00:00 There's been more Twitter drama that will make you question if any adults are in the
00:04 room, AEW have had a backstage overhaul, and WWE just saw a shock title change.
00:11 I'm Luke Owen and this is the WrestleTalk News.
00:20 Like the red hot chilli peppers in 1995, it's been one hot minute since I was last behind
00:25 this desk reading from this teleprompter about wrestling news to you fine folk.
00:29 A lot of craziness has happened since then.
00:31 A lot of OG staffers have left AEW as the company moves into a new era, Hiroshi Tanahashi
00:37 was made President of New Japan - speaking of which, Dolph Ziggler and Matt Riddle have
00:42 both made deals with New Japan - and The Rock returned to WWE, seemingly to put a stop to
00:48 Cody Rhodes' story.
00:50 But I'm not here to talk about any of that sort of news.
00:54 No, because the news that has gotten the wrestling world chattering today is…
00:58 Grown men arguing on Twitter about wins and losses.
01:02 Happy New Year to me, I guess.
01:05 To give you some context around all of this for those of you who have been blissfully
01:08 under rocks for the last 48 hours, on Monday's episode of Raw - a very good show it must
01:12 be said - one of the more baffling moments was when Seth Rollins started a mini-feud
01:17 with new challenger for the World Heavyweight Championship Jinder Mahal.
01:22 This will lead to a match next week between the two for the title, and it feels like a
01:25 bit of filler as we head into Rumble season.
01:28 Just something for Seth to do while all of the other top names are busy doing Rumble
01:33 things.
01:34 The problem is, as many pointed out, is that Jinder Mahal doesn't exactly feel like a
01:38 top title fighter - given that he's only been on TV a handful of times in the last
01:43 year or so as a manager, got chumpetised by The Rock the week previous where the joke
01:48 was, "wasn't it silly, this man was once WWE Champion" and he last won a match on
01:53 Raw or Smackdown on July 3rd, 2022.
01:59 That was 556 days ago.
02:02 To give it even more context, the last time Jinder Mahal won a match on Raw or Smackdown,
02:09 Vince McMahon was still booking the show.
02:12 It did feel like an odd choice, Dan Layton and I discussed it at length on the WrestleTalk
02:16 podcast yesterday, but the reaction to it was more muted than one would expect - especially
02:21 considering that, you know, we all remember how bad of a time this was.
02:26 No one was truly angry online about the idea of Jinder Mahal getting a world title shot,
02:32 even though it is a world title shot that makes little logical sense.
02:36 We didn't get any angry ultra chats on the WrestleTalk podcast, no one was really mad
02:41 about it in the live chat, if anything everyone was quite thrilled about it.
02:44 But one man who did get his heckles up about it was AEW CEO Tony Khan.
02:50 And the reason Khan got his knickers in a twist is that just a few days prior, he came
02:54 under fire for booking something similar.
02:57 On Saturday's edition of AEW Collision, Hook laid out a challenge for new world champion
03:02 Samoa Joe, which prompted a slew of social media backlash against All Elite Wrestling
03:06 for booking a lower card guy like Hook against a top guy like Samoa Joe.
03:11 We did get a few mildly angry ultra chats on the WrestleTalk podcast, and we had way
03:16 more mad about it in the live chats.
03:18 To be fair, we did a poll where 55% were excited about the idea of Hook challenging Joe, and
03:22 35% were on the fence.
03:25 So with all of that context is why Tony Khan decided to have a total meltdown on Twitter.
03:30 And now, AEW and WWE wrestlers, as well as other wrestling media, are all getting involved.
03:39 It all started with a tweet from Khan, who wrote, "A double standard.
03:43 Hook 28-1 career record on winning street calls out the champ a logical challenge.
03:48 #XboxOnlineOutrage Jinder has lost every single match he's in for the past year immediately
03:54 gets title shot where is the rage?"
03:58 That feels like it should be the end of it, but Tony went looking for more.
04:01 Earlier in the day, Raj Giri had posted what he felt was a defence of Jinder vs. Seth by
04:07 tweeting that they "once had a match in NXT".
04:10 A compelling defence there, Raj.
04:12 To which USA Network, the home of WWE Raw, jokingly replied, "what was the cage match
04:18 rating?"
04:19 Well let me tell you, USA Network social media manager, it was… let me just find it for
04:24 you here… 6.27.
04:26 Which is not a great result, let's be honest.
04:30 This is, of course, a shot at those who value in-ring wrestling over soap opera storytelling,
04:35 as apparently you can only like either in-ring work or storytelling in wrestling, and not
04:42 some weird combination of the two.
04:44 TK reposted this tweet arguing, "A moral victory for USA is one more win than their
04:49 world title challenger Jinder Mahal has had in the past 364 days because it's been literally
04:54 a full year since he won a match.
04:57 You really put AEW in our place getting Jinder Mahal in a big match on your TV show.
05:02 Do it more often."
05:03 This is where other people started to get involved.
05:07 Because apart from either liking in-ring work or storytelling, you also have to fall into
05:11 one of two camps.
05:13 Wins and losses matter, or wins and losses don't matter.
05:17 For decades, WWE has pushed the narrative that wins and losses don't matter.
05:21 You can lose a bunch of matches and it doesn't affect the wrestler or the storylines you're
05:26 doing on TV.
05:27 When AEW launched in 2019, they wanted to do the opposite, even implementing a ranking
05:31 system that was based on wins and losses to determine who gets title shots.
05:35 This was dropped a few years later when it became apparent that it was difficult to keep
05:38 up and fans complained online that it never made much sense.
05:42 This was Jonathan Coachman's point, as he tweeted in response to TK, "We also used
05:46 to get amused at fans who counted wins like wrestlers earned them.
05:50 Hell, if Vince wanted, I could have been world champion.
05:53 But the storyline didn't support it.
05:55 It's about the story, clearly, not wins in a predetermined space.
05:59 Thought a boss would understand that."
06:01 This prompted a reply from a wrestling fan by the name of Mickey, who pointed out that
06:05 Tony Khan did the same thing recently with Abaddon - arguing they were given a title
06:10 shot despite being off TV for over a year.
06:13 And here, like clockwork, is where Eric Bischoff enters our story.
06:17 He'd already reposted Khan's original tweet with a clown emoji and then - clearly
06:21 looking for things to argue about on Twitter - reposted a tweet he was not tagged in saying,
06:25 "Hey @TK, is this true or is it a bot?"
06:29 Of course, it's not true.
06:31 Mickey ignored the fact that Abaddon was off TV due to injury, and when they came back
06:35 won a number one contenders match for the title shot - which is what Tony Khan replied
06:39 with.
06:40 It's always funny when Bischoff gets involved in AEW Twitter drama as one of the arguments
06:44 against TK's Twitter behaviour is that it isn't befitting of a wrestling promoter
06:49 to act this way on social media.
06:51 After all, Vince McMahon never did this when he was in charge, and Triple H isn't doing
06:55 it either.
06:56 No, instead they did it on TV during the Monday Night War - stopping their own programming
07:01 to take shots at the competition, with skits like Billionaire Ted or driving a truck to
07:06 the opposition show to "invade" and boast about how few people were attending it.
07:11 Eric Bischoff also did it himself on WCW television, once challenging Vince McMahon to shop for
07:17 a PPV for a wrestling match in an effort to boost the buy rates and bump their TV ratings.
07:22 He read out the results of taped WWE shows on his show.
07:28 This is what wrestling promoters did in the days before social media.
07:32 Social media just changed the promoting game.
07:35 And it's not exclusive to wrestling.
07:36 Of course Pepsi ran anti-Coca-Cola campaigns, Burger King ran anti-McDonald's campaigns.
07:42 When you're in second place, you punch up to first.
07:45 But if you're in first, you don't acknowledge second.
07:49 When Eyebill of WrestlePuris pointed out the hypocrisy of Bischoff's tweets, Eric said
07:53 that it wasn't the same deal as when he did it, he was head to head with WWE and without
07:58 dirt sheets.
07:59 I'm not sure what point he's making either.
08:02 Something about Dave Meltzer being on the payroll or something equally idiotic.
08:05 And then wrestlers - including Jinder Mahal - got involved.
08:09 Corey Graves tweeted in support of Mahal simply saying "Jinder Rules" which apparently
08:13 popped Bully Ray.
08:15 Dax Harwood seemingly in response tweeted "Hook Rules" and Anthony Bowens also tweeted
08:19 in support of Hook.
08:21 Dax also replied to Bischoff pointing out the hypocrisy of his criticisms.
08:24 Jinder Mahal himself had the best tweet in all of this however, simply posting "Who
08:29 the f*** is Hook?"
08:30 A lot of this does feel like wrestlers having fun, especially with Dax tweeting in all caps
08:35 "WRESTLING IS BACK BABY LET'S F***ING GO!
08:38 @AEWWRESTLERS ACTING UP ON TWITTER BETTER CALL DANIELSON!"
08:41 But one guy who didn't seem to be taking it in all good fun was NXT's Edris NFA,
08:46 who replied to Tony's original tweet asking him to "shut the f*** up".
08:50 Both Jinder and Edifay deleted their tweets.
08:53 So what did we learn from all of this?
08:56 Well apart from the usual lesson that Twitter is an awful place, nothing is achieved in
08:59 all of this and nothing will be learned.
09:01 I actually agree with Tony, Jinder getting a title shot with no heating up isn't great
09:05 booking and it's not comparable to Hook getting a title shot.
09:08 But he's not changing any minds either.
09:10 In this bizarre tribalistic timeline we've found ourselves in, if you have planted your
09:14 flag in WWE's ground, you're not going to read Tony's tweets and think "huh,
09:18 maybe he's right".
09:19 But I'm not going to watch WWE next week and I'm going to watch Dynamite instead.
09:24 Similarly, his tweets aren't appealing to the mainstream casual fan because they're
09:28 not getting involved or seeking out Twitter drama.
09:31 Only established wrestling fans are, and as we've discussed, they've already made
09:35 up their minds.
09:36 It's not like WWE Gareth is going to be on the Dynamite train.
09:40 It's not going to change Eric's mind either as he'll just make a tweet that he doesn't
09:43 like his hair.
09:44 And if you point out that wrestling promoters have always done this, it was just on TV and
09:48 not on social media, that doesn't change any minds either.
09:51 So what did we learn?
09:53 Probably nothing because I also made that point.
09:55 But you know what, sticking with AEW for a moment, and as I mentioned at the top of this
09:59 video, there has been some backstage overhauls within the company over the last few weeks
10:03 and months.
10:04 QT Marshall announced that he would be leaving the company so he can focus on being a full
10:07 time wrestler.
10:08 Their live events and touring Vice President Raphael Murphy also stepped down, as did the
10:13 head of merchandising Dana Macy, who is also the wife of Matt Jackson of The Young Bucks.
10:18 And in the first hire since they all stepped away, AEW brought in WWE's former Regional
10:24 Director of Live Events, Kosher Irby, to be the company's new COO.
10:29 Always getting the ex-WWE guys, why can't you build your own stars?
10:32 Fightful's Lake reported that the news was a "possible COO role" and that was later
10:37 confirmed by Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer.
10:40 Sean Ross Alper Fightful also noted that it was an "important internal hire".
10:44 And finally last night's NXT saw a shock title change, as Dragon Lee was able to get
10:48 his visa situation handled to defend the NXT North American Championship against Lexus
10:53 King, the former Brian Pillman Jr. in AEW.
10:55 Always getting the ex-AEW guys, why can't you build your own stars?
11:00 That was sarcasm.
11:01 Following a successful championship defence, Lee was confronted by Oba Femi, who cashed
11:05 in his Breakout Tournament win to get a shot at Dragon Lee for the title, which he then
11:10 won just over a minute later.
11:12 Elsewhere on the show, the teams of Nathan Frazier and Axiom and Baron Corbin and Braun
11:16 Breaker advanced in the Dusty Classic, Cora Jade beat Gigi Dolan, The Family retained
11:20 their tag titles over OTM and Blair Davenport beat Nikita Lyons after attacking her before
11:26 the show.
11:27 Live!
11:28 Valkyrie also announced that a 20-woman battle royal will take place to crown a new number
11:31 one contender, which will become a Fatal 4-Way when the last four women remain.
11:35 TNA announced their return and this extra stip gets added on to another stip.
11:39 Coincidence?
11:40 I think not.
11:41 Look, we have been overwhelmed by the love and support the latest episode of TLC has
11:46 had where we countdown our worst entrance themes.
11:49 My list is impeccable, so go give it a watch if you haven't already.
11:53 It's on screen right now.
