00:00 He's regarded as one of the greatest painters of the 20th century.
00:04 Yet for years, Pierre Bonard had disappeared from the radar.
00:09 That was until very recently when a film was released,
00:12 dedicated to his life, starring Cécile de France and Vincent Macquain.
00:17 Now museum exhibitions are hosting his works,
00:20 with his art in prestigious publications.
00:23 So why is Pierre Bonnard being rediscovered as a visionary?
00:27 In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, he was a painter out of step with his time.
00:32 Bonnard was certainly not an impressionist like his friend Claude Monet,
00:37 and even less academic as was the fashion at the time in trendy galleries.
00:42 Plump nymphs and immaculate skin were not his thing.
00:46 Instead, he had "marte", his wife and his muse,
00:51 and he showcased her body from every angle.
00:54 Undressed or clothed, "marte" in the bathroom,
00:58 immersed in a bathtub, "marte" in the red dining room,
01:02 with the likeness of her dog.
01:05 Bonnard's world was one of everyday life and everyday scenes,
01:11 which are ultimately universal.
01:14 With Bonnard, everything is fluid.
01:19 It's all about life as we see it today.
01:21 He shows the same experiences we have today with our friends, family and pets.
01:26 Behind his peaceful demeanour, Pierre Bonnard hid his hand well.
01:31 With his powerful colours and absence of perspective, he was way ahead of his time.
01:36 Some even compare his paintings to those of the flamboyant Mark Rothko,
01:40 known also today as a visionary,
01:42 and whose work is currently on display at the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris.
