00:00 Does the person you are with encourage you to read?
00:06 You have to ask, what does he bring for me? Roses or books?
00:11 If someone has a stake in making you better, that person will push you towards books.
00:17 Books are what we all need.
00:21 [Music]
00:33 Good evening sir. I am *** and I am a PhD student here at IIT Kanpur.
00:40 So I have a very personal question.
00:43 Being a girl child, especially in India, comes with very different sets of consequences.
00:50 Despite being given equal opportunities like education and skills,
00:54 at the end where we are supposed to get a proper match,
01:00 we are being judged merely on two and I guess only two things,
01:06 which is first, how you look, and second, does your kundali match with the groom or the guy.
01:13 So right now I am witnessing a very disturbing thing.
01:19 There is a girl who is a surgeon by education.
01:22 She is completely independent, yet her matches which are being filtered by her parents,
01:29 who are well educated, are completely based on is the guy Manglik.
01:35 Irrespective of whether the guy is fulfilling the education eligibility or personality
01:42 or other things which are supposed to be considered.
01:46 So how to handle this situation?
01:50 Relieve yourself of the obligation to handle this situation.
01:55 You handle a situation only when first of all you are in the situation.
02:03 Just drop the situation.
02:06 Just move past the situation.
02:10 I mean the girl in question is a qualified doctor. You said she is a surgeon.
02:19 The first thing I find amusing is how is she outsourcing all these matters to other people.
02:31 I mean medical studies, they are long drawn affairs.
02:40 She must be over 25 at least, 28, 30, maybe 32. I don't know what's her age.
02:46 That is another point that she has passed a certain…
02:50 Right. That also means that she has gained a certain maturity.
02:54 I do not see that as a disadvantage.
02:59 If she is 32, she is more mature than the ones who are 25. Right?
03:04 So she is mature enough and she is a qualified surgeon.
03:08 She might be earning as well. If not a salary, then at least a stipend.
03:13 So she is earning handsomely, educated.
03:19 And when it… come on, that's a bit of a joke.
03:25 Why is she looking towards the society which includes the family or what not to fetch her a groom?
03:34 Why is that happening in the first place?
03:37 See, let's say I am an elephant.
03:42 I am a qualified elephant.
03:46 With all the mass, the size, the energy, the bulk, everything.
03:53 I am a qualified elephant.
03:56 And then, you know, I am going to rabbits and to deer and to mice
04:09 and I am asking them, "Can you fetch me some grains, some grass?
04:14 Does it behove me?"
04:19 I should do it for myself. Come on, DIY.
04:25 That's my advice to all girls. Simple.
04:30 And to all boys.
04:34 Why are you unnecessarily troubling your old parents?
04:39 What's the point?
04:42 It's their time to get into deeper pursuits of life.
04:47 Some pilgrimage, some spirituality.
04:51 There are lot of other things. Let them live their life to the fullest.
04:56 First of all, the poor souls suffered in their own affairs.
05:03 Now you are putting the load of your affairs on their head. No, no, no.
05:11 I am telling you, they will be very happy. Just tell them.
05:16 "Ma, Papa, you do not need to bother about this particular thing.
05:21 I am Atmanirbhar."
05:25 So that's what is self-sufficiency.
05:30 And once you have outsourced this function,
05:36 you have lost the rights to complain.
05:42 Now how can you say that they are choosing the groom based on this criteria
05:50 or that the groom is looking at me only with eyes of lust and physicality
05:57 and the horoscope has become all important
06:00 and the girl's figure and the body and the sexuality has become all important.
06:05 Come on, you did it to yourself. How are you now complaining?
06:10 If you didn't want this to happen, you should have first of all kept matters in your own hands.
06:17 The elephant has been begging the rabbits.
06:22 Go fetch me some grains and grass.
06:27 And the rabbits will choose the grass based on their own tastes.
06:36 And when the rabbits bring the grass to the elephant, the elephant says, "Oh, I do not like this grass.
06:41 I will complain about it in an online interaction."
06:46 But if you wanted the grass of your own size and colour and flavour, then you should have done it.
06:58 On your own.
07:00 On your own and for yourself. It's such an intimate thing.
07:05 It's the most intimate thing possible, is it not?
07:07 What are others doing in this matter?
07:11 And even if others do poke their nose in,
07:17 they very well know that they cannot avoid the fact of the intimacy for too long.
07:25 All kinds of interactions are going to happen between the girl and the groom.
07:34 Will the parents be there to intervene and mediate?
07:40 Will they enter the bedroom as well?
07:43 Will there be a party to all kinds of interactions that happen between the man and the woman?
07:50 Not necessarily sexual, but of all kinds.
07:53 So I find those parents very irresponsible.
07:59 Who make their presence mandatory in matters where they actually have no say, no reason to be present.
08:16 The man is there, the woman is there and both are adults and they will decide on their own matters.
08:25 What is anybody else doing in this scheme of things?
08:31 Now obviously, if you want advice, you can respectfully seek advice.
08:39 That is one thing.
08:42 Another thing, to be obliged to have a mediator or a governor or a decider.
08:54 Are you getting it?
09:01 And once you accept that kind of mediation or outsourcing,
09:12 I do not think you have the right to complain.
09:19 There are so many men in the world of so many types.
09:30 A lot of them would naturally be lustful, given the kind of people we are.
09:34 How are you obliged to bear the gaze of the lustful ones?
09:48 If you come across a lustful one, what do you do? You walk away.
09:59 No, you stand in front of that person and he is ogling and staring and measuring your body with his eyesight.
10:06 And you still keep standing there right in front of him.
10:10 And then you complain, why are men like this, why are men like this?
10:13 Men will be men and women will be women.
10:15 Why don't you simply walk away?
10:17 We can start a program of social reformation, obviously.
10:27 We can start a program to civilize the menfolk, obviously.
10:31 But when you are encountering a man who is measuring you mostly by the shape and size and attractiveness of your body,
10:47 then that's not the point to keep engaging with that man.
10:55 Disengage, look elsewhere, start walking.
11:02 There is no point in complaining.
11:07 There are so many of them.
11:11 We can choose commodities, potatoes.
11:18 What do you do when you come upon a rotten one?
11:24 You just toss it away.
11:25 You pick another one, right?
11:27 You do not go to the Ministry of Agriculture and start proposing a way to have better potatoes.
11:38 All that can happen in due course.
11:41 But first of all, you pick up a rotten potato or a fruit or whatever it is.
11:48 Then you embrace it for life.
11:54 And you keep cooking.
11:56 There is no point.
12:02 One thing that all wisdom is founded on is your right to choose.
12:15 You have the right to choose.
12:21 Why then must you act as if you are under compulsion?
12:35 Nobody can force your hand.
12:41 Remember your right to choose.
12:51 Always take the onus of your life on yourself.
12:59 The responsibility is all yours.
13:02 I could have gone into and launched myself into a long lecture on
13:17 what kind of stupidity this horoscope matching thing is.
13:20 It is absolutely nonsensical to think of Manglik and what not.
13:25 But I will not talk of that.
13:27 Why must I talk of that?
13:36 If there is something you do not condone,
13:45 if there is something that you do not accept or like, reject it. Simple.
13:52 There is no need to even justify it to others.
14:04 There is no need to even first of all try to correct that thing.
14:07 Let the society believe in horoscopes.
14:09 If you know all that is stupidity,
14:12 just silently walk past that thing.
14:27 An educated woman acting helpless and choiceless is not a pretty sight to behold.
14:34 You are a human being.
14:40 You are a consciousness with choice.
14:44 And you have been empowered internally with education and externally with laws.
14:51 This country works on rule of law.
14:56 And the laws are very very favourable to women.
14:59 In fact men complain that the laws are actually too favourable to women.
15:04 So you are educated. You have the support of laws.
15:09 Why are you acting so dull and helpless now?
15:15 Rise, exercise your choice and live a free life.
15:20 An external freedom, even if it is guaranteed by law,
15:39 will not be of much use if you are internally still enslaved.
15:47 Enslaved by custom, tradition, emotions, ignorance.
15:53 That's what happens with a lot of educated women as well.
15:57 Highly educated yet internally uneducated.
16:01 So they do not know their own emotions.
16:04 PhDs from the top most universities of the world.
16:14 Indian women.
16:17 And yet internally they live in an emotional darkness.
16:22 A darkness they have never bothered to penetrate with the light of wisdom.
16:27 What is the result?
16:30 Suboptimal decisions in life.
16:33 Influenced decisions in life.
16:36 Destroyed careers.
16:39 Bad kind of relationships.
16:43 Irreversible bondages.
16:49 Not entirely irreversible but difficult to tackle.
16:54 Why?
16:57 Because there was education in terms of a degree.
17:07 There is economic opportunity.
17:11 There is legal support.
17:13 Yet internally she was still what women have always been since centuries.
17:19 That internal freedom can come only from self-knowledge.
17:25 That's adhyatma, that's wisdom.
17:29 That's Vedanta.
17:33 I am fond of saying spirituality is the best friend of a girl.
17:41 That alone can empower her and give her wings.
17:49 I personally agreed to what you have said and I am also a believer of it.
18:00 I cannot talk about all the women.
18:05 I am talking personally about the case which I have shared.
18:09 Why that individual is doing which is suboptimal to her is just for the sake of happiness of her parents.
18:19 Because again, Indian thing I want to focus on.
18:26 We do most of the things to make our parents happy.
18:30 Keeping our parents away from this life altering decision is not the part of our tradition.
18:39 That's why you need wisdom so that you know the right definition of happiness.
18:46 So that you know what is the common goal of all individuals including your parents.
18:57 You want good things to happen to your parents, right?
19:01 You must first of all know the definition of goodness.
19:04 Happiness is not goodness.
19:07 A drunkard can start feeling very happy
19:13 if served some nonsense.
19:16 You do not want to do that to him, right?
19:20 And all of us are drunkards.
19:22 Entire humanity is drunk.
19:24 That's what is meant by inner ignorance.
19:27 So making somebody happy is not the right thing you want to serve to him.
19:38 Think of what makes a little kid happy.
19:42 He wants more and more chocolates.
19:43 You want to feed that to him?
19:46 Happiness is such a small thing and an influenced thing and a conditioned thing.
19:55 Similarly tradition. What is tradition?
20:00 What people have been doing since long is tradition.
20:03 So explain how what people have been doing since long becomes the right thing to be done today.
20:12 Please explain.
20:13 There is no explanation anybody can offer.
20:17 So what is the worth of any tradition?
20:19 Truth has no patience with tradition at all, mind you.
20:26 You can choose one of these two.
20:29 Either truth or tradition.
20:31 And it's so amusing, rather horrifying
20:37 that people especially in this country have been conflating truth and tradition.
20:42 They think if something is traditional, it is truthful.
20:48 What can be further away from truth?
20:55 I fully understand and I want kids to do good things to their parents.
21:06 And I want parents to bring goodness to their kids.
21:10 But goodness is contained neither in tradition nor in happiness.
21:15 Goodness is a different being altogether.
21:22 Goodness is welfare.
21:25 Goodness is elevation of consciousness.
21:29 Goodness is freedom, liberation.
21:31 Goodness is the light of self-knowledge.
21:35 That's what you must bring to your parents and to your kids.
21:38 But it's a very entangled mess.
21:50 If you will have to go deeply into it, you will have to understand what love is.
21:57 We think love is about making the other happy.
22:00 So far removed from the truth once again.
22:07 Love is also not about making the other sad.
22:23 Love is about bringing light to the other person.
22:29 Bringing wings to the other person, bringing sense to the other person.
22:35 That's what love is.
22:37 So if you love your parents, bring some sense to them.
22:40 If you love your friends or your kids, bring sense to them.
22:45 That's what love is.
22:47 I would like to ask just one last question.
22:54 How to begin this conversation of bringing this light to the ones who we respect?
23:02 And here I am talking about our parents.
23:04 I will turn the question on its head.
23:06 Why is it difficult to begin this conversation?
23:09 Had it been easy, you wouldn't have asked me.
23:12 Why must it be difficult?
23:16 Just as you say tea or coffee, begin the conversation.
23:23 There is no difficulty in it.
23:26 You are trying to actually do something good.
23:29 Why must that be first of all blocked by an inner sense of difficulty?
23:35 Think of the surgeon.
23:50 When she is to perform a surgery, would she consult her parents?
23:53 And being a surgeon, she would perform like hundreds of surgeries in her career, won't she?
24:04 I suppose if she is a few years into her career,
24:09 she would have already performed dozens of surgeries at least.
24:13 Does she consult the parents?
24:17 Now tell me, how many times do you get married in your life?
24:22 If you are lucky, then you don't get married at all.
24:30 The probable number is 1.
24:37 Otherwise it could be 2 or 3.
24:41 But the most probable number is 1.
24:45 Now surgeries, there are hundreds that you perform.
24:49 Marriage, there is just one that you get into.
24:53 Which one is more important?
24:55 Which one is more important?
25:00 According to me both, sir.
25:02 No, not for the patients.
25:05 But for the surgeon.
25:09 Surgery.
25:13 Now even for the surgery, which is of much lesser importance to her,
25:18 she knows she is self-sufficient.
25:22 Even for a thing of lesser importance, she knows she is self-sufficient.
25:29 Whereas the thing is of a matter of life and death for the patient.
25:34 Then how is she not self-sufficient when it comes to the marriage?
25:39 No, please, logic.
25:50 And if the parents are to be consulted for marriage,
25:56 then they should be present at the operating table also.
26:01 And also that Pandit with the Kundali.
26:05 Matching the horoscope of the patient with that of the nurse or the doctor or whatever.
26:10 And saying that the operation can happen only in this particular muhurat.
26:15 I mean it's pretty interesting.
26:23 Why are operations not done as per muhurat?
26:26 Think.
26:29 Somebody's life is at stake.
26:33 Or is life inferior to wife?
26:37 When wife is at stake, you say muhurat.
26:40 And right now, somebody is literally ripping open your stomach and your heart.
26:46 Finding just blood there, no love.
26:50 And no horoscope is being consulted.
26:55 That's what happens in absence of a spiritual environment.
27:16 Even simple things get complicated.
27:24 Alright.
27:25 Thank you so much, sir.
