00:48 What the world needs is to see more of the positive spirit
00:55 of sportsmanship in our politics,
00:59 rather than bringing political divisions into sports.
01:04 That speaks to why Qatar was proud to host the World Cup,
01:15 and Rwanda is honored to host this FIFA Congress.
01:24 We need to keep bad politics out of sports,
01:30 as we saw last year in the constant hypocritical
01:37 criticism at the World Cup last year.
01:49 Instead of asking, why is it being held there, first ask,
01:58 why not?
02:02 Unless we are talking about a kind of entitlement
02:07 that only some of us on this globe deserve to enjoy.
02:16 It's about keeping some people in their place.
02:21 But that kind of attitude should have been left far behind
02:27 in history by now.
02:30 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:33 When I was campaigning to become FIFA president,
02:42 Rwanda hosted the SHUN, the African Nations Championship.
02:48 And I came full of hope twice to Rwanda.
02:51 First for the opening game, where I met
02:54 many African associations.
02:58 And then I came back for the final game.
03:01 First time I came, I was full of energy and full of hope.
03:07 And the second time I came, I was told, well, you know,
03:13 we all love you.
03:15 But actually, we're not going to support you in the election.
03:20 So of course, I was pretty depressed, about to give up.
03:25 I had already packed.
03:27 And suddenly-- and I don't even know a president,
03:29 if you know that--
03:30 suddenly, somebody came to see me.
03:34 And he gave me a ticket for the match of the final,
03:37 because I had no ticket for the final match.
03:41 By the way, the DRC won.
03:45 And he told me, this is a ticket offered to you
03:48 by President Paul Kagame.
03:54 And then I decided, I thought about it.
03:57 And I remembered my visit to the memorial.
04:01 And you should go all to visit the memorial, all of you.
04:04 And I said, who I am to give up?
04:10 What this country has suffered, and how this country came back
04:18 up, is inspiring for the entire world, dear president.
04:24 So I certainly couldn't give up, because somebody
04:27 was telling me something.
04:29 I stayed.
04:29 I attended the match.
04:31 I continued to campaign.
04:34 I was elected FIFA president a few months later.
04:37 But most importantly, I witnessed
04:42 how this country flourished.
04:46 And this country flourished with nothing,
04:49 starting from nothing, with hope, with compassion,
04:59 with commitment, with hard work, and with leadership.
05:06 And today, this is a beautiful country.
05:07 And I'm sure that everyone here will come back
05:10 with their friends and their families
05:12 to visit not only Kigali, but also the rural areas,
05:17 the gorillas, and all the beauties
05:20 that you can see here, and in the neighboring countries,
05:24 of course, of this beautiful continent, which is Africa.
05:27 If the delegates of this Congress are in agreement,
05:39 we will now proceed to the election
05:41 of the incoming FIFA president for the 2023-2027 term
05:47 of office by acclamation.
05:51 I'm now calling on the Congress to give a round of applause
05:56 to elect Gianni Infantino as the FIFA president for the period
06:01 from 2023 to 2027.
06:07 [APPLAUSE]

06:17 Mr. Infantino is thus elected the FIFA president
06:21 for a second term of office for the period from 2023 to 2027.
06:29 Congratulations, Mr. Infantino.
