00:03 The UK Health Security Agency and the Met Office have issued an amber cold health alert
00:08 for the East Midlands, including Derbyshire this week.
00:12 As the Met Office is forecasting a period of lower than average temperatures this week,
00:16 the yellow cold health alert is in place in Derbyshire until 12pm on Friday, January 12th.
00:22 Under the new system introduced by the UK HSA and the Met Office, an amber alert means
00:27 that cold weather impacts are likely to be felt across the whole health service for an
00:31 extended period of time, with the potential for the whole population to be at risk, and
00:35 where other sectors may also start to observe impacts, indicating a coordinated response
00:40 is required.
00:41 Dr Vanessa McGregor, consultant in communicable disease control at the UK HSA and the East
00:47 Midlands said, "With the Met Office forecasting drops in temperature across the UK next week,
00:52 it is important to check on the well-being of those most vulnerable to the cold."
00:56 She added, "Cold weather can increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes and chest infections,
01:01 so it can have a serious impact on health, particularly for older people and those with
01:05 pre-existing health conditions."
01:09 A flock of 350 waxwings has gathered to feast on hawthorn berries at Hassep Station on the
01:14 Monsell train near Bakewell.
01:17 Significant numbers of the birds, who are visitors from Scandinavia and Russia, are
01:20 being reported this winter across the country.
01:23 The birds visit to feed when food is in short supply on the continent.
01:27 This season is thought to be the best waxwing winter for a decade.
01:31 Years without waxwings visiting Britain are known as blank winters.
