Should Giants Tag and Trade Saquon Barkley?
Transcript
00:00 Last year as we know Saquon Barkley got the franchise tag and the Giants after they reached
00:06 You know, they hit a stalemate with him. They basically told Saquon
00:09 We're fine having you play on the franchise tag. You don't want to you know
00:14 Negotiate we're fine carrying you on the franchise tag
00:18 So that's what they ended up doing. They had the space to do it
00:22 This year given the needs that they have given the position they have and the ripple effect
00:28 Which I'm going to get to in a moment
00:30 They don't have that flexibility in my opinion and here's why
00:34 All right
00:36 Here's what I think is going to happen
00:38 Saquon has already said that he would not welcome a second tag
00:44 Saquon has also if you listen to him
00:48 He has sounded like he's resigned to the fact that he might not be a giant for the future now to be clear
00:55 He still wants to be a giant for life
00:58 I think the Giants would still like to resign him, but they're not gonna spend an arm and a leg to keep him
01:05 so
01:07 If Saquon views himself worth X number of dollars and the Giants view him view him as worth a wide number of dollars
01:14 Guess what? We're gonna have a stalemate
01:16 So if you're the Giants, you just don't let Saquon who arguably was your best player on offense last year
01:25 You just don't let him walk out the door and test free agency. No
01:28 what you look to do is
01:31 Come the deadline for the tagging window if no deal is reached
01:36 You put the tag on him that stops obviously teams from coming after him and making him an offer sheet
01:43 Then you continue to negotiate with him
01:47 Maybe through you know the end of March or you know
01:51 Right up into the draft or you set a cutoff point, but that cutoff point has to be before the draft
01:56 Okay. Now if you can do that
01:59 In the meantime if you get a deal done great if you don't get a deal done
02:05 Then you entertain trade offers and you say okay. Look we'll do a tag and trade
02:12 Well, we go to say Quan and say okay. Hey say Quan
02:15 We've got team X who's willing to give you a deal closer to what you are looking for
02:21 Sign the tag because remember teams can't trade players unless there's a signed contract in place the tag gets signed
02:29 the trade gets made and
02:32 The Giants who have four out of their seven draft picks this year and the top 70
02:40 Maybe they get another one. Maybe they get a fifth one to add to the mix
02:45 All right, I'm not saying they're gonna get a number one pick for say Quan
02:48 I don't know that they've got a number two
02:50 But if they can get a third round pick from a team that needs to running back, why not?
02:54 so
02:56 You get more assets because remember the Giants aren't going to get
03:00 Any comp picks this year. They did too much in free agency last year to get any comp picks
03:05 so
03:08 If you're Joe Shane you say to yourself, okay
03:11 We're not gonna build around say Quan
03:13 We've got to build around a quarterback whoever that quarterback is gonna be whether it be Daniel Jones or somebody else
03:18 We'll talk about that in a moment
03:20 So what's the point in continuing to carry say Quan on the franchise tag? I think it would be
03:26 You know kind of cruel to say Quan if the Giants said, okay
03:31 You know what? We're gonna leave you sitting on the tag until the very left, you know to the July deadline
03:36 I don't think that makes sense for the Giants
03:39 I think for a team that has a lot of needs and not a whole lot of resources like they might have had last year
03:44 Look to move them while you can
