00:02A Chesterfield family is calling for changes to the law to prevent further tragedies, following
00:08the inquest into the death of a much-loved dad of two who always put others before himself.
00:13John Prigent, 47, of Chesterfield, died in 2020 following a tragic incident after a tractor
00:19and its trailer decoupled, Chesterfield Coroner's Court heard.
00:23John was giving a driving lesson to his 17-year-old daughter Maisie and was sitting in the front
00:27passenger seat of their Toyota when a trailer full of soil disconnected from the tractor
00:32and hit the car.
00:33The court heard that in the UK, vehicles which travel on public highways on short distances
00:38for agricultural use and have a maximum speed of 25 miles per hour are exempt from any periodic
00:44technical inspections.
00:46The inquest also heard that similar vehicles in Northern Ireland are required to have a
00:50working trailer breakaway system to stop trailers from rolling away in the event of an unexpected
00:55decoupling.
00:56John's wife, Catherine, said,
00:58We don't want a similar tragedy to happen to anyone else.
01:01We would like to see some changes, ideally to the legislation for agricultural vehicles.
01:06All other vehicles using roads must go through an MOT and technical checks.
01:10I believe all vehicles using roads should have regular checks.
01:17The Met Office has issued a yellow weather alert for Derbyshire warning of possible travel
01:21disruption and power cuts.
01:23The warning for snow and ice comes into effect 7pm this evening and lasts until 10am on Tuesday.
01:29Forecasters say that a period of rain, sleet and snow will occur on Monday evening overnight
01:34into Tuesday and could cause issues in Derbyshire.
01:37The alert says that there is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services
01:41such as mobile phone coverage may be affected.
01:44There is also the potential for some travel disruption with possible delays to journeys
01:48and some road closures.
