00:00 A Filipino cake artist who currently represents the Philippines in a global bake-off,
00:06 The Greatest Baker, will be joining us this morning to tell us how she started her journey here.
00:12 And to share her inspiring story, we will talk this morning to the most talented cake artist,
00:19 Michelle Angela Vita-Hoy. Good morning and welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines.
00:25 Good morning!
00:28 Michelle, can you tell us how you started baking and what inspired you to join The Greatest Baker?
00:39 Actually, I came to Hawaii not as a baker. I didn't know anything about baking.
00:47 I just happened to be a self-taught baker. I didn't go to a school for baking.
01:02 I went to a culinary school.
01:03 That's amazing! So you didn't know anything about baking.
01:07 How did you learn? YouTube videos? Books? What was your method of learning?
01:16 When I first came here, I noticed that there's no one around.
01:22 There's nothing to do. It's boring.
01:24 So I just watched Cake Boss on Netflix from episode 1.
01:30 I watched the entire episode from the start.
01:37 That's when I had the urge to do it.
01:43 I thought that it's lucky for her family that the cakes are this beautiful on their birthdays.
01:49 So I decided to do it for my son and my friends here in Hawaii.
01:54 That's fast!
01:57 The cakes look so good.
02:00 Yes!
02:01 What's the hardest part of being a self-taught baker?
02:06 How did you overcome these challenges?
02:11 I didn't have any equipment.
02:14 I started with a barbecue stick and pizza cutter.
02:22 I told my family that I can use baking supplies for my birthday and Christmas.
02:33 That's how I started. It's hard at first because you don't know anything.
02:41 But I overcame it.
02:43 If you're used to it, you'll get used to it.
02:48 And you'll improve.
02:50 Michelle, we heard that you used to be an employee in the Department of Energy.
02:58 How did you face the challenges of your career shift to become a world-class cake artist?
03:04 Tell us about it.
03:05 I was in the Department of Energy in the Consumer Welfare.
03:13 We were dealing with complaints from our fellow Filipinos about energy.
03:22 We were also promoting DOE programs.
03:26 Like Pantawid Pasada, I was one of the pioneers of that program.
03:32 It was 12 or 11 years ago.
03:34 It's amazing to see that their program is still going strong.
03:39 I was in the Consumer Welfare.
03:43 We were creating TV ads.
03:46 I was very creative back then.
03:50 When I came to Hawaii, I was stuck with my creativity.
03:56 I needed to express it.
03:58 So I expressed it in my cakes.
04:01 That's amazing.
04:03 What does the role of the Greatest Baker mean to you?
04:09 And how do you show it in your cakes?
04:13 The role of the Greatest Baker is worldwide.
04:20 I'm the only Filipino in our group.
04:24 My opponents are from different countries.
04:27 So it's an honor for our country to have a Filipino
04:31 who is known as the Greatest Baker in the world.
04:35 It's like Miss Universe pageant.
04:37 You enter the top five if you have a high vote.
04:43 I feel like I'm Michelle D.
