00:00 Issa Rae and the cast of Rapshit are giving their hot takes for this year's Grammy Awards.
00:05 The trio, including Rapshit stars Chameleon and Ida Osman, sat down with The Hollywood
00:09 Reporter to discuss their connection to this year's nominees and season two of their HBO
00:14 Max hit before giving their unfiltered predictions as to who will take each category at this
00:19 year's Grammys.
00:20 "For that, I want Barbie World to win, because I didn't have to dance to that.
00:25 I want my boss's movie to win."
00:27 Rae has always used music as a storytelling tool, from her groundbreaking series Insecure
00:32 to her current adventure Rapshit.
00:34 "Miami bitches know fake shit.
00:35 Whole stuff like a facelift.
00:36 Every time we hit some stages, you know we gon' be the favorites."
00:37 "Music is an extra cast member on the call sheet.
00:43 Music elevates the storytelling of everything."
00:47 So it's hard not to think of Rae when you look at some of the nominees at the 2024 Grammy
00:51 Awards.
00:52 SZA is the top contender with nine nominations and had a majority of her acclaimed debut
00:57 album played on season two of Insecure.
01:00 Victoria Monet, who has seven nominations, helped close out season three with her track
01:04 "The Glow."
01:05 And Leon Thomas, who was nominated for Best R&B Song for SZA's "Snooze," played the role
01:10 of Eddie, aka Neighbor Bay, on the show, as well as many others who have been featured
01:14 on Insecure or Rapshit that are nominated at the February 4th award show.
01:19 "It's an honor that Insecure has been able to feature so many artists, giving them their
01:24 first stinks.
01:25 We've done the same on Rapshit and to see them be awarded and acknowledged at the Grammys,
01:34 it just, you know, I feel proud of it."
01:36 The trio then dived into several categories, giving their thoughts on who will come out
01:40 on top, including Album of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Rap Song, and more.
01:45 "I love Lana Del Rey.
01:46 I'm like, 'Where you been girl?'
01:47 But I don't know, I think I'm gonna give it to SZA."
01:48 "All of these songs are TikTok songs.
01:49 You cannot avoid these on the internet."
01:50 "I love Janelle Monáe.
01:51 I love her.
01:52 I love her.
01:53 I love her.
01:54 I love her."
01:55 "I love Janelle Monáe's album, which is phenomenal as well."
01:56 "Yes, it's a freaky album."
01:57 "Yeah, come on, show us some more T's."
01:58 There's no need to explain the connection between music and storytelling in their HBO
02:06 Max series Rapshit, which centers on two Miami-based rappers who try to make it in the music industry.
02:12 Rey explains that she created the show after being inspired by the female rap movement,
02:17 as well as listening to the greats like Queen Latifah, Salt-N-Pepa, and Lil' Kim.
02:21 "This moment in particular felt so special and it felt unique in a way that there was
02:26 an abundance of female rappers all at the same time just working and thriving."
02:33 They also dive into season two, which Rey says echoes the current landscape of female
02:37 rap.
02:38 "It kind of complements season two, which I'm really excited to get in the way that
02:43 Shauna and Mia have a beef and have had to come together.
02:47 There are just so many elements that mimic real life that we imagine real life female
02:52 rappers have had to go through that make it really special and unique."
02:56 Elsewhere, Chameleon and Ossman opened up about what it's been like having Rey as their
02:59 badass boss.
03:00 "It's like so crazy watching her work.
03:04 Sometimes you think she has a twin because she's like everywhere, but she's like Santa
03:07 Claus.
03:08 How can you be everywhere?"
03:09 "I want to be like her.
03:12 She's a f*cking mogul, man."
03:14 "I would just let Issa and Miley sometimes play on mute while I wrote.
03:18 I just love looking at y'all.
03:20 I want to be just like her."
