number of things.
02:30 I loved how they came out.
02:31 But the penalties, the number of first downs.
02:35 There was times I thought we did a real good job containing Lamar.
02:38 But just as a team, we gave him too many opportunities.
02:42 And when they get too many opportunities, to me, based off our team,
02:45 he's gonna end up having his, and he did.
02:49 He made some plays, we missed some tackles,
02:51 which he's gonna do to everybody when they get in space.
02:54 But we had our moments.
02:55 But those moments, you gotta capitalize on them in all three phases, and we did it.
03:01 >> How do you expect- >> Going into the play,
03:04 you said that you thought that your team, your defense looked tired.
03:08 Is that at all a concern as the year's ending,
03:11 that fatigue might be an issue to end the season?
03:16 >> I think that is for everybody.
03:18 No difference in anyone, but I mean,
03:22 we're the same as everyone else in the NFL right now.
03:24 >> How do you expect Brock to bounce back from a game like this?
03:27 >> Brock will bounce back.
03:28 He'll be in there tomorrow looking at the film.
03:30 He'll come Wednesday ready to go.
03:32 Hopefully, his stinger clears up, which I expect it to.
03:35 And our whole team will bounce back.
03:38 >> Steve Darnham.
03:39 >> I thought he came in and did a good job, a real good job.
03:41 Led us to a touchdown there.
03:43 Wish we would have scored again there at the end.
03:45 He was in a tough situation there with some of the two minute stuff.
03:48 Some of the guys who were just in and out with some of the receivers, the O-line.
03:53 Just some of the injuries and substitutions we had, but he had good command.
03:56 And I didn't see what happened at the end.
03:58 I was looking down the field.
04:00 I don't know what happened on the sack, so I'll review that.
04:03 But I was happy with Sam.
04:05 >> Greg, offensive line injuries, was Banks a re-aggravation of his turf toe?
04:11 >> I mean, they said it was his toe and it was the same foot, so I'm assuming so.
04:15 >> And then if Trent or Jaylin can't play next week,
04:19 is Burford the next option there?
04:21 >> Yes, yeah.
04:22 >> And Trent Williams had a groin, didn't return.
04:25 Jaylin Moore had a concussion, didn't return.
04:28 Brock Purdy, stinger, didn't return.
04:30 Aaron Banks, toe, didn't return.
04:33 And Ambry Thomas, the hamstring.
04:35 Go ahead.
04:36 >> What's your message to the team after a game like this?
04:40 >> I thought we came out hard, ready to go.
04:42 Offense, defense, special teams.
04:44 Getting the safety, moving the ball.
04:48 But for that first half when you have those three turnovers,
04:54 and you do those things and you miss some opportunities and you're down 16 to 12.
04:59 You got not much to show for.
05:00 I thought we blew a bunch of opportunities in that first half.
05:04 In the second half, that third quarter was a rough one.
05:07 When we get another turnover, the 100 yards and penalties.
05:12 And when we had that punt and false start before it, I believe,
05:15 the personal foul out of balance, we just twice our defense had it.
05:19 On their side of the 50 and the third, and then unraveled after that.
05:22 So anytime you got five turnovers over 100 yards and
05:25 penalties, that's how it should be.
05:28 >> And the exception that Brock threw is separate, but
05:31 is there anything generally going on that they were doing or
05:34 that he was a little off on?
05:36 So you can just kind of describe what happened with those picks?
05:39 >> Yeah, I mean, the one that he was off on was the first one.
05:41 Just read the coverage wrong and didn't expect someone to be back there and
05:47 made a bad decision on the first one.
05:49 Second one, corner made a hell of a play, blitz, and he couldn't get it over him.
05:53 The guy tipped it and ended up making it to himself.
05:57 The third one, scrambling, I didn't really see what happened on it.
06:02 I mean, I saw the end result.
06:03 I don't know what happened on the ball, whether 14 made a play,
06:05 whether they both hit it at the same time.
06:07 But he broke out of the pocket on a big third down, had George and
06:10 14 coming back to him and threw it right at them.
06:13 And it just bounced up and got another tip.
06:15 And then the fourth one in the third quarter, and
06:17 he was making the right decision, going to Christian on a check down.
06:20 And someone hit him from the right side, and
06:22 the ball came out sideways and went right to their linebacker.
06:24 So I thought the first one was a big mistake, and
06:28 the other three was pretty unfortunate for him.
06:31 >> He hasn't had a game like this, really.
06:34 What did you see in his demeanor just as this was going on?
06:37 What did you see from him?
06:38 >> I didn't mind his demeanor.
06:39 I mean, he stayed in there, kept battling.
06:41 I mean, our whole team struggled there in the second half, so
06:43 it just wasn't him.
06:45 I know he was disappointed not being able to finish it there, but
06:48 getting that stinger again, I just wanted to keep him out of there and
06:52 ready for him to bounce back next week.
06:55 >> Could he have gone back in if he didn't have that stinger?
06:57 >> Possibly, I didn't even ask.
06:59 I know he had a bad stinger, and we had three alignment out at the time.
07:03 And I want him to go in and not be ready for next week.
07:07 >> You're concerned about beyond this week?
07:09 >> Nothing I'm concerned about, but you know how stingers are.
07:12 It could be worse tomorrow, but I think he'll be all right.
07:14 >> Henry Thomas is answering injury related to Jason Barrett going in
07:18 in the third quarter?
07:20 >> No, we wanted to get Barrett going a little bit just to mix him in there,
07:24 get his feet wet.
07:25 It's been a while since he's played, so he's been doing some good things in
07:28 practice, so we wanted to give him an op out there just a little bit.
07:30 And then I think we mixed in some more as Ambry had that, but
07:34 also went with Luter a bunch too.
07:36 >> Now he's mostly played outside in his career.
07:39 It seemed like somewhat of a big ask, hadn't played since 2021,
07:43 into playing the slot.
07:45 I mean, did you guys consider like,
07:46 is this maybe too much in a game like this to put him out there?
07:51 >> I mean, that's what he's been playing here these last two weeks.
07:53 That's what he played for the four weeks he was in Houston.
07:55 That's what he wants to play, and that's what we think he looks the best at, and
07:58 where he can help us the most.
07:59 So we think all the NFL games are big, regardless of which one,
08:04 especially this time of year.
08:06 And we felt he was the best guy for us with how practice had been going and for
08:10 our roster right now.
08:10 >> Do you have any early sense on Trent's groin injury?
08:15 >> I don't.
08:16 He tried to go back in.
08:18 Trainer didn't think it was a good idea, so
08:20 we'll get the MRI tomorrow and see how it goes.
08:23 >> You mentioned that third quarter,
08:24 you just haven't seen this team kind of get knocked around for a full quarter.
08:28 Do you think they got demoralized a little bit?
08:30 What was kind of the feeling as that was happening?
08:34 >> I don't think we did anything on offense, and we turned it over.
08:38 Then we had the punt, which basically was a turnover,
08:40 because of their return, and then the personal foul.
08:42 And that's a good offense, too.
08:47 I mean, there's some guys that are hard to tackle.
08:48 They are gonna do that.
08:49 I thought our defense came out ready to go, and we're doing a decent job.
08:53 And they only can do it for so long.
08:54 I thought the way we were struggling on offense in the third quarter
08:58 led to some missed tackles.
08:59 I think we gave five first downs on penalties today.
09:02 Saw that happen, so no, I'm not gonna sit and say they're demoralized or anything.
09:06 I just, we weren't very balanced throughout our whole team today.
09:09 And I thought they came out ready to go, but
09:12 when you turn the ball over, it doesn't really matter.
09:14 And then the way that third quarter went, that was some bad football.
09:17 And by the time the fourth started, it was out of hand.
