02:18 - I'm thankful to be here tonight,
02:21 and yet there is a bittersweet quality to these gatherings.
02:27 While we are grateful for the light and warmth
02:32 from the bonfires, flames, (speaking in foreign language)
02:36 we are forever reminded of the darkness and the coldness
02:40 that this fire was lead to remedy to.
02:44 Dear youth, (speaking in foreign language)
02:48 many of you are too young to recall the skepticism
02:52 that weighed upon our backs
02:56 when Rwandans made the defiant yet ever self-loving choice
03:00 to revoke hate and embrace unity.
03:05 For some, to speak the truth on the atrocities
03:08 that we have had to overcome is to rehash a past
03:13 and confront an eternal reality
03:15 that they either don't have the capacity
03:17 or the willingness to absorb.
03:20 And for others, denying our past altogether
03:25 is a cowardly escape from guilt over their inaction,
03:30 or worse, their part in keeping genocide ideology existent
03:35 in the most sinister parts of our societies or abroad.
03:40 This is a shame.
03:45 But our united and harmonious country is a beaming new moon
03:49 and an old saying that perhaps you might have heard
03:54 says that the moon does not care for hauling dogs.
03:58 This country or outside of it, we only have one Rwanda
04:03 and this Rwanda belongs to us all.
04:07 As the poet said, we are truly Rwandans.
04:11 I hope that those battling trauma, sadness,
04:15 or even the detractors and everyone in between
04:20 can ask ourselves these enlightening questions.
04:25 What other choice did we ever have?
04:30 Who could condemn a government
04:33 that replaced a discriminatory leadership
04:36 with one of national unity?
04:40 Who could condemn a government
04:42 that employed restorative justice over revenge?
04:46 One that repatriated its people
04:49 used as a shield by a genocide?
04:51 And one that abolished the death penalty
04:56 and a quota system giving access to basic rights
05:00 for all Rwandans?
05:01 The list is not exhaustive.
05:05 We must maintain unwavering faith
05:08 in our choices to stay together,
05:10 be accountable, and think big.
05:12 Do we not deserve to mourn the 10,000
05:16 that were killed every day
05:17 for 100 consecutive days in peace and dignity?
05:21 We must reject any shame for defending our dignity.
05:25 I wish for better Rwanda.
05:29 I pray for better humanity.
05:32 May we all be our sisters and brothers' keepers
05:36 for this Kwebuka 28.
05:39 We are a home of an infinite form
05:42 for the millions of pieces
05:44 making up the whole of Rwanda's soul.
05:46 We could never achieve a miracle
05:49 by forming against that which we are.
05:51 Never.
05:53 And we are never attempting again.
05:56 Despite our story bearing a lesson
06:03 we wish we'd never learned,
06:05 it does link us to rebirth.
06:07 And so we remember on the memory of a before life
06:12 in renewed armor of love
06:15 and loosened awareness of who we truly are.
06:19 Rwandans.
