An independent review of key sporting venues for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games has begun. Former Lord Mayor Graham Quirk is spearheading the 60-day investigation which will reconsider plans, including the contentious $2.7 billion-dollar Gabba redevelopment. Premier Steven Miles says he has always been advised a demolition and rebuild was the best option, but now acknowledges the government may have got it wrong.

00:58 Just two months ago, the then-Minister for Assisting the Premier
01:01 on Olympics infrastructure was touting the rebuild plan.
01:05 The demolition and rebuild provided the best possible outcome,
01:09 the best value outcome for the city.
01:11 I signed off on an option that I was consistently advised was the best outcome.
01:17 Now I'm saying I would like new advice, I would like independent advice.
01:22 That was a factor in launching the review, the impact the Gabba rebuild
01:26 would have on sporting codes like cricket and AFL,
01:29 which would need to find alternative venues for years.
01:32 I'm willing to acknowledge that we underestimated the impact of this
01:37 on those codes and on those teams. Maybe we got that wrong.
01:41 Community groups are sceptical of the review.
01:44 Until they are able to reduce those costs and assure our community
01:48 will not be destroyed and the park will remain as it is,
01:52 our community will continue to fight.
01:54 The review is due to be completed by March 18.
