00:12 Hello and welcome to Screen Babble,
00:15 your guide to what to watch.
00:16 We'll be tuning into hours and hours of TV
00:18 so we can tell you what you need to be switching on
00:20 and what's to be avoided
00:21 for the last time this year.
00:23 I'm your host, Kelly Creighton
00:25 and I'm here with
00:25 National World TV critic, Stephen Ross
00:28 whilst we
00:29 look back last week.
00:30 This week, we're looking forward.
00:32 Last week was a great episode, by the way.
00:33 If you haven't watched it, everyone,
00:35 you need to get back or listen to it.
00:36 And get back on it and check that out.
00:39 So, yeah, this week we are looking forward to
00:42 what is going to be happening in 2024
00:44 in the world of TV and streaming.
00:47 Remember, if you want to see our faces,
00:48 you can head over to Freeview channel 276.
00:51 You think I'd know this off by heart by now.
00:53 Shots, which is brought to you by a network of journalists
00:55 across the country
00:56 who are transforming stories
00:57 at the heart of your community into great TV.
00:59 You'll find true crime stories,
01:01 football news and analysis,
01:02 plus coverage of lifestyle TV,
01:04 film and much more.
01:06 So, last week was all the old stuff,
01:09 old news.
01:10 I mean, you can still watch
01:11 most of that stuff,
01:12 but we're talking about the new stuff this week.
01:15 But we're going to follow
01:16 a similar sort of format to last week
01:17 and take a couple of these each to tell you about.
01:20 So, Stephen, talk to us about
01:21 what is up first on your list of things.
01:23 So this isn't necessarily,
01:25 because we haven't seen these,
01:26 we haven't seen previews of these.
01:27 This isn't actually a recommendation.
01:29 It's more like,
01:29 oh, this should be interesting
01:30 or I'm quite looking forward to this
01:32 because we've seen some of it before or whatever.
01:35 So yeah, what's up first?
01:37 Well, I'm going to kick off with Masters of the Air
01:39 and I imagine it will be pretty good
01:41 because it's another companion series
01:44 to Band of Brothers,
01:45 which is widely recognised
01:48 as one of the sort of best limited series ever made.
01:51 Absolutely.
01:52 Band of Brothers followed the American troops
01:56 advancing into Germany
01:57 towards the end of the Second World War,
01:59 featured some very intense scenes,
02:02 the liberation of the death camp among them,
02:05 and a lot of very brutal fighting
02:08 was a great, great series.
02:12 It was followed up a few years later
02:14 with The Pacific,
02:15 which followed the,
02:16 obviously the Pacific theatre of the war
02:18 with the conflict with Japan, et cetera.
02:21 And now we have Masters of the Air,
02:24 which follows the bombing campaigns
02:27 of the Americans in their flying fortresses
02:29 over Nazi Germany.
02:31 Mm-hmm.
02:32 So it's...
02:34 Is it the same producers
02:36 or who's the same from it?
02:38 Like what's the...
02:39 So the cast is obviously entirely different.
02:42 Yeah.
02:43 In terms of the creators,
02:45 it's John Orloff,
02:48 who was a writer on Band of Brothers,
02:51 is the creator of this show,
02:52 along with John Shibbon,
02:54 who I don't think did work on the others.
02:56 He's known for writing on The Exiles,
02:59 a little bit of Breaking Bad,
03:00 a little bit of Ozark.
03:02 And it will be directed by
03:04 Kariyoshi Fukunaga,
03:07 who you may not have heard of,
03:08 but he directed No Time to Die
03:11 and the full True Detective series as well.
03:14 Oh, okay.
03:15 So it's in pretty safe hands, I think.
03:18 I mean, I loved No Time to Die.
03:22 It was originally slated to be on HBO,
03:25 which is where the other,
03:27 the Pacific and Band of Brothers
03:28 was originally released,
03:29 but it will be on Apple TV instead,
03:31 coming on the 26th of January
03:34 with two episodes.
03:35 That's quite soon.
03:36 It is, and then it'll be airing weekly,
03:38 so it'll sort of end in March.
03:40 It's got a fantastic-looking cast so far,
03:44 Barry Kern and Austin Butler among it.
03:47 Oh, wow.
03:48 Many others.
03:51 But yeah, essentially it's
03:52 following the fighter pilots
03:57 five miles above the ground
03:59 as they go up behind enemy lines.
04:01 The 11 men inside one of the bombers,
04:04 which was known as a flying fortress,
04:07 as they battle the German fighters.
04:10 It was filmed pretty much entirely
04:13 in Southern England as well.
04:14 So Dalton Barracks,
04:17 Didcot Railway Center,
04:19 and the studios at
04:20 Robin Hood Airfield are making appearance.
04:22 It's gonna be a big budget,
04:26 very visual, very exciting, dramatic affair.
04:29 And I'm very much excited for this one.
04:32 I love Band of Brothers.
04:34 I've not actually seen the Pacific as yet,
04:36 but I'm planning to try and get through that before
04:40 this comes out.
04:43 Yeah, but like not wholly necessary again
04:45 because they're different stories.
04:46 Oh yeah, it's a totally standalone thing, yeah.
04:49 So that's Masters of Air
04:50 and it's going to be out on 26th of January
04:54 on Disney.
04:55 Not on TV.
04:56 Apple TV.
04:57 Why do I always do that?
04:57 I always, I was nearly get it, but not quite.
05:00 Okay, excellent.
05:01 My first suggestion as well
05:04 for something to watch out for
05:06 is also out in January.
05:07 So we're starting well with the stuff
05:09 that's coming around the corner.
05:10 So it's Trigger Point series two.
05:12 Do you recall Trigger Point from earlier this year?
05:15 Yeah, I didn't watch it, but yes.
05:18 So yes, this was ITV drama
05:21 starring Vicki McClure,
05:23 who is usually pretty good in most things.
05:25 She is a bomb disposal expert.
05:30 And it's, I suppose it's novel in the sense
05:33 that we don't always see female bomb disposal experts.
05:36 And that itself is probably what drew me to it
05:40 in the first place.
05:41 But it was quite good in terms of like, you know,
05:45 it can be kind of hard to pull off
05:46 sort of big action dramas on a UK budget sometimes,
05:49 but they did it and they did it quite well.
05:51 So there's a kind of a story running through
05:53 the whole thing rather than just sort of like,
05:57 she's not like solving a different case
05:59 every week or whatever.
06:00 And yeah, the first series,
06:04 it was a six part series and it was actually finished.
06:08 Oh my God, it was last year.
06:09 It wasn't this year, it was 2022, February, 2022.
06:11 But anyway, she, at the end of that, we,
06:16 okay, well, I don't think I'm giving anything away.
06:17 She survived despite there was some serious
06:20 bombings going on, et cetera.
06:23 But ITV put out a press release about what is coming up
06:25 in this next series.
06:28 And they've said in episode one of the second season,
06:30 Lana is just back from secondment training
06:32 Ukrainian bomb disposal teams, very timely,
06:36 but has not returned to active duty.
06:38 She's giving a routine talk to security officers
06:40 from a major, sorry, security officers
06:43 from major financial institutions
06:45 about the issues surrounding bomb center terrorism
06:47 when there is a bomb attack in the heart of the city.
06:50 Lana is closest to the incident,
06:52 but is she ready to take it on?
06:54 I'm guessing she will be.
06:57 Series two could also delve further
06:58 into Vicky's personal life,
06:59 although whether she'll be still be
07:01 with DI Tom Youngblood is another matter.
07:04 They were kind of funny.
07:05 Their relationship was a bit weird in the first one.
07:06 So I have a feeling that's gonna go south.
07:09 And she had a fling as well, but there you go.
07:14 So that's coming in January.
07:17 I think it's the 24th of January to ITV,
07:19 but we'll confirm that in What To Watch
07:21 in the new year as well.
07:22 Okay, back to you.
07:23 - It sounds similar to sort of vigil
07:26 and the sort of semi-procedural,
07:30 but mostly sort of action dramas like that,
07:33 the bodyguard vigil, et cetera.
07:36 - Maybe a little bit more expensive than vigil,
07:41 but yeah, exactly.
07:43 And carried by probably a very strong female lead,
07:47 obviously, as well.
07:48 But yeah, it'll be worth watching, I think.
07:51 So yeah, there you go.
07:53 Right, what is your next recommendation for?
07:55 - It is The Boys season four,
07:59 which is the fourth season of The Boys,
08:02 not including Gen V,
08:03 which was the spinoff that came out this year.
08:06 It takes place after the spinoff,
08:08 but it's basically a direct sequel to season three.
08:11 If you don't like The Boys,
08:15 I can't imagine you're gonna enjoy picking up
08:18 from season four,
08:19 because it's just gonna be more of everything
08:21 that makes The Boys what it is,
08:23 which is sort of mituitous violence.
08:26 Essentially, that's sort of the raison d'etre of the series
08:31 based on the sort of like shock comics of the same name.
08:37 So in the new season,
08:39 Victoria Newman, sort of the big bad
08:43 from the early seasons,
08:45 I'll be come to learn the big bad anywhere,
08:47 aside from Homelander,
08:48 is becoming increasingly closer to the Oval Office,
08:52 but he's under the tight control of Homelander,
08:55 played by Anthony Starr,
08:57 fantastically played by Anthony Starr.
08:59 His greatest role to date, I think,
09:01 as Homelander continues to consolidate his power.
09:06 But with more at stake than ever before,
09:09 The Boys and Butcher need to reunite
09:12 and find a way to collaborate again
09:13 to save the world before Homelander basically
09:16 takes it beyond rescuing.
09:20 We've seen the last season that Homelander's managed
09:24 to get away with some progressively nastier
09:27 and nastier stuff.
09:28 It becomes pretty apparent that he's been
09:30 pretty horrible towards the rest of the seven,
09:34 the other superheroes in the team.
09:36 And we see it in the, either the finale
09:39 or the penultimate episode of Karen,
09:41 which he executes a man,
09:44 just loses his head off for, I think,
09:47 throwing a can at his son.
09:48 - Oh God.
09:50 - And it's sort of like a lefty liberal that has done it.
09:53 And he executes him.
09:55 There's a moment of silence while Homelander's
09:58 basically weighing up whether he's just
10:01 sort of ruined himself.
10:02 And then the crowd starts sort of cheering.
10:05 And it becomes very apparent that it's basically
10:08 a prestige show on the,
10:11 so there's no way, at least yet confirmed,
10:13 but it'll be on Amazon Prime along with the first
10:16 three seasons and Gen V.
10:18 The main cast are gonna return.
10:20 So Carl Urban as Billy Butcher,
10:22 Jack Quaid as Huey, who I think is fantastic as well
10:26 as the awkward newcomer to the world of superheroes.
10:32 Anthony Starr, of course, is back as Homelander.
10:34 Eddie Moriarty as Starlight.
10:37 And Black Noir, the sort of mysterious superhero
10:41 who is killed off in season three,
10:43 played by Nathan Mitchell.
10:46 Mitchell will return as Black Noir II,
10:50 who is a replacement for the superhero.
10:54 - Oh, it's convenient.
10:56 - Yeah, apparently has a very different personality.
10:59 - Very good.
11:00 And have you watched the other series?
11:01 Yeah.
11:03 - Yeah, I watched the first three seasons.
11:05 I watched Gen V.
11:06 Gen V was okay, but didn't really seem necessary.
11:11 I'd rather just have season four of "The Boys" earlier.
11:14 - Okay.
11:15 - I got a little bit tired with season three
11:17 towards the end, just because it just didn't seem
11:21 to progress much further.
11:23 And the finale seems to not really resolve anything.
11:26 I'm hoping that season four will pick it up.
11:30 And it's still hugely popular.
11:32 So I imagine it will go down pretty well with its fan base.
11:35 - So three series are available now,
11:38 and the fourth will be out TBC.
11:40 - Yeah, TBC.
11:43 - Okay, cool.
11:44 We will be back in part two,
11:47 where you're gonna hear some more recommendations
11:48 for 2024 from us.
11:50 Maybe not recommendations,
11:51 maybe just like watch out for these programs.
11:54 (upbeat music)
11:57 Okay, so next up on my list
12:06 is something completely different,
12:08 because I feel like everything we've mentioned so far
12:11 has an element of violence to it, destruction, et cetera.
12:15 So what I'm gonna talk about is,
12:17 and this is the one you've been waiting for, Stephen,
12:19 I can tell, "Bridgerton" season three.
12:22 - Oh, right, okay, I thought it was, yeah.
12:25 - What did you think it was?
12:26 "House of the Dragon"?
12:27 - Well, I won't spoil it, but yeah, okay.
12:29 (laughing)
12:31 - No, I'm afraid it's "Bridgerton" I'm going to talk about,
12:33 which I have to admit, I have really enjoyed.
12:36 I think I enjoyed the first series the most,
12:38 but I enjoyed the second series.
12:39 And I enjoyed the spinoff "Queen Charlotte"
12:41 as well this year.
12:42 There's just something about a bit of a period drama
12:44 that, you know, I just can't resist.
12:46 So this is the third series,
12:49 and this one is gonna focus on a great character
12:52 played by Nicola Coughlin, a fine Irish actress
12:54 you probably know from "Derry Girls."
12:57 And it's her character Penelope Featherington,
13:02 who is, you know, it's her story essentially
13:05 they're following in this series,
13:06 and her crush on Colin Bridgerton, played by Luke Newton.
13:11 So there was a lot about this character
13:17 at the end of series two,
13:19 and now she has been away, or he's been away traveling,
13:24 and Penelope is heartbroken
13:28 after the series finale of season two,
13:31 because she overhears Colin saying to a group of bachelors
13:34 that he would never court her.
13:36 And she falls out with her best friend Eloise as well,
13:39 which isn't good either.
13:39 So she's kind of sad and all that.
13:42 So Nicola Coughlin was talking about it earlier in the year,
13:45 and she was saying that this season,
13:46 Penelope returns to London determined to become a new woman
13:49 with a new independence.
13:50 And apparently in the series,
13:55 she's kind of finally ready to give up on her crush on Colin.
13:58 However, that doesn't mean she's done with love,
14:00 and instead she decides it's time to take a husband,
14:02 and preferably one who will give her the freedom
14:05 to continue her double life as Lady Whistledown,
14:08 far from the prying eyes of her mothers and sisters.
14:12 So yeah, so next thing Colin arrives back,
14:14 and then rather than sort of, you know, look away,
14:19 he's sort of disheartened to realize that Penelope,
14:21 the one person he's always appreciated,
14:22 is giving him this cold shoulder, you know.
14:25 So then he decides what he's gonna do is
14:27 offer to help find her a husband.
14:30 So you can imagine what way this is gonna go.
14:33 But yeah, it should, I'm here for it in every possible way.
14:36 So we've got some new actors, characters coming in
14:40 as well in this series.
14:41 Stay Close husband Daniel Francis
14:43 will play Marcus Anderson,
14:45 a charismatic new entry to the town.
14:48 James Foon has the role of Harry Dankworth,
14:51 who may lack wit, but makes up for it
14:53 with his dashing looks.
14:54 And The Crown's Sam Phillips
14:56 will also appear as Lord Debling.
14:58 So we love a bit of new blood.
14:59 And that's come, I've no idea when, I would say.
15:03 - Can't come soon enough though, can it?
15:05 - Oh, I do, I do know, I do know.
15:07 Can't come soon enough, Stephen.
15:08 Thank you for your enthusiasm there.
15:10 Part one will be premiering on the 16th of May,
15:12 and part two will arrive in June,
15:15 and that's two batches of four episodes.
15:17 - Do you not think it's getting a bit above its station
15:20 when it thinks it's worthy of a split season release?
15:23 It's not The Crown, it's not The Sopranos, I mean.
15:26 - Excuse me, excuse me, baking powder?
15:28 No, no.
15:30 This is Bridgerton.
15:31 Of course you can have it in two batches.
15:33 Oh my God.
15:34 Teasing us and making us wait to see what happens.
15:38 Oh, love it.
15:40 Right, back to you.
15:41 What fresh hell are you going to tell us about now, Stephen?
15:44 - Yeah, we're going back to the sort of gratuitous violence
15:47 with The Gentleman, a spin-off series
15:50 of the Guy Ritchie film of 2019,
15:53 which starred Matthew McConaughey as Michael Pearson.
15:57 Now it's a spin-off, but without, as far as I can tell,
15:59 any of the same characters or cast.
16:01 - So was he a, he was kind of a mad boss, was he?
16:04 - Yes, so he was a big gangster chappy
16:08 who went on a bit of a vendetta
16:10 against some people that tried to double-cross him.
16:13 He was trying to expand his weed empire.
16:15 - Oh yeah.
16:17 - And came into conflict with a few people,
16:20 including that guy from Succession, one of the brothers.
16:24 - Oh, who plays Kendall?
16:27 - I'm going to check now.
16:30 - Oh yes, 'cause you don't know, do you?
16:31 You don't know who's who.
16:32 - Yes, Jeremy Strong is sort of the antagonist
16:37 in the film, the series, totally un-cast.
16:41 You have Theodore James as the lead actor,
16:44 Eddie Halstead, and the connection to the gentleman
16:48 is that Eddie inherits a large estate from his father,
16:52 and is unaware that the estate is actually a front
16:54 for Pearson's drug empire, Pearson being Michael Pearson,
16:57 as played by Matthew McConaughey in the movie.
17:01 So with no experience in crime himself,
17:04 Eddie sort of takes over the operation,
17:07 and he's told if he fails, he will lose the estate
17:10 to his very wealthy father, aristocratic father,
17:15 is hoping to acquit him.
17:17 So this will come onto Netflix in only eight episodes.
17:20 When it does, we don't have a release date,
17:22 but it'll be sometime in 2024.
17:25 - Is Guy Ritchie involved in the production of this series?
17:29 - Yes, I believe he wrote it.
17:32 - Oh.
17:33 Has he done TV stuff before, I wonder?
17:39 - That's a very good question.
17:40 Let's cut this out while I actually look,
17:43 'cause this is the one I wasn't planning.
17:46 So Guy Ritchie wrote an episode, he directed two episodes.
17:51 I assume he sort of oversees it in some capacity.
17:54 - Yeah.
17:55 Being that it's spawned of his work, yeah.
17:59 - Yeah, and he's an exec producer as well.
18:01 I mean, there's like four exec producers,
18:03 but yeah, I assume he sort of has a hand
18:05 on the tiller throughout.
18:08 But he's obviously mostly known for his gangster films.
18:11 - "Lost Stock" and whatnot.
18:13 - "Lost Stock," yeah, "Snatch," which is, I mean, amazing.
18:17 And "The Covenant," which came out this year,
18:19 which I would recommend for those who haven't seen it.
18:23 - Do you know, I've forgotten about "Snatch."
18:24 I feel like I need to watch that again.
18:25 That's hilarious.
18:26 - But interestingly, you speak about Guy Ritchie
18:29 being involved in TV before he,
18:31 there was a "Snatch" TV spinoff, wasn't there,
18:33 with I think Rupert Grint in 2017.
18:36 - Was there?
18:37 - That he was involved in to some extent,
18:39 but yeah, he's mostly a, it's also a lock-stop TV series,
18:43 but yeah, he's mostly known for his films.
18:45 - Okay, okay.
18:46 - Which are mostly pretty good.
18:47 - Yes, absolutely.
18:48 And for being married to Madonna, remember,
18:50 once upon a time?
18:51 - Ah, yes, yes.
18:52 But yeah, "The Gentleman," coming sometime in 2024,
18:55 also starring Kaya Scudillario, Daniel Ings,
19:00 Jolly Richardson, Juan Carlos Esposito,
19:03 from "Breaking Bad," Peter, Sarah Finnewis,
19:06 and Vinnie Jones, long time.
19:09 - Hilarious.
19:10 - Which we call my married top.
19:11 - Yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely.
19:12 Favorite, tough guy.
19:14 Okay, interesting, that is interesting.
19:16 Might be good, might be terrible, might be good, okay.
19:19 - I suspect it may be terrible.
19:21 - It is one of those, isn't it?
19:22 Yeah, sometimes those kind of bad guys, you know,
19:27 I don't know, it's just all been done to death, hasn't it?
19:29 But okay, we will give it a shot though, of course.
19:32 Okay, the final thing I am going to mention
19:35 is "House of the Dragon," out in summer 2024.
19:40 We do not have a date, but a trailer came out
19:44 for it a couple of weeks ago,
19:45 and it revealed that there's no going back
19:48 for Rhaenyra Targaryen, played by Emma Darcy,
19:52 and Elysian Hightower, played by Olivia Cooke.
19:55 Rhaenys, who's played by Eve Best, says in the trailer,
20:00 "There's no war more hateful to the gods
20:02 than a war between kin, and no war so bloody
20:07 as a war between dragons."
20:09 - Wow.
20:11 - What did you think of my performance there?
20:12 Was that all right?
20:13 - That was great, yeah.
20:14 - The exact plot for "House of the Dragon" season two
20:16 is under wraps, but the series showrunner, Ryan Condal,
20:19 told "The Hollywood Reporter"
20:20 that many new characters will appear.
20:23 He said, "We're thrilled to be shooting again
20:24 with members of our original family,
20:26 as well as new talents on both sides of the camera.
20:29 All of your favorite characters will soon be conspiring
20:31 at the council tables, marching with their armies,
20:34 and riding with their dragons into battle.
20:36 We can't wait to share what we have in store."
20:39 Season two will also reportedly introduce us
20:41 to some new winged beasts.
20:43 There will be five new dragons, isn't it?
20:47 I think that's probably the biggest bit of news
20:50 we have this week, yeah.
20:52 - The plot may be under wraps, but I mean,
20:54 I read the book between the two, after the series came out.
20:58 So basically, without giving any spoilers,
21:02 there's gonna be a lot of violence, a lot of,
21:06 I mean, that prophecy about battle between Kin
21:09 and bloody dragons and stuff.
21:10 There'll be a lot of that,
21:12 and they're basically gonna fight on until the bitter end.
21:16 It's not gonna be a sort of peace agreement,
21:19 let's put it that way.
21:19 - I have a feeling, is it gonna go down a similar route
21:22 to like, oh my God.
21:24 - Game of Thrones?
21:27 - Yeah, as in the families and trying to see
21:29 who pledges allegiance to which person
21:31 and the different kingdoms.
21:33 - Basically getting into a proper civil war.
21:36 It's based on, the book itself is based on the Archaic,
21:39 a real English civil war in the 1100s.
21:41 But the series will see a lot of, I think,
21:46 deaths of major characters.
21:50 I don't know how much the show's going on for,
21:52 but a lot of the people in the first season
21:55 are not there at the end of the book,
21:58 or at least into the book that deals with the dance of dragons.
22:01 - It's interesting because I felt early in that first series
22:05 that that was gonna be the way in the first series.
22:07 You know, you just kind of think,
22:09 maybe because they jumped around in time so much.
22:12 I was like, they're not making us like,
22:15 get wedded to any of these characters.
22:18 You know, we should be able to be,
22:20 dispose of them fairly easily, you know, but.
22:23 - Okay, cool.
22:24 Well, that's exciting and interesting.
22:26 I can't remember exactly what we thought
22:28 of that first series.
22:29 - I loved it, I loved it.
22:31 But the general consensus was a little more mixed, I think.
22:35 - Yeah, yeah, yeah.
22:37 I do feel like I would definitely watch it.
22:39 So that's probably quite positive.
22:41 Okay, great.
22:43 Is that everything?
22:44 Have we any more to talk about?
22:45 - No, I'd like to give a shout out to the book as well.
22:48 Fire and Blood is definitely worth a read
22:50 for those who are interested.
22:53 And a dragon lore of Game of Thrones.
22:55 - Yeah, I think I'd like to do that sometime,
22:57 but then I'm like, but I also wanna watch the TV thing.
22:59 And I don't know if I wouldn't get it read before the TV.
23:01 And then I'd have anxiety about not reading it
23:03 and not reading all of it and all of that stuff.
23:05 - There's only about 50 pages in it
23:07 that deal with the TV series, which surprised me.
23:10 - Oh.
23:11 - The series is a chronicle of all of the Targaryen Kings.
23:15 And within that is the Dance of Dragons.
23:18 - Oh, there you go.
23:19 - It's very good, very good.
23:21 - Excellent.
23:21 Well, there's an idea for,
23:22 oh wait, this is kind of after Christmas,
23:24 next Christmas present.
