00:00 To address the many students who are struggling or unable to read,
00:05 Deped launched today's Catch Up Friday.
00:08 Chino Gaston is on the show.
00:10 Every Friday, when this is heard in San Roque Elementary School in Marikina City,
00:18 students are stopping whatever they are doing to read.
00:25 This is a tribute to their 30-minute Catch Up Fridays,
00:30 where they are reminded to catch up on reading to those who are still not very good.
00:34 The drop everything and read that Deped implemented is not new.
00:41 Actually, it's been a long time, that's why it was enhanced.
00:45 In Pinahan Elementary School in Quezon City,
00:48 we witnessed the school district supervisor in their Catch Up Friday.
00:54 12 sections from kindergarten to grade 6 are considered remedial
01:00 because of their reading skills.
01:03 Some grade 6 students are attending grade 1 classes because their level is still there.
01:10 Now we have to start from zero.
01:12 We really catered to non-readers because this is now the effect of the pandemic.
01:21 There are many learning loss, especially on literacy and numeracy.
01:26 Grade 1 students in Samal North Elementary School in Samal Bataan also had a reading loss.
01:32 Even in other provinces.
01:36 If we will prove that reading is included in subjects where Filipino students improved
01:42 according to the 2022 Program for International Student Assessment or PISA.
01:46 But we still need to catch up because the Philippines is sixth in the 81 provinces.
01:54 This is still needed for higher education.
01:58 We are focusing on the foundations of human reading and this Catch Up Friday is a part of this curriculum
02:03 to give all of our learners an opportunity to start loving reading.
02:09 An impact assessment will be conducted at the end of the year to let the DepEd know if the Catch Up Friday Program needs to be continued.
02:18 For GMA Integrated News, who is the winner? 24 hours.
