00:03 And then frankly, out of nowhere,
00:05 the news broke last night.
00:07 Nick Saban retiring as the head coach of Alabama football.
00:11 After 17 years in Tuscaloosa,
00:15 28 years as a college football head coach,
00:18 including stops at Toledo, Michigan State, LSU,
00:22 and of course, 17 years in Tuscaloosa
00:25 at the helm of Alabama,
00:27 the GOAT, the greatest of all time.
00:29 As a head college football coach has now stepped away.
00:33 Nick Saban retiring after 17 seasons
00:36 as Alabama's head coach.
00:38 And Nick Saban was perfect for college football.
00:40 Like everywhere he went, right?
00:41 You forget about the Michigan State days,
00:42 but I know a lot of people that are watching now,
00:44 still younger people, like,
00:45 "Oh, he won a national championship at LSU?"
00:48 Yes, he was that dominant.
00:50 Of course, the only thing he didn't really succeed in
00:52 was being a head coach in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins.
00:54 You might say to yourself,
00:55 "Well, maybe he's retiring from college football
00:57 "and wants to go try it at the pros."
00:59 That's not his gig here.
01:00 You know why Nick Saban was fantastic?
01:02 Because yes, he was an unbelievable X and Os person here.
01:05 He had the ear of everybody.
01:07 You want to pick up, "Hey, look,
01:08 "I'm struggling with this three-four defense."
01:09 Bill Belichick would call him and fly down
01:11 and they'd have lunch and talk about schemes.
01:13 He was an unbelievable ambassador to college football,
01:16 but also he was the single best recruiter
01:18 out there on the market.
01:19 That was his edge.
01:21 People sort of forget this.
01:22 Like, if you're looking at the Alabama history
01:24 under Bale Bryant, they were unbelievable.
01:26 They were dominant.
01:26 They were recruiting machines.
01:27 This was before the integration of college football.
01:30 Then throughout the '80s,
01:31 they did recapture a little bit in the early '90s
01:33 with the National Championship,
01:34 which they beat Miami in the Sugar Bowl.
01:36 But after that, it was a lot of,
01:37 "Oh, Alabama's never gonna regain anything."
01:39 Like, Nick Saban didn't step into a stacked USC program
01:43 or a stacked Ohio State program
01:45 and just take over the helm like, "Oh, this is easy."
01:47 He had to rebuild Alabama into an absolute national power
01:51 and he did that here.
01:52 So whoever's gonna get that next Alabama job,
01:54 you're gonna step into the shoes of Nick Saban.
01:56 It's gonna be really hard to replicate
01:58 all those national championships
01:59 and SEC championships and winning seasons here.
02:02 That's going to be tough.
02:03 But for Nick Saban overall, I truly believe,
02:06 and we don't get to see this,
02:07 he's very, very good with the media.
02:10 And once you put him up there,
02:11 I don't care if he's gonna be in the booth
02:13 as a color guy, a pregame show guy,
02:15 you're gonna wanna hear what Nick Saban has to say.
02:18 And it's the best transition.
02:19 I did everything I could for college football and Alabama.
02:22 I'm gonna step away a legend
02:23 with maybe the best singular coach
02:26 in the history of that sport.
02:27 And then I'm gonna enjoy the rest of my years here
02:29 talking football on sets,
02:30 working two to three days a week
02:32 and just chopping it up with everybody.
02:33 He's gonna live the perfect life if he already hadn't.
