00:00 Lexi, did you know this past of course year our Polish director Michael Petri
00:05 spent some time in Italy and he wanted to show it off to us with some highlights from his trip.
00:10 You know Brad I did know that and this time he is looking into the secret
00:14 ingredient that makes Italian food taste so good. It's time to take a trip and
00:18 let's go with Michael Petri.
00:22 So just a little over 6,000 miles away from Phoenix lies a beautiful little
00:29 town called Sorrento. Yeah, Sorrento, Italy. It's located just south of Naples,
00:35 Italy on what they call the Sorrentine Peninsula. Its history goes back past 600
00:41 BC and the area has been the favorite vacation spot for both Roman emperors
00:46 all the way up to the current visitors of today and of course me. Yeah, you see
00:53 this is my second visit to Sorrento and I came back to see if what I had
00:59 experienced almost seven years prior to this wasn't just a fluke and since this
01:05 was my second trip a lot of people of course were curious to know what some of
01:09 the big draws were of Sorrento. Well, Sorrento is known for a lot of things.
01:14 The unique European style oceanfronts, old fishing docks where you can still
01:19 see the fishermen tending to their nets, the history and the interesting sites
01:24 that make Sorrento unique and of course the large piazzas that invite you to
01:31 jump into the bustling mix of visitors, locals, shops and beautiful architecture
01:38 that make it feel just so Italian.
01:51 And of course one of the best-known things that happens in Sorrento and
01:55 actually all over Italy for that matter happens when the Sun goes down. The shops
02:01 and restaurants open and the streets and alleyways become alive with people
02:06 getting out enjoying the cool night air and either relaxing or exploring the
02:12 Sorrento nighttime magic. And you have to love the fact that people are here from
02:18 all over the world and what are they doing? Well, a lot of them are shopping, a
02:24 lot of them are just enjoying the beautiful classic Italian architecture,
02:28 the fact that the ocean is right here with all the boats and the docks. But the
02:33 big discovery most people make when they come to Sorrento is the food. I don't
02:39 know maybe the food and of course the pizza just tastes better here. And
02:45 that's where my little quest comes in. You see I grew up in the Chicago area so
02:51 yeah I'm a bit of a pizza snob. I grew up with a lot of pizza snobs. I mean let's
02:56 face it we grew up eating the best pizza on earth. Anyways, about seven years ago
03:01 when I was visiting Sorrento I just happened to try some pizza at a little
03:05 place called Pizzeria Aurora and I'm gonna admit it it might have been some
03:11 of the best pizza I'd ever had in my life. So now I was back to see if maybe I
03:17 had possibly been mistaken. And looking at their pizza it really doesn't look
03:22 like anything special. Some cheese, maybe a little tomatoes, a little basil and it
03:27 was even kind of runny. But this time when I took that bite again I couldn't
03:32 believe what I was experiencing. It was so good just like seven years ago. I mean
03:38 what are they putting in this stuff anyways? That's what I found Antonito
03:42 and his mama who as I was soon to discover were a part of several
03:47 generations of family members that make this place and the food absolutely magic.
03:53 You know this is the place that I've gone to several times and now we're back.
04:00 We're talking about Pizzeria Aurora. Right? I said it right. This pizza.
04:08 Margherita is the classical Neapolitan pizza. Actually Sorrento pizza. And we take quite
04:16 good care on the ingredients. I would say the secret besides the passion we put in
04:22 doing our job it is like we keep on searching the fresh ingredients.
04:28 Especially the pure.
04:30 I like the mozzarella free.
04:32 Mama she likes them because they are different.
04:36 Especially in this period.
04:38 And there it finally hit me. Right in front of me.
04:40 I think I discovered the hidden main ingredient that I was looking for.
04:44 It was called family. Or as they call it familia. Generations of one family that has been carrying on the same traditions of preparing and serving food for decades.
04:56 Two sisters, two boys.
05:02 Mama, mama, eight children.
05:04 She is the boss, my grandmother. She is the sister of the boss. I'm the third generation.
05:14 And for us the family is the first thing of life.
05:18 He is the last one of three brothers.
05:23 He is Marco.
05:26 And also my mother. My mother is the first of three brothers.
05:36 Now you got everything. Now you have the entire family.
05:41 Everybody let's hear it for our grandmothers.
05:44 And now I think it started to make sense to me.
05:50 After meeting the whole family and eating what might be some of the best food on the planet.
05:55 There was no way they were going to let us leave.
05:58 Yeah, they fed us some more food of course.
06:00 And then Marco couldn't wait to show me how they create the pizzas right there off the main street.
06:06 And then of course Mama insisted on showing me some more of their fresh food that is made from ingredients found right there in the Sorrento area.
06:14 Yeah, I was in heaven.
06:16 And now I finally realized that maybe it was little places like this and families just like this that make Sorrento one of the most beautiful places in the world.
06:28 And maybe, just maybe, it's why the food seems to taste just a little bit better in Italy.
06:37 Oh my, well if you want to see more of Michael Petri's Italian videos head to his YouTube page.
