Howe gives injury updates amidst FFP issues
Newcastle United Head Coach, Eddie Howe has provided an update on several of his injured playing squad ahead of the visit of Manchester City to St. James’ Park. 00:30 Howe addressed the media and gave several injury updates. He spoke first of Joe Linton
00:36 who went off at the start of the second half against Sunderland and confirmed that the
00:41 Brazilian would be out for a minimum of six weeks in what is another huge blow for Newcastle
00:48 United.
00:49 Elliot Anderson and Joe Willock were not said to be returning any time soon either as the
00:54 pair recover from a back fracture and achilles problem respectively. Howe also made clear
01:00 that Harvey Barnes was getting closer and running on grass but he would still have to
01:05 wait for his return.
01:07 Callum Wilson is predicted to return at the end of the month with Howe commenting that
01:12 Jacob Murphy has returned to training and is close to getting back in the matchday squad
01:18 following his shoulder problem.
01:20 Newcastle's current injury list is 10 and that figure does not stand to improve until
01:25 at least the end of January. Many have argued that new signings are needed to bolster the
01:30 ranks but this will prove difficult thanks to CEO Darren Eales' prognosis regarding
01:36 financial fair play.
01:40 Eales confirmed that Newcastle United's revenue has increased by 39% on its 2022 revenue to
01:48 a total of around £250 million being brought into the club. However, in the last four transfer
01:55 windows Newcastle have spent in excess of £400 million and only brought in around £23
02:03 million for Alan St Maximan and £15 million for Chris Wood. Eales therefore made clear
02:10 that in some cases Newcastle may need to sell to buy.
02:15 This isn't an entirely alien concept however. Liverpool sold Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona
02:21 fetching over £100 million allowing them to bring in Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker
02:26 the goalkeeper.
02:28 Manchester City have continually sold big assets including Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez,
02:34 Ilkay Gundogan and Cole Palmer with Tottenham selling Harry Kane and Aston Villa selling
02:40 Jack Realish. All of these sales allowed for wiggle room in terms of financial fair play,
02:46 something Newcastle United may need to do with some of their big name players.
02:53 Newcastle are not out of the woods just yet but victory against Manchester City would
02:58 go a long way to improving the situation further.
