00:00 Portugal has become an increasingly popular destination over the years.
00:05 While there's a lot to love in cities like Lisbon and Porto, these lesser-known places
00:09 in Portugal are worth traveling to as well.
00:16 Drive about an hour south of Porto and you'll get to the colorful city of Aveiro.
00:21 Thanks to the nearby lagoon, canals flow through the city, similar to Venice or Amsterdam.
00:27 Take a tour of the city on one of the brightly painted boats called Moliseiros.
00:33 Ponte de Lima was founded in 1125, making it one of the oldest towns in Portugal.
00:39 This northern Portuguese community is known for its historic architecture and for being
00:43 a stop along the Portuguese Camino de Santiago.
00:46 One of its most picturesque landmarks is a bridge that spans the width of the Lima River
00:51 and incorporates both Roman and medieval design.
00:54 The Douro River reaches from Porto to central Spain.
00:58 Along its stretch in northern Portugal, you can find the Alto Douro region, which is famous
01:03 for producing port wine since the 18th century.
01:07 The area covers more than 60,000 acres and was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.
01:14 Did you know Portugal is home to one national park?
01:17 It's called Pineda Jerez National Park and is an hour drive north of Porto.
01:21 There's plenty to discover in this nearly 270 square mile park, including waterfalls,
01:26 hot springs, and even granite villages.
01:30 Coimbra was Portugal's capital during medieval times, and its rich history is still worth
01:35 visiting today.
01:37 The Azores Archipelago feels a world away from Portugal, being around 800 miles away
01:43 from the Iberian Peninsula.
01:45 Head to its biggest island, São Miguel, for a taste of some of the best island scenery.
