NECA The Thing McCready Last Stand Figure
Transcript
00:00 Why don't we just wait here a little while, see what happens.
00:03 Here's a look at the new NECA toys, the thing Ultimate Macready last stand.
00:09 [music]
00:38 In the winter of 1982, a 12-man research team in a remote Antarctic research station discovers
00:43 an alien buried in the snow for over 100,000 years.
00:47 Once in frozen, the form-changing alien wreaks havoc, creates terror and becomes one of them.
00:52 While Macready chats it up with childs, let's grab the tape measure and see how tall the
00:55 figure stands.
00:57 Last stand Macready is actually about 7 inches in height.
01:01 Actually to be exact, he's about 6 3/4 of an inch in height.
01:04 Or the figure is going to be about 17 centimeters tall.
01:08 A big thank you to the folks over at NECA toys that did provide this sample of Last
01:11 Stand Macready that we can have a look at this review, marking now the third Macready
01:14 figure that the company has released.
01:16 The first one being Outpost 31 and shortly right after that we also got ourselves Station
01:20 Survival Macready.
01:22 Using a lot of the same mold elements, you can see like the lower legs and boots for
01:25 example are the still same.
01:26 The jacket also is something that's shared, although with the newer one, the Last Stand
01:30 release, he does have strapped on to the front of his torso some sticks of dynamite.
01:35 And while yes, still using the same body, to the credit least of NECA, each one of the
01:39 Macreadys have all come included with their own respected accessories.
01:43 My favorite really being Station Survival because not only did it have the blood test,
01:47 but it also as well came included with the flame torch.
01:49 The flamethrower is not though included with this release, but you do get yourself some
01:52 Molotov cocktails.
01:54 You get actually several of these.
01:56 Just picking up the bottles, these will be the first things that we actually have a look
01:58 at.
01:59 You get four of them already that have the rags installed.
02:03 I'm sure you're going to see probably not something you'd be wanting drinking inside
02:06 unless you're going to be offering up the drink to Charles.
02:08 Oh, I was suspected that Charles was really the thing in the end of the movie.
02:11 Do you agree with that?
02:12 Let me know down below in the comment section.
02:14 But the Molotov cocktails seem to have rags of various lengths.
02:19 These are all softer plastic, so you want to be a little bit careful that they don't
02:22 rip in the process.
02:23 But while he does come included with four of these, he comes with one bottle that doesn't
02:27 actually have the rag inside.
02:29 And though while for a second I thought this may have been the drink that he offers up
02:31 Charles at the end, I think the bottle was a little bit different.
02:34 The label also was something that was on the front of the bottle.
02:36 This is just basically a glass bottle.
02:38 All of these though, by the way, can be stored on the figure.
02:41 I guess before we do that, he has also one other one too.
02:44 And this again is not one that we'll want to be drinking, but when lit, can cause some
02:48 quite destructive measures.
02:50 Now again, all of these can be stored on the figure.
02:53 You're just going to move the figure around.
02:54 I say all of these, really technically you only get three slots.
02:57 Two slots are for more of the regular bottles.
03:00 You can actually take the ones that have the rags, those slide in.
03:05 Try to get them as far down as really you can.
03:08 And the other side, and then you get the one section on the back here that basically stores
03:11 the rectangular bottle.
03:13 And that just fits also into the pouch.
03:15 Unfortunately though, by adding these things, it does cause then problems when it comes
03:18 to rotating this figure's arms.
03:20 You can kind of kind of tuck this in and just kind of bring his arm around.
03:24 But the problem is always like when these bottles are in place, this one arm is always
03:28 going to have a tough time trying to move around.
03:31 And we'll just actually put him down here for right now.
03:34 One of the other accessories that come in clear with the figure is about the only accessory
03:37 that I can see that was part of another release of MacReady.
03:40 It's actually his handgun.
03:42 I believe it was Station Survival.
03:43 I'm going to bring back in that gun so you guys can see.
03:46 It looks to be identical to one another and has been equally painted.
03:50 Although I will say though, the handle of the newer Last Stand has notably more brown
03:54 to it.
03:55 And the one that we got before from Station Survival, unless I've got these flipped around,
03:59 has a more lighter brown.
04:00 Other than that though, it seems to be the exact same old.
04:02 That seems to be the only thing that is shared with this MacReady with all the others.
04:06 The other two have all been respectively come included with their own weapons.
04:10 For example, the shotguns.
04:11 This guy doesn't come in really included with any other thing, like I said, other than his
04:14 gun.
04:15 The gun also can be stored on the figure's body.
04:18 Located on the side here, you have a holster.
04:19 You just have to unstrap the holster, unpeg it, and then once... actually you don't even
04:26 need to unstrap it.
04:28 Unstrapping it would definitely break it.
04:29 You don't want to do that.
04:30 This basically just houses on the side of the holster and you have the figure displayed
04:34 with that.
04:35 Yes, don't rip that, whatever you do.
04:37 The figure also comes included with, I guess technically, one thing he was also coming
04:41 included with that I think the other figures also had as well, is the same swappable hands.
04:45 Right now he has gloved hands.
04:47 If you did want to display him though with regular skin hands... skin hands?
04:51 That sounds strange to describe it like that.
04:53 But he also has one for holding the gun.
04:55 He has one for holding the torch.
04:56 And then he also has one as well for, again, holding the gun.
04:59 It's just the mirror flipped to it on the opposite side.
05:02 Changing out the hands, it's just a case of taking the hand right now and just removing
05:06 it.
05:07 And then also as well, you're going to want to make sure that you remove this part, because
05:09 of course that's part of the glove.
05:11 It wouldn't make any sense if he's taking off his gloves and he leaves still the part
05:14 that's on top of his forearm.
05:16 So we're just going to go ahead and remove these right now.
05:18 I think for me, I'm going to probably display...
05:20 Yeah, I think we're going to be displaying him really with the gloves, especially if
05:23 I plan to have him in a scene more outside.
05:27 He's definitely going to want to keep his hands warm.
05:29 The figure also comes included with his hat.
05:31 And in all the cases, we've gotten the same hat.
05:33 So again, I'm kind of backpedaling a bit by saying it was the only one accessory he came
05:37 included with.
05:38 This is also one of the other hats that he came included with.
05:40 I think this one was with Station Survival.
05:41 It might have very well have been the original Outpost 31 McCready, but it is the exact same
05:47 hat.
05:48 The only thing that's really different is that they frosted now white on the top and
05:51 they frosted white on the sides to make it look like he's been outside.
05:54 That seems to be the only thing.
05:55 And you know, again, it straps the exact same way either on his head or again, you can have
05:59 it just, you know, again, behind his head if you wanted to have the figure displayed
06:02 that way.
06:03 Some other things that the figure comes also included with involves me reporting some sad
06:07 news.
06:08 He comes included with a lantern.
06:10 That's not necessarily the sad news, by the way, it's not the same lantern that came included
06:13 with this one.
06:14 I think this is the Station Survival lantern.
06:16 A little bit bigger this time around.
06:18 Unfortunately though, while this one does have the handle, this handle is MIA.
06:23 Maybe the handle is the thing.
06:24 I don't know.
06:25 Has anybody seen the handle lately?
06:27 Has anybody been talking to the handle lately?
06:29 Okay, nobody.
06:31 Unfortunately though, while I was taking this out of the tray, the handle part of this is
06:36 somewhere on the floor.
06:38 I'm gonna have to go looking for it afterwards.
06:40 It's the only thing unfortunately that is now missing on this, but it's a really overall
06:43 nice looking lantern.
06:46 Normally he would have had the means to just kind of carry it around with him, but unfortunately
06:49 he can't just because again, like the handle, it's somewhere, it's somewhere.
06:52 Who has been talking to the handle?
06:54 Wait, wait, there's a guy sneaking out right now.
06:56 Everybody stop him.
06:57 I think he might be in on this as well.
07:00 The figure does also come included with a flare.
07:02 The flare has already been lit and you can see it's omitting a smoke.
07:06 It's kind of more kind of a, I guess, like a white color down below where they've painted
07:10 it, but it leaves off a trail behind of more of a frosted pink.
07:15 On the end, there's a little bit more of a translucency to it, but it's a really nice
07:18 little flare display with a figure.
07:20 He also as well comes included with a detonator.
07:23 The detonator looks to be made of wood.
07:25 It has a little handle to it.
07:26 It's nicely been painted, but it also has as well, would you call this the plunger?
07:32 I don't know enough about detonating things.
07:34 Thank goodness for that.
07:35 But he has the little, of course, the draw part up that you would then push down to make
07:38 things go bluey or blowy.
07:40 So it comes included with that.
07:42 And then the last thing that the figure also comes included with as well is his alternate
07:46 head sculpt.
07:47 Now I did think that one point this was going to be the same head sculpt that we got with
07:51 the station survival MacReady, but in fact, bringing in the two heads, you can see it
07:55 is in fact a different head sculpt.
07:58 This did have visible teeth, sure, but it didn't have more of the angrier expression
08:02 that comes included now with the last stand MacReady.
08:06 Hair is about the sculpted the same.
08:08 I mean, if you really also wanted to, you could just pop the head off this one.
08:11 You could replace it with this one also as well, or hey, why not?
08:14 Because they seem to be using all the same ball joints.
08:16 If again, you wanted just to use it with the original MacReady, just pop the head in place
08:20 and you just use it with that head sculpt as well.
08:24 One of the really the benefits of the fact that NECA is using the bodies again means
08:27 that I'm just not knocking things off.
08:29 It does mean though that you can easily then swap the heads out.
08:32 I do think that it's one of the better looking heads that we've gotten from MacReady.
08:35 There's a better likeness to Kurt Russell.
08:37 It's missing a little bit.
08:39 It's missing a little bit, but I will say though, like between that and the last stand
08:42 or the station survival MacReady, I'm even getting tongue twisted thinking about it.
08:47 Between the two, I think these are the two best head sculpts that we've gotten.
08:49 If of course, that's the route that you wanted to go.
08:52 Now he has as of right now, I'm just going to move his arm out of the way so we can get
08:56 these Molotov cocktails out of there just because I know they're going to be wreaking
09:00 havoc.
09:01 Let's just pull that one out.
09:03 Oh, did I actually?
09:04 Oh, I think I did.
09:05 I'm going to have to glue that one back in place.
09:07 I did already mention, unfortunately with these, they're very loosely attached onto
09:11 the end of it.
09:12 At least I've got some extra Molotovs to work with, but boy, that's a bit of a bummer.
09:15 We'll just put that to the side and carefully, carefully removing this one.
09:20 With having this as far down as it is, you really want to be careful, especially this
09:24 the circular ones, because there's really less to hold on to.
09:27 Be careful when it comes to removing those.
09:29 Now he has one other thing and that is of course the hooded head sculpt.
09:32 To bring back then the other ones that we did get from before, the Outpost 31 Macready
09:36 had this head sculpt and it also had, if I can grab it, it also had this head sculpt
09:41 here as well.
09:42 It doesn't look to be the same.
09:44 I thought maybe as well, it could have been the same one that was used for station survival
09:47 and it isn't.
09:49 So it seems to be that they are using different heads once again.
09:52 If you do prefer to have your Macready displayed with the hood, again, just to bring back in
09:56 the other two head sculpts, if I can actually hold on to both here, grab the arm, grab the
10:01 arm.
10:02 There we go.
10:03 There's the three hooded heads and the only other one that we don't have here because
10:06 I don't have enough hands is the one that actually has the closed mouth that came included
10:09 with the Outpost 31.
10:11 So again, it looks to be the case that they are using different heads for the Macready's
10:14 release.
10:15 So not using really anything again when it comes to the heads.
10:18 Now for the hats, going back to the hat, you can have it displayed on his existing head.
10:23 You want to do it in such a way, of course, that the little strings that he has isn't
10:26 going to be blocking the front of his face.
10:28 You can also put that down like this, or also if you want to, like in the movie, you can
10:33 also have it running down the back of his head.
10:35 Although honestly, it works a little bit better with the unhelmeted or the unhooded head.
10:39 If you want to have the figure displayed with the hat on the back of his head instead.
10:44 Cutting out the heads, I'm just going to go ahead and remove the one that we have right
10:47 now.
10:48 There we go.
10:49 And we're just going to replace it with the defaulted or the alternate head sculpt.
10:53 Just going to make sure that's snapped all the way in there.
10:55 And I guess also if you wanted to, just take that off for right now, put the hat back there,
10:59 and then we'll just snap the head just on top of the ball joint.
11:03 So now he's got the hat displayed on the back of the figure's body.
11:06 I really like this head sculpt.
11:08 Again, I don't know if it really lands perfectly, a likeness to Kurt Russell, but you know,
11:12 it's pretty good for the size of the figure.
11:14 Now with this one also as well is the fact that he does have the additional now dynamite
11:18 strapped on the front of his body.
11:21 It does add a lot more and definitely does differentiate this one from the other two
11:24 MacReady's, but it does again cause problems when it comes to rotating the figure's arms.
11:28 Not as much on this side, but definitely on this side here.
11:30 One thing I did also want to say before we actually move on to the rest of the figure's
11:33 body is I do wish that, and we have yet to really get this one with any of the MacReady's,
11:38 whether it be this one, whether it be the Station Survival, or just before that, of
11:42 course, the Outpost 31.
11:44 One thing is consistent with all of these is yet they have yet to really frost the beard.
11:50 I did quote at the beginning of this review, I did quote the end of the film.
11:54 I mean, in the end, we have more of a frostbitten MacReady that has like, again, the snow all
11:58 over his beard, all over his hair.
12:00 At some point, I would really have loved if we could have gotten that version of MacReady,
12:03 where again, like you could call it frostbitten MacReady.
12:06 I mean, really, by calling this Last Stand, and by even in the fact that they are using
12:10 an image on the front of the box of more frostbitten MacReady, I really wish that this figure could
12:15 have also had some additional white frost on the front of his face, at least in the
12:18 beard area, and also in his hair.
12:20 Even really, they could have also added it onto his jacket.
12:22 I mean, if you were to say, look at this one, and then you look at Station Survival, there
12:27 really isn't a lot of difference.
12:28 I mean, there's a little bit of additional, I would almost even want to say it's a lighter
12:32 white that they've kind of brushed onto it, but not nearly to the point where I really
12:35 feel like this guy's been outside for a while.
12:38 This is one thing I really wish that the figure could have possibly had.
12:40 Now, when it comes to his legs, I'm just going to bring back in his, the original previous
12:45 MacReady to show you that the harness seems to be the same as well as the holster on the
12:48 side.
12:49 One thing though is different is the coloring of the brown that they went with.
12:52 This is more kind of a chestnut brown.
12:54 The original MacReady to that was actually more of a lighter brown, and even the MacReady
12:58 before that was actually missing a gun altogether.
13:00 The Station, the Outpost 31 MacReady never had an actual gun wrapped or belt wrapped
13:05 around his torso.
13:07 The lower end of his legs do have a little bit of additional kind of scuff to it, adding
13:11 some white.
13:12 But again, like just had carried over this to the rest of the figure's body, I think
13:15 that really would have sold this even further as being a last stand MacReady.
13:18 Okay, so let's look through the figure's articulation.
13:21 For this, I'm actually going to just remove the head for right now because I did want
13:24 to take the hat off just in case I actually snag it in the process.
13:27 I've already broken one thing, let's not break anything else.
13:29 For the figure's articulation, MacReady is going to have a ball joint, so the head
13:32 rotates back and forth.
13:34 It looks up, but by looking it up as far as I just did, usually then divorces the head
13:39 from the rest of the neck.
13:40 So you want to make sure that, you know, again, you bring the head back, but not too far.
13:44 You have the head looking down also as well.
13:45 You can rock it back and forth, but you know, again, like rocking it back and forth, unless
13:49 you really have the head all the way on there, is usually prone to popping the head off the
13:53 ball joint.
13:54 As for the arms, the arms come out at 90 degrees, I think it would be safe to say, a little
13:58 less than maybe 90 degrees.
14:00 You can take the arms and normally, normally this would be the time I would say that you'd
14:03 be able to rotate them all the way around.
14:05 And for the most part, you can, you just want to make sure that you're not hitting the dynamite.
14:09 Not figuratively, figuratively, I guess literally would be still, you'd still be banging it
14:13 on the front.
14:14 Just don't light it, whatever you do.
14:15 But yeah, they do rotate all the way around.
14:17 The figure does have a single hinge only in his elbow.
14:20 It allows at least the forearm to rotate back and forth and the hands rotate all the way
14:23 around.
14:24 I mean, again, if you have already the two MacReady's, you're pretty much treated to
14:27 the same level of posability when it comes to this release.
14:30 He has an upper torso ball joint.
14:32 There goes the head.
14:33 He has an upper torso ball joint.
14:35 The legs do split out.
14:36 Just be careful of the holster on the side.
14:38 They are ball joints, once again, inside the thighs.
14:40 You can take the legs and move them forward.
14:42 You can move them back.
14:43 A swivel at the top of the thigh, single hinge on the knee.
14:46 It allows at least the lower leg to rotate.
14:48 And up and down motion, not only on the ankle this way, but you can also, of course, like
14:52 the other two MacReady's, you can also move the ankle this way as well.
14:56 So again, like it is the third MacReady that we have gotten.
14:59 And I think once again, we're getting a MacReady that at least gets new articulation, well,
15:03 new accessories.
15:04 The articulation is going to be exactly the same.
15:07 Bring in the other two MacReady's, Outpost 31 and Station Survival.
15:11 To really then look at them, there is a little bit of the white that has been added.
15:14 I mean, to compare really just the jackets alone, you can see that NECA did go in there
15:18 to their credit and add a little bit of white to say like his jacket and a little area to
15:23 his pants.
15:24 But I wish they had also carried that trend also over to his head sculpt.
15:28 Because again, like if he's last stand MacReady and looking and judging by the image on the
15:32 front of the box, this guy's outside, this guy is literally, it's his last stand.
15:36 I really feel like he should have been frosted up a lot more than what he is.
15:39 Maybe you never know.
15:40 We may be getting another release of NECA releasing a MacReady down the road that is
15:44 going to be completely frostbitten MacReady.
15:46 I'd still pick him up because the likelihood with the case of the other two MacReady's
15:50 we've already had a look at.
15:51 It's one of the releases that NECA has done, even though they are using the same mold,
15:55 they've thrown in different accessories every single time.
15:58 Well, I have been asking around if anybody had any conversations with the lantern handle
16:02 and Blair City was talking to it earlier, but I don't know.
16:05 Blair seems strange lately.
16:08 While I am looking though still for the handle and final looks, I've got the figure displayed
16:11 here with one of the Molotov cocktails in one hand and the flare to ignite it with the
16:15 other.
16:16 Now I don't have right now the other Molotov cocktails stored in the side holsters that
16:20 come included with them, just because again, in order to get the arms to move forward like
16:24 this, unfortunately those bottles do kind of get in the way of things.
16:27 And as you saw in this review, if you have the bottle too far down into the holster,
16:31 trying to remove it may be difficult without ripping one of the rags in the process.
16:35 At least I've got extras to work with.
16:37 And while yes, it is still the same MacReady that we've gotten before, the lower legs are
16:42 still the same, the boots and the arms.
16:44 They have at least changed the torso.
16:46 There's enough at least changes made by NECA's part to at least feel like when you're picking
16:50 this one up, it's not just a carbon copy, which is ironic for me to be saying it, talking
16:53 about Blair and talking about the thing.
16:55 It's not just a carbon copy to the other two Outpost 31 and Station Survival MacReady that
17:00 we did get.
17:01 They're close enough, but they're not quite.
17:03 Still though, at some point, the one missed opportunity is not by frosting this guy a
17:07 lot more than what he is.
17:08 I think again, they probably should have added a lot more white to his beard, a lot more
17:12 to his hair.
17:13 They have added and teased some of it on his hat, on his legs, and of course on his jacket,
17:18 but I would have upped the ante with the level of snow that settled on MacReady's body.
17:22 Big thank you once again to the folks over at NECA Toys that did come through and provide
17:25 the sample of the last Stan MacReady that we can have a look at this review.
17:30 Even though this is marking the third time we've gotten a MacReady figure, this is now
17:33 marking the fifth time we've gotten ourselves a thing character as a figure release.
17:37 And while that may seem like a math problem, we also did get ourselves a San Diego Comic
17:41 Con.
17:42 I think it was a San Diego Comic Con.
17:43 That was the Parker poster figure, the one that of course has the blare of light that's
17:48 coming from the middle of his face.
17:50 I'd love at some point, I know that one's going for crazy stupid money, I'd love to
17:53 get my hands on that one at some point.
17:54 And of course it's recently released, NECA has done also the Thing Dog.
17:58 Definitely looking forward to getting my hands on that, and I hope that's the start of getting
18:02 more Thing monsters.
18:03 I talked a little bit earlier about Blair, I'd love to get a Blair monster.
18:06 I think there's a lot of opportunities still for NECA to release Thing characters, and
18:10 to not just always be MacReady.
18:12 But what do you guys think of the figure?
18:13 Let me know down below in the comment section.
18:14 Have you had the chance to get the last Stan MacReady, and how do you have the figure displayed?
18:19 Also as well, hey, hey now, if you guys enjoyed this video, I want to hit it with a like.
18:22 If you guys are loving the content you guys are seeing, and you'd like to stick around
18:25 for more, I can tell you one thing, we are going to be looking at some more NECA reviews.
18:29 That's the kind of thing that brings all the boys to the yard.
18:30 I'd like to think you're coming back to other things as well, but specifically, specifically,
18:34 if NECA is the thing that you like to come and watch the reviews for the most, just know
18:38 we're going to be doing a lot more of that in the upcoming videos.
18:41 And of course, as always guys, thanks for watching.
18:43 See you guys next time.
