Who would win an open quarterback competition a Miami between Jacurri Brown, Reese Poffenbarger, Emory Williams and Judd Anderson?
Transcript
00:00 It did come down to that open competition.
00:01 If Miami doesn't end up adding a veteran like Talia Tungle by Loa,
00:06 who you got between Jakari, Emery, Poff the Magic Dragon, and
00:11 I will even throw Judd Anderson into that mix as well.
00:14 And it is a truth teller Tuesday, my friends.
00:16 Bruce Warner joins us here on Locked on Canes.
00:19 Bruce, are you excited about Locked on Canes?
00:21 >> Another year, man, another year.
00:22 Here we go again.
00:24 Hey, it's exciting.
00:26 Look, we got Orville Redenbacher as our quarterback.
00:28 I mean, what do you want?
00:29 Is that what his name is?
00:32 What the hell is his name?
00:33 >> Reese Poffenbarger, put some respect on that man's name, all right?
00:37 >> Yeah, all right.
00:37 >> And listen, you and I were talking off air yesterday, Bruce.
00:41 Before Cam Ward became the guy everybody wanted in the transfer portal,
00:45 he was an FCS quarterback a couple of years ago.
00:48 >> Right. >> Shador Sanders used to be an FCS
00:51 quarterback.
00:52 You pointed out to me that Kurt Warner was bagging gross reason.
00:55 He ended up being a pro football Hall of Famer.
00:57 >> Yes, so who knows?
00:59 I've never seen him.
01:00 I mean, I did see some film yesterday, and I was watching it at the same time my
01:05 friend Mark Caesar was watching it.
01:07 And Mark says to me, hey man, look at that pocket.
01:11 I don't see anybody chasing him.
01:12 Actually, he said, I don't see any brothers chasing him.
01:15 So I don't know the level of competition up there, but
01:19 they're bringing him in.
01:21 He's got a shot.
01:22 All three of these guys have a shot, I believe.
01:25 Of course, two of them have been here and they know Dawson's system.
01:29 But yeah, it's Albany film, I know what it is.
01:32 But I wanna give a shout out to this Jeff Lins ELO 224 tour,
01:36 cuz I'm a big ELO fan, so whoever that is.
01:39 >> Yeah, I saw him in the live chat.
01:40 Here he is, Jeff Lins ELO.
01:42 >> Whoever he is, man, I like that music.
01:43 And they have a new tour that just came out from a couple weeks ago that's live.
01:47 I've been watching it on demand.
01:48 It's pretty cool, I like it.
01:50 Love that band.
01:51 Anyway, so now we have three guys in there.
01:54 One coming off a bad injury, Emory Williams, but it's not-
01:58 >> He was non-throwing arm though,
02:00 could have worked.
02:00 >> Yeah, that shouldn't be a problem at all.
02:02 >> Yeah. >> And then we've got a guy who we
02:04 thought was leaving the entire season.
02:06 And Jokori had a pretty damn good ball game.
02:09 Didn't have any help from his wide receiver.
02:11 Number three, dropped that right in his hand.
02:14 I saw that ball, I saw this frozen rope go right to his hands.
02:18 >> It was perfect.
02:19 >> And all the things that we were worried about, getting the ball deep,
02:21 having some touch, right in his hands and he dropped it.
02:24 And he had a horrible game to Kobe George.
02:28 But Jokori did well, now he's in the mix.
02:31 Now he's got the big upside.
02:33 And I saw your little poll that he's kind of pretty much far ahead,
02:37 because nobody really knows Reese.
02:39 But we'll see, at least there's competition in the camp.
02:43 I wouldn't be surprised if any one of those three wins.
02:46 None of the three would surprise me at all.
02:49 >> Yeah, and listen, I will note that at this time, we don't know if these guys
02:54 will be competing for the starting job or they might be competing for the backup job.
02:58 Because I talked about this yesterday on the episode where we introduced
03:02 Reese Poffenbarger to Miami fans after he committed to the U.
03:06 And Miami, they would still, I believe, I have reason to believe Miami would still
03:11 take the opportunity to add someone like to Talia Tongo by Lola if they can do that.
03:16 But they weren't just gonna wait,
03:18 because we don't know how long the NCAA is gonna take to decide on his waiver.
03:22 And there's a chance that they could decide against giving him the waiver.
03:25 So Miami had to go out and get somebody.
03:27 Now, with Reese Poffenbarger, I definitely see a lot of upside.
03:31 And I think he can definitely compete, whether it's for the starting job or
03:33 the backup job.
03:35 But these are the quarterbacks that are in Miami's room right now.
03:38 And I put it out there on our Locked on Canes X account, put this poll out there.
03:43 Who would win an open quarterback competition to be the starter in 2024
03:47 between Ja'Kari Brown, Reese Poffenbarger, Emory Williams, and Judd Anderson?
03:52 Obviously, the incoming true freshman didn't get a whole lot of love there.
03:56 And Bruce, most of the people out there say Ja'Kari.
04:00 He definitely, when it comes to the physical tools, being 6'5",
04:04 around 225, he's got that running ability that he has.
04:09 He's got a very strong arm.
04:10 He's working on the accuracy and the timing.
04:13 He's clearly made some progress between what I saw from him in spring football and
04:16 the fall scrimmage between what I saw from him in that Rutgers game.
04:19 Ja'Kari is developing.
04:21 He's getting a lot better.
04:22 He's got just tremendous upside, Bruce.
04:24 I would also say Poffenbarger has a lot of upside, but
04:27 since he's coming from FCS, he's not gonna get as much respect.
04:30 But then with Emory Williams, I'm not gonna sleep on Emory either.
04:33 If I had to pick one out of these three or four, I would probably lean to Ja'Kari
04:37 Brown as well to win that job as most of the people have voted on.
04:41 But I'm also, I'm not sleeping on Emory because he gets thrown into the fire last
04:46 year, Bruce, against the two best defenses Miami faced.
04:50 The two games that he started last year were against Clemson and
04:53 against Florida State.
04:54 They kept the playbook very buttoned up for him.
04:57 Didn't have very good completion percentages or stats, but he played with
05:00 a lot of poise and he made some big time throws in both of those games.
