00:00Before we get into the movie though, we have to talk about music. So obviously you're an R&B legend and another one is being honored tonight, Usher.
00:08So what does that mean to the culture?
00:11It means everything. First of all, you know, there's been a few moments where you see somebody being honored or something significant happening for them.
00:22And then you could find yourself going, oh, that's great. But then when you see moments like this happen, it feels like it's long overdue.
00:31Thirty years, Usher's been at it. He's put it all on the line. He's kept us all entertained.
00:38He's my brother. I love him. I'm the biggest Usher fan, period.
00:42He's made a difference in my world. When I first got on after the Coke commercial, you know, he let me play opposite him.
00:49And it's my way video. So we shot that here, downtown L.A.
00:53So I couldn't be more proud of all that he is, all that he continues to do and be and how he has figured out a way to reinvent himself over all these years.
01:03So what's your favorite song by him?
01:06I got too many. You know, listen, I'm a I'm a A-side and a B-side Usher.
01:13You know what I'm saying? So, man, my way.
01:20What y'all know about a Super Mario? Come on. It's too many. It's too many. Too many.
01:27Confessions. Yes. Oh, God. Too many. Too many.
01:32Tell me about you guys' upcoming movie and the relationship that you guys curated to be able to bring that forth on screen.
01:39Well, there's a film which everyone is saying this is the most important film that's historically based out of the West Coast.
01:51This is a historical moment that took place on the West, just like N.W.A. and Compton straight out of Compton.
01:581992, April 29th, when the Rodney King verdict came out and they let all those officers, white officers off for for damn near killing that man.
02:09I believe he may have died and came back to life. It was determined to snatch the soul out that black man.
02:16And we did a movie called 1992 based on a heist that took place while the whole city was distracted from looting and rioting and burning down.
02:27And for me, it's a full circle moment because I was living in Watts.
02:31I was in the looting and rioting and we got Snoop Dogg on board as a producer.
02:36And this is Chris, who played my son in the 1992 movie.
02:40And it's got Ray Liotta. Rest in peace. Scott Eastwood, directed by Ariel Broman.
02:46And it's dropping August 30th, Friday. And we're excited. Lionsgate is going all out for us.
02:56I learned to stay in it. You know, it's easy to get distracted.
03:01It's easy to think that things should happen faster than they are happening.
03:06And I learned to just be patient and have fun with the process and play a little, you know, stretch yourself, work on your craft, stay on your grind.
03:14And it'll all happen the way it's supposed to.
03:17Raji is hosting tonight and you worked with her, of course, on Baby Boy.
03:21And I know you had to have seen the movie as well. So what does that mean to see a fellow actress, a creative step into this space of hosting?
03:29I'll take this one first. Baby Boy is a classic. Let me tell you something.
03:34It's a classic and it influenced the culture through and through.
03:38Again, they still play this movie about 120 times a day on BET.
03:42And so if you haven't seen Baby Boy, you missing out.
03:47Yeah, I think we got one. And Baby Boy.
03:54But here's some perspective. Rest in peace to John Singleton, who put me and Taraji on.
04:02John Singleton is responsible for so many significant black writers, directors, producers, actors, hair, makeup, wardrobe.
04:12Ruth Carter has won two Oscars. She was our stylist for Baby Boy.
04:17She was our stylist for Four Brothers, also directed by John Singleton.
04:22Taraji, nothing about her career surprises me.
04:26She's always been a star since the moment we met and auditioned together.
04:30And just beyond blessed to just witness her grace, her magic, her being so fierce.
04:38I mean, this woman came from D.C. with 13 dollars and her son and her father of her child had just got killed.
04:48So for her to be here, she is literally the walking, breathing manifestation of determination and and being overly ambitious and determined to win.
05:00So all of it makes me happy. Very honored to be here.
05:05Very happy to call her my sister. 1992 is coming.
05:09And rumor has it, Hollywood reporter rumor has it the trail is about to drop.
05:17I can't tell y'all when, but it's like it feels very, very.
05:24Ray Liotta, we love you. Rest in peace.
