Kyle Shanahan explains why San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy will not play against the Los Angeles Rams.
Transcript
00:00 >> Kyle, do you plan on playing Brock Purdy against the Rams?
00:03 >> No, Brock's the only guy for sure, no, I don't plan on playing.
00:05 >> What went into that decision?
00:09 >> One, you can only rest seven guys if nobody's hurt.
00:17 If you get two practice squad guys up, we have at least six guys injured right now.
00:21 So there's only, I don't know for sure we can rest one and
00:24 someone with our starting quarterback.
00:26 >> Any thought to play Brandon Allen as well as James Arnold?
00:29 >> Not right now, I mean, he'll be ready, he'll get some work in the week, but
00:33 I'm going like a Sam right now.
00:35 >> Chemistry wise, is this a tricky thing because you've got a bunch of guys,
00:40 you can't rest everybody, as you said, and some guys have injuries,
00:45 some guys don't, some guys are more important to your plan.
00:50 How do you negotiate that and handle it so you don't have bad feelings in your room?
00:55 >> You explain to everyone that it's not an option, and
00:58 you explain to them why so they get that.
01:00 And it's pretty easy to understand when you gotta dress 48 people so
01:03 you only can pick five, and you have more than five guys injured.
01:07 So the guys who are injured are already not playing.
01:10 So how many other guys you get to pick?
01:12 I can pick two up from practice squad, but that's all.
01:15 So unless we start cutting a bunch of players, there's no other option.
01:19 So guys gotta be in uniform, they gotta be ready to go.
01:22 It's nice with Brock because he can still be in a uniform and
01:25 not count because he can be the third quarterback, which that happened.
01:29 We'll decide whether to put him in uniform or not so
01:31 you can go in and hand it off if that happened.
01:32 But you just gotta explain it to the guys.
01:35 And also, you work hard to get an off week in this league.
01:43 I think off week helps a lot of people, especially if you handle it the right way
01:46 and stuff, and just this time of year, it allows guys to get a little fresher and
01:50 stuff, which you don't want is two off weeks.
01:53 No one gets two by weeks, and we earned ours next week.
01:56 We just didn't know we were gonna do it already.
01:58 So we gotta make sure we get something out of this week.
02:00 And we've been in this situation before where we earned it by week, it was in 2019.
02:05 But we didn't know we earned that until about 8.30 at night on the last play of
02:08 the game versus Seattle.
02:10 It was the first time it hit us.
02:12 When the play before that, we might have been playing that Saturday.
02:14 So we were very thankful we earned it at, we need that rest and
02:17 we got it that week.
02:20 Yes, we're in that situation, but we already know we're there.
02:23 And so that's why guys, mine's gotta be right this week.
02:26 Two by weeks isn't good for anybody.
02:28 And that's why this isn't one.
02:30 And I know all these questions, those are things you first think of, I do.
02:34 Cuz I didn't expect to know this Sunday night, coming back on the plane.
02:37 But once you do sit and the reality hits and you think about it,
02:40 you look at how a 53-man roster works with 48 guys and
02:44 only allowed two practice squad flexes.
02:46 You realize one, it's impossible, but two,
02:49 it's also not the best thing for the team.
02:51 >> Which are you more willing to live with?
02:54 The chance that someone could get hurt who's very important to you or
02:57 the possibility that your team would be too rusty and not ready for that first game?
03:03 >> It's not about the rusty, it's about one, how you pull off a game.
03:08 Rusty isn't always about the game, rusty is how you treat the week.
03:11 And the game is how you treat the week.
03:15 It's games three and a half hours of to me what unfolded throughout the week and
03:19 then you just get to cut it loose.
03:20 So that you gotta play accordingly,
03:21 you gotta watch how the game's going and be as smart as you can.
03:24 I also think people win in playoff games cuz you're a team.
03:30 And yes, good players put you over the hump and everything.
03:33 But you wanna rest a good player, go watch what happens to all the other role players.
03:37 You lose your whole role players before you go to a playoff and
03:39 you just depend on your quote unquote good players.
03:43 You'll be a lot of trouble there too.
03:44 So it's, I mean, it is what it is.
03:47 I mean, our goal is to get better this week.
03:50 Also goal is to not have anyone injured, which we're gonna, but
03:53 it's both of those are at risk.
03:55 We're gonna work our hardest to do it, but resting the obvious ones
04:00 sometimes can be the reason you lose cuz you lose all guys that you need to win
04:05 that game.
04:05 What allows big players to kind of do stuff that put teams over the hump that
04:09 fans can see is a lot of what happens with all the other guys.
04:12 You do a lot of the dirty work and stuff that give you a chance.
04:15 So everyone's so important when you go through a playoff run.
04:19 >> So what is the practice plan for Brock this week?
04:23 >> Brock, I mean, we're treating this as a normal week.
04:24 So this is a normal Wednesday at this time of year,
04:26 which means we go half speed on everything.
04:28 We don't do anything full speed this time of year on a Wednesday.
04:31 Brock will get half of the reps with the one, Sam will get the other.
04:35 I want our team to treat this week as Brock going down on the first play
04:40 of the game.
04:42 Now, that's why I want them both repping it.
04:43 I want Brock to get some work this week, and
04:45 that's something I'd like us to be ready for if that unfortunately did happen.
04:49 Thursday when it's all full speed, probably get Sam majority of them.
04:52 We'll talk about that after today, and Friday we're back to walk through.
04:56 >> I did truly comprehend everything you said.
04:58 >> I'm sure.
04:59 >> [LAUGH] >> Might it be good for
05:04 35 year old left tackle to have two bye weeks?
05:07 >> No, I don't think it's good for anybody to take two weeks off.
05:17 So not at all.
05:20 You should see how Trent was when he came back after a month off,
05:23 or three weeks.
05:23 It's not good, but we'll see how the game goes and everything.
05:26 But his mindset this week's gotta be that he's getting ready to play.
05:30 >> Obviously, the amount of players that you have as opposed to what you have in
05:33 the preseason, and the way you're approaching this game,
05:36 it's dramatically different.
05:37 But in terms of the game plan part of it, and what you're gonna put in and
05:41 use without divulging anything, is that preseason like?
05:44 >> I mean, yeah, there's a good chance we're playing this team in two weeks.
05:49 So I think both sides will be pretty vanilla on that.
05:53 I'd be surprised if there's too much stuff, but
05:56 we also know each other pretty well, both teams and the schemes.
05:59 And when we play each other, I don't think a lot goes into that anyway.
06:02 But every game affects the next game, so we gotta be smart how we do everything.
06:08 >> You're not really preparing for the Rams, but
06:10 how have they improved as the season's gone?
06:12 >> We're preparing for the Rams, big time.
06:14 We could see how good they could be in week two.
06:17 Anytime that you have a quarterback like Matt Stafford,
06:22 who is as good as anyone that I've ever studied.
06:25 And anytime you have that, you always have a chance.
06:30 I mean, he's always that guy.
06:32 But where they've improved the most is how much their run game's going.
06:34 It's as good as any run game in this league.
06:36 You put those together with that type of quarterback, their defense start out with
06:39 a lot of young guys, but they've played all year.
06:41 That's what we had to do in 17 and 18.
06:44 And when you have a generational playoff there with Aaron Donald,
06:47 with what they're doing on the other side,
06:48 that gives them a chance to be just as dangerous as anyone in this league.
06:52 >> Obviously, you're happy to have the one seed, but is this balancing who rests,
06:56 who plays, how much one of the harder things you do with this coach?
06:59 >> I mean, it's just different.
07:02 I mean, harder is when everybody's hurt and you don't feel like it's gonna be
07:08 really hard when you watch that tape to figure out how to win.
07:11 So I'd say those are the worst.
07:12 This is just different.
07:14 Stuff that you think it's gonna be one way cuz you haven't totally thought through
07:17 all of that.
07:18 And then once you really sit down and think about it,
07:20 you realize that's not really at all what people think it can be.
07:23 I mean, I wanna try to do everything as much as anybody thinks we should.
07:27 But then when you really think about all the things that connect,
07:30 it's not that simple.
07:31 And this is what I gotta make sure is this week doesn't hurt our team.
07:35 And that's what we're gonna make sure of.
07:36 >> Have you thought about how much, the 48 guys you sued up,
07:40 how many can you get by with playing in a game?
07:45 Is it 40, 38?
07:46 Have you thought about that?
07:48 >> Yeah, and which one of those guys got hurt?
07:51 That's why there's no absolute.
07:54 You can get by with 22 if I'd say one out of a 100 times, 1,000 times.
08:01 But I mean, it just all depends how something plays out.
08:03 I mean, it wasn't until a couple years ago they allowed an 8th hole lineman
08:06 to get up.
08:08 And if they wouldn't have had that new rule, we would have done our last three
08:11 series of Baltimore with Charlie Warner playing tackle.
08:14 So I mean, that stuff happens.
08:17 I mean, we went 20 years without having to play a third quarterback and
08:21 then all of a sudden it happened.
08:23 And then it's the championship game.
08:24 So when we were in Atlanta, we went all year only dressing two running backs.
08:30 And it didn't hurt until the Super Bowl when we lost to Heaven for
08:33 the whole game and Devontae was hurt.
08:36 So it's all risk and that stuff you gotta balance out and
08:40 that stuff you gotta be ready to see how it goes.
08:43 But it's, man, you got five receivers up, you wanna sit a couple.
08:49 Well, how do you get practice squad guys up?
08:52 You can get two.
08:54 We also have a corner down in Ambrey who had surgery.
08:56 We had Gip who probably won't be able to go with this thigh.
08:58 Eric Harris is out of practice squad.
09:01 So get another, we're already down to Logan Ryan.
09:03 So do you go with three safeties?
09:05 Or do you cut people to get up an extra practice squad guy receiver?
09:08 Christian probably not gonna be able to go, isn't.
09:13 So do we go with two backs in that situation and just ride one?
09:15 Or do we flex one of those practice squads and
09:20 go with one less safety and one less corner and only have three or
09:22 four there which maybe could work unless someone gets a cramp?
09:25 It's everything.
09:28 So I wouldn't waste your guys' time learning it.
09:32 Just like I don't waste my time learning all the injury names for Eric.
09:36 But it's not easy.
09:39 >> There's a motion you do mostly with Christian but
09:44 sometimes with other guys.
09:46 It's kind of like a shuffle to the side that looks,
09:49 I don't think a lot of other teams in the league do it.
09:51 What are sort of the benefits of that motion where you sort of might end up in
09:54 a weird position behind the line?
09:56 What are the drawbacks?
09:57 >> Just watching how it moves the defense, getting people out of positions,
10:00 watching people's adjustments, how they're gonna treat it.
10:02 I mean, when people haven't seen it before, then it's cool, but
10:07 then they see you do it.
10:08 So they adjust to it and you see what that does to people and
10:12 does it help something and open up another, but
10:15 it's just about getting people to move.
10:17 >> You mentioned Gibson played this week.
10:20 Is there any concern with him or Feliciano?
10:22 Those are the kind of two new additions here.
10:23 >> No, I mean, Gip ended up, I think we got yesterday, he had a quad strain.
10:28 So I mean, that could be anywhere seven to ten days.
10:30 So the odds aren't, I mean, that can heal faster too, but
10:32 just with our situation, the odds aren't there.
10:34 And Feliciano, new thing came up, but we feel pretty good about it.
10:40 So we'll just see how the week goes out.
10:41 >> [INAUDIBLE]
10:43 >> Six return to IR designations left.
10:47 >> Is that on purpose?
10:48 I mean, did you guys resist putting some players on IR just so
10:52 that you'd have a lot heading into the playoffs to use?
10:56 >> Well, also, I mean, last year we ran out of them.
10:59 We didn't think we'd have them all and then towards the end of the year,
11:02 we had to, I think, decide between Ridgeway and Jimmy.
11:05 And we ended up losing Ridgeway because of that.
11:07 So we wanted to make sure, I mean, we didn't wanna do any just to do it.
11:10 Sometimes you gotta do it cuz it's close to that time and
11:13 you gotta help get other guys on your roster.
11:14 But we didn't have as many of those situations this year.
11:16 So we got extra left.
11:18 But that does help you when guys do get hurt.
11:21 It just allows you not to lose them so you can get someone else on your roster.
11:25 >> In a way, is this more stressful for you to coach a week like this than if you
11:30 needed to win this game to clench?
11:32 >> No.
11:33 >> [LAUGH]
11:34 >> I'm testing you.
11:35 >> Yeah, no, this is just stuff that's a little annoying to think about.
11:39 But once you kinda do, which we had time to do that the last couple days and
11:43 I just had to talk to some players so they understand it.
11:45 Then we're good, we're gonna enjoy this week.
11:48 >> With Pro Bowl stuff coming out officially later today,
11:51 can you kinda just put in perspective?
11:53 I mean, you're supposed to get a slew of guys probably today.
11:56 I mean, you came into this franchise and there were none in 2016.
11:59 Just how you and John have built this roster to this level.
12:03 >> I mean, I just think it's been real cool that most of our Pro Bowlers,
12:07 I feel like, have come from here.
12:10 I know we brought in Christian, we brought in Trent.
12:13 But it was just cool watching some of these guys who we go back and
12:16 watch playoff games from 2019 and stuff.
12:19 And you just see rookies out there, second rookies with Greenlaw and
12:23 Debo and second year player like with Fred, first year player with Bosa.
12:28 You just think of some of those guys who came here and
12:30 now they're kinda household names and they do it year in and year out.
12:33 And it's cool, I mean, it's awesome when you bring in someone like Christian,
12:36 someone like Trent.
12:38 Just different type of players that we got a chance to add to this group.
12:41 But I think of some of the stuff we had to go through to build this up and
12:46 it's just really cool.
12:46 We hit on some guys that weren't only just talented guys, but
12:50 really made of the right stuff, which has allowed them to turn themselves into that
12:53 and continue to get better each year after.
12:55 >> Kyle, as we enter the walls of being Man of the Year voting,
12:59 what makes Eric just so deserving for his leadership on and
13:02 off the field after four nominations?
13:05 >> Just how he does it day in and day out, year round.
13:09 I didn't even know about all this stuff till I've been here long enough to where I
13:12 gradually hear about it.
13:13 And he doesn't do it just for everyone to know about it.
13:17 He does it cuz he has a passion for it.
13:19 I know how with where he's from, being close to here, and
13:22 how much he's helped for that area.
13:24 I know Eric truly loves it, is truly a great person in that way.
13:28 And I know how much all of our team looks up to him in that way on kinda handle
13:32 all social issues and just really how to be the best person you can.
13:36 >> All right, injuries for today, Armstead won't practice,
13:39 Christian McCaffrey won't practice, Ross Duelly won't practice,
13:43 John Feliciano won't with back, Ambry with surgery head.
13:48 Elijah Mitchell won't practice, he's sick.
13:51 Gibson has a quad, won't practice, Jair Brown, knee, won't practice.
13:56 Juwan Jennings and Jaylen Moore, both limited with their concussions from
14:00 a couple weeks ago.
14:01 And Aaron Banks and Danny are full.
