00:07 Welcome back to the Carriker Chronicles, the people show where you check the pulse of Husker
00:12 Nation brought to you by DPS Concrete Construction.
00:14 Check them out at dpsconstruction.net.
00:17 Ladies and gentlemen, I'm excited to be back doing what I love, which is talking Nebraska
00:21 football, college football.
00:23 I won't mention that I about died while I was skiing in Steamboat.
00:28 I might have fell.
00:29 I didn't.
00:30 Anyways, I digress.
00:31 Ladies and gentlemen, I'm excited.
00:33 There's lots to talk about this offseason.
00:35 College football is pretty much year-round now.
00:37 Alright, real quick, if you haven't done so yet, hit that subscribe button if you want
00:41 more Carriker Chronicles content and you don't want to miss anything.
00:44 Before Christmas, we had about a 30 to 33% of the folks who watched our videos were subscribers.
00:49 Now we're up to about 40.
00:50 Okay, throughout the offseason, I'm going to be trying to be putting out content twice
00:54 a week.
00:55 I'm including interviews.
00:56 I'm going to be doing a reaction to the National Championship game on Monday.
00:59 What Nebraska can learn.
01:00 Transfer portal stuff.
01:02 All sorts of stuff.
01:03 Alright, now, if you like what Matt Ruhle has done so far this offseason, bringing in
01:09 a top 20 recruiting class, number 18 in the country.
01:13 In fact, they had 29 signees, tied for most, okay, out of 130+ FBS teams.
01:20 Obviously, that includes Dylan Raiola, the number one quarterback in the country.
01:23 Okay, now Georgia, who had the number one class in the country, had the second most
01:28 signees with 28.
01:29 If you like what Matt Ruhle and his staff have done this offseason, then smash that
01:33 like button.
01:34 Random side note, Colorado has 6 total signees and the 102nd ranked class in the country
01:39 right now.
01:40 I just thought that was interesting, but in fairness to the Buffaloes, who wants to be
01:44 fair to them, I guess I will, they have more transfer portal signees, okay, than anybody
01:49 else in the country.
01:50 The number two class in the country right now.
01:52 All right, last year, they had 56 guys who transferred out and 50 guys who transferred
01:57 in.
01:58 All right, they already this year had the second most amount of transfer commits in
02:01 the entire country.
02:02 Okay, Coach Prime, he's about that instant turnover, that instant gratification.
02:06 Matt Ruhle's more of a bring in the young guys, develop them, train them our way type
02:10 process, retaining players and keeping them over time.
02:13 Okay, now, again, they have the number one transfer portal class last year, Colorado
02:18 did, I'm sorry.
02:19 More transfers last year than the number two, three and four transfer portal classes combined,
02:24 which was Louisville, USC, UCLA.
02:26 I just thought some of those things were kind of interesting.
02:28 All right, now one thing that did stand out to me, and then I'll talk Nebraska, okay,
02:33 the transfer portal guys that are in this week, this weekend and things of that nature.
02:37 One thing that stood out to me about the number one transfer portal class in the entire country
02:42 belongs to Ole Miss right now.
02:44 The last three years, they've had the number one class transfer portal, number six and
02:47 number one in the entire country.
02:49 All right, keep your eye on Lane Kiffin and those Rebels next season.
02:52 All right, to the Huskers, to the team that really matters.
02:55 The last three seasons, we've had the 14th ranked transfer portal class a couple years
02:59 ago.
03:00 Okay, we had 20 players who transferred out and 16 who transferred in.
03:03 Last year, the 41st ranked transfer portal class in the country, 26 players who transferred
03:07 out, 14 who transferred in.
03:09 This year, okay, and this week I should say, and weekend, we have five transfer portal
03:16 visitors to Nebraska.
03:17 All right, now I've got notable players who've entered the transfer portal from Nebraska
03:21 since it opened, okay, in December.
03:24 Quarterback Jeff Sims, Chubba Purdy, all right, son of Husker legend Baron Miles, all right,
03:29 Baron Miles Jr. who's a wide receiver, linebacker Randolph Kapai, I just always like saying
03:34 his name, things just didn't work out with him.
03:35 Okay, there were some others as well, obviously, but the Huskers' retention rate, okay, of
03:40 players has been phenomenal.
03:41 And I've talked about that on some of my other videos and other shows, and I haven't
03:45 really talked about transfer portal guys yet.
03:49 Now that's the focus for Nebraska at this point in time.
03:51 So it's time to talk about those things.
03:54 I will say this, the retention of players in Nebraska, as I mentioned in this show and
03:58 other shows, if you missed it, go check it out, is as good as anybody in the country
04:01 and explains why Nebraska hasn't had to bring in a bunch of transfer portal players.
04:05 Okay, and like I said, now's the time to focus on that.
04:07 So here are five players visiting this week and this weekend to the Big Red, starting
04:12 with running back Dante Dodwell from Oregon.
04:15 Now he was a consensus four-star out of high school, the most highly touted of all the
04:20 players that are visiting this weekend and weekend coming out of high school.
04:24 Most highly touted and most highly recruited player, that is.
04:27 He was number 131, number 151, number 194 in the entire country, depending on which
04:31 recruiting service you looked at.
04:32 Basically a consensus 150, 200, top 200 type player.
04:38 Now he was a freshman last year at Oregon.
04:40 Now Oregon's running back room is pretty loaded.
04:43 When he entered the transfer portal, he drew immediate interest from all over the country.
04:48 Nebraska running backs coach EJ Barthel, according to Dante's dad, caught their attention.
04:53 He said, and I quote, "He believed Dante could make an early impact at Nebraska," said
04:58 Lawrence Hopkins, Dodwell's father.
05:00 "That was a huge factor to at least draw a visit."
05:04 Now when you look at what Matt Rule has said about the running backs room, he said he feels
05:07 pretty good about the room.
05:08 Okay, he just flat out said he has four running backs he likes.
05:11 You got Emma Johnson, Quentin Ives, young players that he really likes a lot.
05:15 You got Gabe Irvin, Ramiro Johnson, guys coming back from injuries, vets, okay, that have
05:20 started games in their own right, in their own career.
05:22 They're expected to come back and be healthy next year.
05:24 I think this is a scenario where Dante is just so talented, how do you not take a look
05:27 at him if you're Matt Rule?
05:29 Alright, you look at who's next.
05:30 Isaiah Nair out of Texas.
05:32 Now, he's supposed to be in this weekend, and to be clear, you never know how these
05:36 things are actually going to shake up.
05:38 Right now it's five portal guys that we're looking at this week and weekend, okay.
05:42 Who knows what the actual number will be because sometimes that can be a fluid situation.
05:45 But he left Wyoming under former Nebraska coach Craig Boll, who built a dynamic program
05:52 at North Dakota State, then did really well at Wyoming.
05:55 I say that because he just retired.
05:57 Congrats and shout out to Craig Boll.
05:59 Actually the man who recruited me, he was my D coordinator my freshman year at Nebraska.
06:03 Now he was one of the best players in the entire Mountain West Conference when he entered
06:06 the portal, okay.
06:07 And then he transferred to Texas.
06:09 He was the hottest wide receiver in the entire portal, if I'm being honest with you at that
06:12 point in time.
06:13 Now he chose Texas over USC, Florida, Ole Miss, and Tennessee.
06:16 He suffered an injury during his time in Austin.
06:19 He was projected at that time to be the Longhorns top wide receiver.
06:23 Had a little bit of trouble bouncing back, but he really just needs a place to find his
06:28 stride.
06:29 Very talented, very high ceiling, lot of potential, big body.
06:32 Rule and his staff are going after big body type receivers.
06:36 Isaiah 63215.
06:38 Big target, one year of eligibility left, an immediate potential starter and veteran
06:42 type player.
06:44 We got a lot of young, speedy receivers.
06:47 I guarantee Rule wants a big bodied vet type wide receiver to go along with these young,
06:52 fast wide receivers we currently have.
06:55 Okay, and Nair is very interested in Nebraska.
06:59 Next up on the docket, real quick before I get to the final four players.
07:03 If you are a diesel mechanic, a CDL driver, a concrete finisher looking for work in the
07:07 Omaha metro area, DPS Construction is the employer for you.
07:12 If you're a general contractor, building owner, or property manager looking for concrete repair
07:16 or work done in the Omaha metro area such as street paving, building floors, and parking
07:20 lots, check out DPS Construction at .net.
07:24 Next up, Jamal Brooks.
07:26 Wake Forest wide receiver, 64205.
07:28 Again another big bodied veteran type receiver.
07:32 Received to be on Lincoln this weekend.
07:34 Now he's had two straight years of over 600 yards of receiving.
07:37 He's probably, well he's not probably, he is the most accomplished player of any visitor
07:41 that we're going to have throughout this week or weekend here at Lincoln.
07:44 In four years with the Demon Deacons he has 107 career catches, 1,404 yards, 13 TDs in
07:50 44 games.
07:51 Last year alone he had 59 catches, 653 yards, and 4 TDs.
07:55 He has one year of eligibility left due to COVID rules, so he'd be like one of those
08:00 super duper seniors I guess if you want to look at it like that.
08:03 Now he's also being courted by teams like Michigan, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Minnesota,
08:08 and Purdue.
08:09 Alright, next up is true freshman linebacker from Idaho, X Alexander.
08:14 Now he has an offer, he got an offer from Nebraska on Christmas Eve.
08:17 Alright, nice little Christmas present there.
08:19 He's a three star coming out of high school.
08:22 Freshman All-American.
08:23 He almost led Idaho in tackles, number two on the team in tackles as a true freshman
08:27 with 75 tackles.
08:28 Now he blocked a kick and had two forced fumbles in addition as well.
08:31 Previously committed to Arizona State, when Herm Edwards was let go, Alexander flipped
08:36 to Idaho.
08:37 The new staff at Arizona State really came in and wanted to focus on transfer portal
08:41 players at that time.
08:42 Now Alexander has generated a lot of interest from Power 5 teams since entering the portal.
08:48 His dad and brother, side note, did play for the University of Washington and he is from
08:51 the Seattle area.
08:52 Okay, but he's a guy to keep your eye on and there's definitely interest on both sides
08:56 from him and obviously as well as the Big Red.
09:01 Another linebacker who played three seasons under Tony White at Syracuse is Stephan Thompson.
09:06 Alright, now he's played in 36 career games, 169 career tackles, 20 TFLs, earned a starting
09:11 job actually as a true freshman all the way back in 2020.
09:14 He's 6'1", 248 pounds, has two seasons of eligibility left and this is a guy who could
09:19 potentially be a multi-year starter in the middle of this 3-3-5 defense.
09:24 He also has offers from Arizona State and Kansas State as well.
09:29 Now those are the five players, this week and this weekend, just so you have a little
09:33 bit of background info, keep an eye on them.
09:36 But I can't help but wonder about the quarterback position.
09:40 A potential transfer quarterback coming in or not.
09:43 Alright, here are my thoughts.
09:47 Okay right off the top, you got Heimer Carberg already on the roster who won five games last
09:50 year.
09:51 You got the number one recruit in the entire country.
09:52 I'm sorry, number one quarterback recruit in the entire country, a kid who was a number
09:55 one recruit overall for a long time, and Dylan Raiola coming in.
09:58 You got another quarterback who was an Elite 11 quarterback.
10:01 Alright, you got two of those guys on the roster now and he's the only Elite 11 quarterback
10:05 from Nebraska in history as well.
10:08 Alright, he was, let's be honest, Daniel in his own right was sought after by other schools
10:12 and actually committed to a team that's currently in the top ten.
10:15 So do they need a transfer portal quarterback?
10:17 Do they?
10:18 With that on the roster?
10:19 I think they do because here's another way of looking at those same very talented players.
10:23 Carberg, love the, I absolutely love this kid.
10:26 I do.
10:27 I love the kid, love the way he plays, nothing but class.
10:29 But I've talked about the kid maybe needing to switch positions this offseason.
10:32 Okay?
10:33 I've just thrown that out there.
10:34 Now that was when Purdy was on the team.
10:36 Okay?
10:37 And also two of these three guys are true freshmen.
10:40 Alright?
10:41 Now, here's my thoughts.
10:43 I'm just going to be blunt.
10:44 Coaches can't screw up the quarterback position again.
10:46 You can't do that two years in a row.
10:48 No excuses.
10:49 Alright?
10:50 The other thing you don't want to do is you don't want to damage a young quarterback's
10:52 confidence by having to play him too soon, in my humble opinion.
10:55 Now, here's the conundrum that they've got.
10:57 I do think they can get a portal quarterback.
11:00 Okay?
11:01 But you want someone who can compete to start right away.
11:03 Alright?
11:04 But might be okay not starting next year.
11:06 You know?
11:07 Because I think a year from now there's going to be a lot of eyes on Dylan or Daniel, whoever,
11:10 to potentially start.
11:12 So maybe it's a senior type quarterback, which rule is set, he doesn't really want, but maybe
11:15 in this scenario it works.
11:17 Okay?
11:18 And the other thing to consider is the transfer portal is kind of sort of limited on options
11:23 of the quarterback position at this point as well.
11:27 Alright.
11:28 And I've got some questions for you fine folks.
11:31 Now, the five players I've talked about, they are potential key pieces and potential impact
11:36 players here at the University of Nebraska.
11:39 So my question for you, alright, three of them, let me know in the comments below as
11:43 always, of the positional players visiting this week/weekend, what's the most important
11:47 position the Huskers need to help, get help with through the transfer portal?
11:51 Wide receiver, linebacker, or running back?
11:54 Alright, number two, how many of the players visiting this week/weekend will sign with
12:00 Nebraska?
12:01 One, two, three, four, five.
12:02 Just let me know the number.
12:03 And as far as which position is the most important position Nebraska needs to sign, just simply
12:08 write wide receiver, linebacker, or running back.
12:12 And also, does Nebraska need to sign a transfer portal quarterback?
12:16 Just simply say yes or no.
12:18 Just simply write the position, simply say yes or no, or simply write the number for
12:22 the appropriate answer to the appropriate question.
12:24 Alright, ladies and gentlemen, if you are on the social medias, alright, and if you're
12:29 so inclined, you can check me out on Twitter and on Facebook, #CheapPlug.
12:34 Until next time, Husker Nation, Go Big Red, have a phenomenal week and weekend, and always
12:39 remember to THROW THE BUTT!
