00:00 Even by Hollywood standards, 2023 was pretty wild. Strikes, scandals, surprises, and smashes.
00:06 There were those who struck it big and those who swung and missed. Plenty of winners and,
00:11 unfortunately, a few losers. So let's take a look at some of Hollywood's biggest success stories
00:16 and most embarrassing missteps of 2023.
00:18 One of the year's biggest winners, arguably the biggest, was none other than Taylor Swift.
00:23 Her blockbuster Heiress tour earned billions, her concert movie broke the mold,
00:28 she became Spotify's most-streamed artist of the year, won a Grammy for directing,
00:32 and was named Time's Person of the Year. Plus, her new romance with Travis Kelce not
00:37 only sent fans swooning, but also boosted NFL ratings. Taylor is definitely winning.
00:41 On the other side of the spectrum, with stumble after stumble this year, was Disney.
00:45 Stock hit lows, Disney+ hit growing pains, the company failed to have a film cross the
00:50 billion-dollar mark, the first time since 2014, pandemic years excluded,
00:54 its major franchises didn't do so great, Marvel fatigue became a real thing,
00:59 and who can forget CEO Bob Iger's comments during the actor's strike that were certainly
01:03 less than well-received. Not a stellar year for the House of Mouse.
01:06 One of the year's biggest wins, definitely the women behind Barbie. It was the biggest
01:10 hit and pop culture sensation of the year. Greta Gerwig became the first female director
01:14 in history to have a title cross the billion-dollar mark. And star Margot Robbie,
01:18 who also produced the film, reportedly made $50 million for her efforts.
01:23 And of course, 2023 was the year Twitter turned to X. And the social platform as we knew it
01:28 changed under Elon Musk's ownership, with disastrous results. U.S. revenue was down
01:33 55% since he took over, and the company not only lost its bluebird icon, but lost plenty of users
01:39 and advertisers along with it. Others who lost this year include Yellowstone with production
01:43 delays, infighting, and Kevin Costner's departure, and the Scream franchise, now left without any
01:48 leading ladies, including Jenna Ortega, who was one of the biggest winners in 2023 after the
01:53 monster success of Wednesday at the end of 2022. Other major victors of 2023 include Netflix,
01:59 with its stock up 60%, Fran Drescher, who successfully led the SAG Strike to a win,
02:04 Christopher Nolan with Oppenheimer, video game adaptations, and of course, TikTok.
