00:00 Well, Manny Pacquiao rang in the New Year in Japan when he teased a possible rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr.
00:07 Nine years on after their mega fight back in 2015. The question is, is Mayweather Pacquiao II
00:14 still worth the watch or the hype? Let's find out. Joining us to go all out on this story is veteran boxing analyst
00:22 attorney Ed Tolentino. Joining us via Zoom, attorney Ed, January 2, 2024.
00:28 Happy New Year to you.
00:30 Happy New Year, Andre, and to all dear televiewers.
00:35 Attorney, it's 2024 already. We were still talking about Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a possible rematch.
00:45 It took years before their mega fight materialized back in 2015. That was nine years ago now.
00:53 Since it is 2024, since then, there's been a lot of talks about whether Manny and Floyd will have a rematch.
01:02 And now, 2024, January 2, we're talking about a possible rematch between arguably two of the best boxers in the world in history.
01:14 My question to you is, what do you think? Will Mayweather Pacquiao II be a winner in 2024? Yes or no?
01:23 La larga for one reason.
01:26 Okay.
01:27 Because the first fight in 2015 generated revenues in excess of $600 million.
01:35 Wow.
01:36 If you can get around 40-50% of that revenue in a rematch, that's big money.
01:41 But let's admit it, Andre, there is no demand for a second match between Pacquiao and Mayweather because the first fight in 2015,
01:49 which also happened several years late, was a huge disappointment.
01:54 It was a boring fight.
01:55 And now you're talking about a rematch nine years later when both fighters are in their twilight years, way past their prime.
02:04 So what could be the incentive here?
02:06 If it's an exhibition match, it will not be reflected in the records of the boxers.
02:11 I don't think Mayweather will risk his unbeaten record in a real fight with Manny Pacquiao.
02:16 So most likely it's an exhibition match.
02:19 There is nothing to gain here.
02:20 There is no world title at stake.
02:21 But like I said, the first fight generated around $600 million in revenue.
02:26 That is the reason why this rematch is happening.
02:30 Well, attorney, we have yet to get the picture of Floyd Mayweather Jr. here in 2024.
02:37 But this former Senator Manny Pacquiao, Pacman, who is in Japan, I actually messaged him earlier asking him if he can be on the show.
02:45 And he said, "Andre, I'm still in Japan."
02:48 So okay.
02:49 But he has a lot of plans for this year.
02:52 He has a lot of fights scheduled.
02:56 Well, aside from this rematch that he did mention in Japan that he teased,
03:01 there's also this exhibition match against a Muay Thai legend, Buakaw.
03:07 And then apparently, there's been talks that Manny Pacquiao wants to represent the Philippines in the Paris Olympics.
03:15 My question now is, can Pacman do all of that in one year?
03:23 Floyd Pacquiao 2 against Buakaw and a possibility that Manny will be in the Paris Olympics.
03:32 You know, for all retired boxers, he has the most fights he wants.
03:38 We said that he has a lot of fights he wants. Maybe later, in the end, he won't be able to fight.
03:44 He has to set his priorities.
03:46 I think Mayweather takes precedence because of the history he has with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
03:51 Buakaw is there, available, the Muay Thai kickboxer.
03:55 And then there's also the Olympics, wherein he's seeking an age exemption and universality place slot to qualify.
04:03 He has a lot of things he wants to do for somebody who's already 45 years old.
04:08 There are high risks involved in this matchup but for me, it's safe if Mayweather is just an exhibition,
04:14 if Buakaw is just an exhibition, it's safe,
04:17 compared to how he's been catching up with Terrence Crawford, Gervonta Tank-Davis, who was also mentioned last year by Manny Pacquiao as potential opponent.
04:25 So it's more dangerous because they are active boxers.
04:28 This is just an exhibition.
04:30 But the Olympics also will be very demanding and punishing because your opponents are young and the schedule of the Olympics is different.
04:39 You will fight several times, you will weigh in several times.
04:42 So that's a very, very tough endeavor, the Olympics.
04:46 Although he wants to give the first Olympic gold medal in boxing to our country.
04:51 That's his motivation.
04:53 Attorney, this potential rematch, let's start with Pacquiao vs. Mayweather, will their legacy be affected?
05:00 You said that they're way past their primes.
05:03 Will it affect? How will it affect their legacies?
05:07 For sure, it will still generate audience, this mega fight, right?
05:13 Well, as some people believe, Manny won that first fight against Mayweather.
05:19 Do you think it will affect any of their legacies, Floyd and Manny?
05:24 Well, if it is only an exhibition bout, definitely it will have no effect on their legacies
05:30 because an exhibition fight will not be officially reflected in the records of the boxers.
05:36 Now if it's a real fight, then the legacy will be affected if Mayweather loses because his record is unbeaten.
05:44 That's his biggest legacy, that I retired in the fight game undefeated.
05:50 So if Pacquiao wins, it's not significant because there's no world title at stake.
05:55 But for Mayweather, it will have a big impact because his record will be judged, how long he will fight to be squeaky clean.
06:03 That, to my mind, will be the effect on Floyd Mayweather.
06:06 Pacquiao has nothing to lose in this match, in my opinion, but he will generate a lot of money for this fight.
06:12 But like I said, the legacies are basically intact.
06:15 It's only Mayweather who is at risk, but only if he risks his unbeaten record in an official fight.
06:22 I don't think he will risk that. I think he will settle for an exhibition fight.
06:26 So that Mayweather's record is still unblemished.
06:29 Yes, to play safe.
06:31 If you were Manny Pacquiao, I'll ask you, "Attorney, what will you choose?"
06:42 If you were going to give Manny Pacquiao your two cents, your advice,
06:50 will you fight Mayweather again this year?
06:53 Or will you jump right into the Olympics? What will you choose, attorney?
06:58 Given his age, 45, he hasn't fought for a long time.
07:03 Fight your fellow fighters who are old and who are not fighting anymore.
07:07 That's safer. There are a lot of risks in the Olympics.
07:10 First of all, you have to go to qualifying tournaments.
07:13 You will be asked for an age exemption.
07:15 And the Olympics, for those kids, give it to those kids.
07:19 Because it's very punishing.
07:21 For Mayweather, you will see him grow up.
07:24 There is no guaranteed first place in the Olympics.
07:26 In the Olympics, you will see Mayweather at less risk.
07:30 Because your opponent is the same age, same bracket, as we said.
07:34 So it's a safer route for Manny Pacquiao.
07:37 Because obviously he still wants to fight, but I think you have to choose your battles.
07:41 I think Mayweather is the safest.
07:43 The Olympics will be very dangerous.
07:45 Make no mistake, it's not going to be a walk in the park,
07:48 given his age and the younger boxers who will be taking part in the Olympics.
07:52 Speaking of younger boxers, we will put the spotlight on our younger boxers when we return, Atty.
07:58 Marlon Tapales and Ymir Marcial.
08:00 But before we have a quick break, give me a name.
08:03 If it's not Mayweather, you said he's the same age, because the Olympics is for kids.
08:07 Who do you think Manny should fight here in 2024?
08:12 Just one name, Atty.
08:14 Me, Big Manny Fight, Conor McGregor, he'll continue.
08:19 Okay. Conor McGregor will continue.
08:22 Well, stay there, Atty. We'll take a really quick timeout.
08:26 But when we return, as I said, we will put the spotlight on our young boxers,
08:31 Ymir Marcial and Marlon Tapales with boxing analyst Atty. Ed Palentino.
