00:00 (car engine roaring)
00:03 - Can you explain why you think the show
00:07 was such a huge hit?
00:09 - Well, I think it was the red car, obviously.
00:11 - It was that sexy car.
00:13 - Yeah, right, here they come.
00:14 Guys are undercover, but oh, there's that red car.
00:16 (dramatic music)
00:26 - I think probably because the relationship
00:30 between Paul and myself was so strong,
00:32 and it still is today, you know?
00:34 I count him as my dearest friend.
00:37 And for me, the legacy of that show is the friendship
00:41 that develops between these two guys,
00:44 Starsky and Hutch, and also Paul and David.
00:46 - How'd you know?
00:47 - Every time somebody made a move,
00:49 you made the travel arrangements.
00:51 It's just as simple as that.
00:53 - It comes across on the screen.
00:56 I think the best relationships are the ones
00:58 where the fewest words are necessary.
00:59 The look tells it all.
01:01 And I think that's one of the reasons
01:03 why Starsky and Hutch was popular for such a long time.
01:06 (dramatic music)
01:09 There are a lot of other elements in it, of course.
01:21 I mean, it was one of the very first heavy action films
01:26 in that day, and it was a bit of the cartoon,
01:30 but at the same time, we dealt with real issues.
01:32 When I look at the films now,
01:33 they actually, they stand up, you know?
01:35 Even today.
01:36 And there were not a lot of special effects.
01:38 There was a real human touch to the show.
01:43 And I think those things work subliminally
01:45 on an audience's mind.
01:46 Besides that, I mean, who couldn't love us?
01:49 (laughs)
01:50 - Hey, Hutch.
01:53 You know where I can fence a TV set?
01:56 - Fence it?
02:00 - That's right.
02:00 - You mean sell it?
02:02 - Sell it.
02:03 That's an idea.
02:04 - In the era of television that I grew up in, in the '70s,
02:07 there were basically only three major networks, right?
02:13 And shows like Starsky and Hutch were kind of an event
02:17 in the house, and people gathered around,
02:19 and they became part of the family, really.
02:22 Well, that's why I say, you know,
02:23 if you can do one thing in your life
02:24 that has touched people that way,
02:27 and has provided good entertainment for people,
02:30 you should be proud of that, in a good way.
02:32 You know what I mean?
02:33 Not in an ego kind of way, but in a, yeah,
02:35 satisfaction, it's a good satisfaction.
02:37 - Right, right.
02:38 - People have been entertained, and you were part of that.
02:41 (camera shutter clicks)
02:44 - Hey, Wilbur, it's such a lucky day.
02:46 Lakers won.
