00:03:30 Calgary, Alberta is one of North America's finest cities.
00:03:34 Although its nickname of "Cow Town" may lead you to believe otherwise,
00:03:37 Calgary is a very modern city that is considered to be one of the cleanest in the world.
00:03:42 Every once in a while I'm surprised by how interesting a city is,
00:03:45 and Calgary was one of those cities that exceeded my expectations.
00:03:48 I always like to start by exploring how a city wound up being where it is today.
00:03:51 Calgary is located where the Great Plains meet the Canadian Rockies
00:03:55 at the confluence of the Elbow and Bow Rivers.
00:03:58 The area has been inhabited for over 10,000 years,
00:04:01 namely by the people of the Blackfoot tribe,
00:04:03 who referred to the area as "The Elbow" because of the shape of the river.
00:04:07 The municipal city of Calgary is actually relatively young.
00:04:10 In 1875, the Canadian Mounties built a fort there to prevent illegal whiskey trading,
00:04:15 and settlers soon followed.
00:04:17 In 1883, the Canadian Pacific Railway selected the settlement as one of its stops,
00:04:22 leading to explosive growth for the young city.
00:04:24 Calgary became the prime distribution center for cattle and cash crop farming,
00:04:29 and then the discovery of oil near Calgary helped elevate the city to another level,
00:04:33 quickly becoming a major metropolis.
00:04:35 Today, Calgary has a metro population of around 1,300,000,
00:04:40 making it the fourth largest population center in Canada,
00:04:43 behind Vancouver and ahead of Calgary's rival Alberta city, Edmonton.
00:04:48 If comparing to cities in the US, Calgary is similar in size to Memphis,
00:04:52 but its impressive skyline would make you think that it was much larger,
00:04:56 which I'll talk more about in a minute.
00:04:58 The American city that Calgary is most similar to is probably Denver,
00:05:02 given their location east of the Rockies and a history tied to energy and the railroads.
00:05:07 Calgary is Canada's second largest corporate city,
00:05:10 some of the largest companies headquartered there being Enbridge,
00:05:13 Canadian Natural Resources, and the Canadian Pacific Railway.
00:05:17 There are seven colleges and universities in Calgary,
00:05:19 including the University of Calgary and Mount Royal University.
00:05:23 The city is considered to be one of the most clean and livable cities in the whole world.
00:05:27 Call me shallow, but when it comes to cities, I think appearances matter,
00:05:31 which is why evaluating a city's skyline is my favorite part of making these videos.
00:05:35 Calgary has one of the best looking skylines in all of North America in my opinion.
00:05:40 Its 19 skyscrapers are second only to Toronto within Canada,
00:05:44 and I think the skyscrapers come together nicely with their different architectural styles.
00:05:48 If you were to take the average height of Calgary's tallest five buildings,
00:05:52 it would rank as the 12th tallest skyline in the United States,
00:05:55 just behind Jersey City and just ahead of my home of Minneapolis.
00:05:59 Its tallest building is the Brookfields Place at 247 meters or 810 feet,
00:06:05 although my favorite skyscraper in the city is the Bow.
00:06:08 Many cities that have severe winters will have some sort of indoor skyway network,
00:06:13 but Calgary claims the title of having the largest skyway network in the whole world.
00:06:17 Calgary's skyway network, the +15 walkway, in total is 16 kilometers or 9.9 miles,
00:06:24 slightly beating out Minneapolis' skyway system.
00:06:27 Unlike Minneapolis' though, Calgary's system isn't continuous,
00:06:31 but is instead broken up into sections.
00:06:33 The system connects over 130 downtown buildings
00:06:37 and has the core shopping center in the middle of the skyway system.
00:06:40 Connected to the skyways is one of the most unique buildings in the skyline, the Calgary Tower.
00:06:45 The tower was originally called the Husky Tower and was the tallest structure in Canada
00:06:50 outside of Toronto when it was completed in 1968.
00:06:53 At 626 feet, it's about 20 feet taller than the Space Needle in Seattle.
00:06:58 And just like the Space Needle, there's a 360-degree observation deck as well as a restaurant at the top.
00:07:04 The tower was one of the founding members of the World's Federation of Great Towers.
00:07:09 Another interesting building in Calgary is Studio Bell,
00:07:12 which is where the National Music Center is located.
00:07:14 The unique architecture of the building is in itself breathtaking,
00:07:18 and beyond that, the building is a performance hall, a museum, a broadcast studio, as well as a recording facility.
00:07:24 Just to the south of downtown is Heritage Park Historical Village.
00:07:28 This village is Canada's second largest living history museum with more than 100 historic homes you can step in.
00:07:34 Another park I should mention is Fish Creek Park,
00:07:37 which is the second largest urban park in Canada and one of the largest in all of North America.
00:07:42 It has over 100 kilometers or 62 miles of trails.
00:07:46 Another building in Calgary with unique modern architecture is the New Central Library.
00:07:51 This public library is the sixth most used library in all of North America.
00:07:56 This beautiful library was completed in 2014 and has been described as one of the new icons of the city.
00:08:02 When talking about the skyline, I had mentioned that my favorite building is the Bow,
00:08:06 and at its base is a unique work of art.
00:08:09 The Wonderland sculpture is a 12-meter tall bent-wire head of a young girl.
00:08:13 It's certainly an eye-catching sculpture and you can even walk inside of it through an entrance on the neck.
00:08:19 Another eye-catching aspect of the city is the home of the Calgary Flames, the Saddle Dome.
00:08:24 The shape of the roof looks like a horse saddle, which is fitting given that Calgary is known for the Calgary Stampede.
00:08:30 I couldn't make a video about Calgary and not mention this annual event.
00:08:33 Believe it or not, the world's largest rodeo isn't in Texas, it's the Calgary Stampede in Alberta.
00:08:39 This is a massive 10-day event and one that is closely tied to the identity of Calgary.
00:08:45 Some of Calgary's nicknames include Stampede City and Cowtown partially because of this event.
00:08:51 Calgary has a very unique bridge that I wanted to quickly mention named Peace Bridge, which extends over the Bow River.
00:08:57 This bridge was designed by Santiago Calatrava, which is the same architect that designed the Oculus in New York City
00:09:04 and Milwaukee's incredible art museum, which I talked about in my Milwaukee overview video.
00:09:09 And lastly, I'll mention that Calgary is the nearest metro to the breathtaking Banff National Park.
00:09:14 Banff National Park is the most visited national park in all of Canada and is only about an hour and a half drive from Calgary.
00:09:21 Well, that wraps up my video about Calgary.
00:09:23 In Canada, especially in Calgary, a multicultural and welcoming city, Canada Day is highly treasured by all residents.
00:09:31 For three decades, the Calgary Chinese Culture Centre has been the winery of choice to celebrate Canada Day year after year.
00:09:39 Around 10,000 attendees will be gathering at the centre, showing the city's strong appreciation for culture diverse and its unwavering support for the Chinese community.
00:09:50 Performance starts at 12 o'clock on Canada Day, but even if you come at 11 o'clock, the booth will be available.
00:10:00 Our musicians will be playing music and the face painters would be able to start face painting even before that.
00:10:10 The event will be held on July 1st between 11 and 5 with admission is free.
00:10:16 The Lion and Dragon Dance that are often performed during the Chinese Lunar New Year will also be presented on Canada Day,
00:10:23 which shows the importance that the Chinese people live in Calgary attach to this celebration.
00:10:29 It was not the first year that the Calgary Chinese Culture Centre has organized a Canada Day event.
00:10:35 And this year it's really worth to mention is they got an influencer and handicraft booth with full of the traditional Chinese culture.
00:10:43 As much as Calgary is known that their Chinatown is full of culture, but the history remains hidden.
00:10:49 At the Culture Centre, you can also find many historical Chinese artifacts on display with their own story and culture from China.
00:10:59 Other than this, the history of Calgary's Chinatown is also being told, as well as the topics of tragedy,
00:11:07 racism and relocation that the residents of Chinatown faced many years ago.

00:13:00 For the Chinese people, the Qingming Festival is a holiday they celebrate every year to honor their ancestors.
00:13:06 Families get together to visit the graveyards of family members who have departed.
00:13:12 The parents, they will prepare all the sacrificial offerings and then we'll travel to the mountains where the grave is located.
00:13:21 And then we'll go pay tribute to the ancestors.
00:13:24 And when we finish doing that, we give the offering and when the offering ceremony is finished, then we enjoy the food.
00:13:33 In Calgary, the Chinese Cultural Centre celebrates the Qingming Festival during the weekend with cultural workshops, performances, crafts and food.
00:13:43 Calgarians enjoy learning these traditions with family and friends.
00:13:48 To me, that's very significant in Chinese culture, but it's also very significant for Alberta culture because in Alberta, it doesn't matter which culture we come from,
00:13:58 when we talk about family, it's a common theme that we all pay very much high respect.
00:14:05 Jiwo Kim's art caught a lot of attention with her portraits in pencil, crayons and markers.
00:14:11 She's a young art and design student who wants to become an animator or storyboard artist.
00:14:17 I like using fun colours and textures.
00:14:20 And this is Pedro Pascal.
00:14:23 Yeah, I watched The Last of Us and I wanted to draw him.
00:14:30 On display is a print of the most famous work among all Chinese paintings, called Along the River during the Qingming Festival.
00:14:38 The original hand-scrawled painting was painted over silk over 900 years ago and is kept in the Forbidden City in Beijing.
00:14:47 The Qingming Festival has evolved to become a celebration of Chinese culture and history.
00:14:53 Festivities will go on in Calgary Cultural Centre until Sunday, April 2.

00:24:40 This is a real tragedy guys. My first stampede and I forgot to buy a cowboy hat.
00:24:52 It's actually very strange that I have never come to the Calgary Stampede before
00:24:57 because this is a hundred percent the most famous attraction here in Alberta.
00:25:03 The Calgary Stampede is the largest rodeo in all of Canada.
00:25:07 It brings in over a million tourists every single year.
00:25:11 But not only is it a rodeo, it's also an exhibition.
00:25:14 There's lots of live performers and as you can see right behind me,
00:25:18 they are just gearing up for the big parade.
00:25:21 So I hope you guys will join me for an amazing day of festivities.
00:25:25 I'm going to be meeting one of my really good friends to join me on this adventure
00:25:29 and I think it's going to be an amazing day.

00:26:59 So as you guys can see, I caved.
00:27:06 I got myself a cowboy hat and it was actually only $30.
00:27:10 Usually, you know, if you get a really high quality one,
00:27:13 they can easily be like $100 or more.
00:27:16 So I am more than happy to support LeMans or however you call it
00:27:22 and also get some protection from the sun because today it is hot.
00:27:27 The Canadian flag is Jenna Peters.

00:27:41 Championship Sunday at the 2023 Calgary Stampede
00:27:51 and inside GMC Stadium sold out crowd.
00:27:54 23,000 watched history being made.
00:27:58 In the bareback riding, it was young gun Cade Sonier.
00:28:06 He was with three past Calgary Stampede winners in the final four
00:28:11 and the young man rises to the top,
00:28:14 cementing his name in the Calgary Stampede record books.
00:28:19 Aboard C5 Rodeo's Virgil, a superstar of a horse,
00:28:23 92 points for the effort and Cade is a Calgary Stampede champion.
00:28:32 Now all four of those men hold bronzes.
00:28:36 In the barrel racing, it's Brittany Posey-Tanazi.
00:28:40 Her and her horse, Benny, have been on fire all week long
00:28:45 and they do it one more time.
00:28:47 This one for the big win, stopping the clock in 17.133 seconds.
00:28:54 Brittany's saying dreams do come true after two decades.
00:28:59 That's right. She's been competing here for 19 years
00:29:03 and finally stands on that stage to hold up the $50,000 check.
00:29:09 The ladies brought the heat for 10 days and Brittany is a champion.
00:29:24 In the tie-down roping, Bo Cooper just made it into showdown Sunday.
00:29:29 Well then, he rose to the number one spot.
00:29:33 2021 World Tie-Down Rookie of the Year,
00:29:37 looking for his first trip to the NFR
00:29:40 and stops the clock in seven seconds to become the newest Calgary Stampede champion.
00:29:46 That is emotion from a winner.
00:29:49 The maple leaf flying on top, both Bo Cooper and Kyle Lucas won in two here.
00:29:55 The Hay family, infamous for championships in Calgary.
00:30:05 As we go to the saddle bronc riding, it was Dawson Hay aboard Calgary Stampede's explosive skies.
00:30:11 The same horse his brother Logan has set the world record on.
00:30:16 And he now is 92 points, taking that horse straight to the winner's circle.
00:30:23 Logan won here a year ago. Now, it's Dawson on top.
00:30:28 92-90, the crowd was wild for the saddle bronc riding.
00:30:43 These athletes made Alberta proud as we go now to Alberta's own Scott Gintner.
00:30:49 Stopping the clock in 3.2 seconds, he was last to go.
00:30:53 He meant business and the hats went flying for Gintner.
00:30:58 Just two tenths of a second off the arena record.
00:31:01 Second generation champion, his dad, Hall of Fame inductee Ken Gintner, won here back in 1982.
00:31:09 What a way to bring it back home to the family.
00:31:14 In the bull riding, Jared Parsonage made his way through gold buckles.
00:31:23 And it was the two-time Canadian champion, NFR qualifier, who stood on top when the dust settled.
00:31:30 He danced to aid aboard Volt Rodeo's Wild Time for 89 points.
00:31:38 Into his hand, made all the right moves to get to the requisite 8.
00:31:43 And that is a champion holding up $50,000.
00:31:48 The only qualified ride we saw in the round of 4, and Parsonage is on top.
00:31:57 Cade Saunier, Brittany Posey-Tanazi, Bo Cooper, Dawson Hay, Scott Gintner, and Jared Parsonage.
00:32:06 You're looking at your 2023 Calgary Stampede champions.
00:32:11 Another year of fantastic rodeo in the books at the greatest outdoor show on earth.
00:32:21 [music]
00:32:26 Go back on that simmer board and show that replay.
00:32:30 See that horse just barely off that barrel.
00:32:33 Today, and the next three days after that.
00:32:38 Make those turns nice and tight.
00:32:41 Come around the final barrel, and go for home, go for home.
00:32:46 [music]
00:32:53 Wow.

00:33:32 And I just want to point out that you guys have been doing that all along.
00:33:35 It's about time.
00:33:37 At this time, I would like to introduce our Calgary Stampede chairman and president, Stephen Dunham,
00:33:44 to give greetings on behalf of the Calgary Stampede.
00:33:48 And then if I could ask our lady and next...
00:33:50 And I'd love to know in the comments how many of you have actually been to Calgary Stampede.
00:34:06 What was your experience?
00:34:08 And as always, I'm sending you guys so much love.
00:34:10 I hope you're having a fantastic day.
00:34:12 And keep being your own kind of beautiful.
00:34:14 Bye, guys.

00:34:17 Vancouver is a world-class city.
00:34:20 It's surrounded by incredible natural beauty, has a massive skyline,
00:34:24 and is consistently ranked as a top five city in the world for quality of life.
00:34:28 I visited the city several years ago and was thoroughly impressed by it.
00:34:32 I always like to start by exploring how a city wound up being where it is today.
00:34:35 Vancouver is located on the west coast of Canada between the Fraser River and the Burrard Inlet.
00:34:41 The area had been inhabited by several First Nations peoples prior to 1827
00:34:46 when Fort Langley was set up by the Hudson Bay Company.
00:34:49 Lumber was the first and most important industry to the settlement,
00:34:53 which at the time was called Granville.
00:34:55 The settlement was situated on a natural harbor,
00:34:58 so it was selected as the terminus or final stop for the Canadian Pacific Railway.
00:35:03 The completion of the railway made Vancouver the connecting point
00:35:07 between the Pacific and the rest of Canada, leading to tremendous growth.
00:35:11 Today, the population of Vancouver is around 675,000.
00:35:15 This makes it the most densely populated city in Canada
00:35:18 and the fifth most densely populated city in all of North America.
00:35:22 If you've watched many of my other videos,
00:35:24 you'll know that I think metro population is a better indicator for a city's true size,
00:35:28 and Vancouver has a metro population of over 2.6 million,
00:35:32 making it the third largest metro area in Canada,
00:35:35 behind Montreal and ahead of Ottawa.
00:35:38 The population of Vancouver is very diverse,
00:35:40 and is sometimes referred to as the most Asian city outside of Asia.
00:35:44 Vancouver has a large economy,
00:35:46 and is a major tech and entertainment hub of Canada,
00:35:49 even earning the nickname of "Hollywood North" because of all of the film studios.
00:35:53 Some of the most recognizable companies headquartered there include
00:35:57 Lululemon, Arcteryx, TELUS, and 1-800-GOT-JUNK.
00:36:02 Vancouver is also home to the University of British Columbia,
00:36:05 which is one of the highest ranked public universities in the world.
00:36:09 The Vancouver skyline is massive.
00:36:12 It's been compared to a thick forest made of glass and concrete.
00:36:16 The city has 650 buildings over 35 meters,
00:36:20 which is more than every US city other than New York and Chicago.
00:36:24 However, the city skyline is relatively short for a city of its size.
00:36:28 If you were to average the tallest 5 buildings in the city,
00:36:31 the height would be 169 meters,
00:36:34 which is shorter than that of Edmonton's skyline,
00:36:36 and if comparing to US cities,
00:36:38 would be ranked as the 23rd tallest skyline,
00:36:41 falling between New Orleans and Tulsa.
00:36:43 The reason for the flat skyline is that there are 27 protected view corridors
00:36:48 that limit the city's height so the buildings don't obstruct the view of the mountains.
00:36:52 As much as I love skyscrapers,
00:36:54 I think it's a good call to keep them short when a city is surrounded by such natural beauty.
00:36:58 The tallest building in Vancouver is the Living Shangri-La,
00:37:01 which stands at 200 meters or 659 feet.
00:37:05 It was used as the fictional headquarters of the company Encon in the 2010 movie Tron.
00:37:11 On the peninsula adjacent to downtown is one of the most incredible parks in the world, Stanley Park.
00:37:17 The park is one of the largest urban parks in North America
00:37:20 and is named after the same Stanley that the NHL's Stanley Cup is named after.
00:37:25 Most of the park is wooded with some trees standing over 150 feet tall.
00:37:29 One of the most well-known aspects of the park is the path that surrounds it,
00:37:33 which is referred to as the seawall.
00:37:35 The seawall is probably my favorite biking path that I've personally ever been on.
00:37:39 Within Stanley Park is the Vancouver Aquarium,
00:37:42 which ranks as one of the top 5 aquariums in the whole world.
00:37:45 It was Canada's first public aquarium,
00:37:48 and today it is home to 65,000 animals and is the largest aquarium in all of Canada.
00:37:54 Across the Lionsgate Bridge from Stanley Park is the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park.
00:37:59 The Capilano Suspension Bridge stretches 140 meters long
00:38:03 and sways about 70 meters above the Capilano River.
00:38:07 The park also includes the curved bridge called Cliff Walk
00:38:10 and suspension bridges connecting some of the trees.
00:38:13 I love Art Deco architecture,
00:38:15 and Vancouver has one of the best Art Deco buildings in the world,
00:38:18 the Marine Building.
00:38:20 The Marine Building was once the tallest skyscraper in Vancouver,
00:38:23 but it's most known for the intricate details of its architecture,
00:38:27 particularly on the interior.
00:38:29 Perhaps the most eye-catching building in Vancouver, though, is the Science World,
00:38:33 which has a shiny, large, metallic ball sitting on the roof.
00:38:36 The building was built for the 1986 World's Fair,
00:38:39 and today is a science museum with interactive exhibits
00:38:42 and a 400-seat Omnimax theater at the top of the dome.
00:38:46 Vancouver is also home to the longest outdoor swimming pool in North America.
00:38:51 Kitsilano Pool, or Kits Pool, is a gargantuan 137 meters long,
00:38:56 which is about the same length as the Capilano Suspension Bridge.
00:39:00 The swimming pool was originally filled by the rising tide,
00:39:03 and occasionally they would even find octopus and mud sharks in the pool.
00:39:06 Before the settlement that became Vancouver was named Granville,
00:39:09 it was actually called Gastown.
00:39:11 Today, the area of the original settlement is still called Gastown.
00:39:15 The area has maintained a much older and more historic feel than the rest of the city.
00:39:19 Within Gastown is the famous Gastown Steam Clock.
00:39:23 The clock was built over a steam grate to harness the power of the steam.
00:39:27 The steam powers the clock as well as its sound production,
00:39:30 which is why it makes a whistle sound to signal the time.
00:39:33 Another interesting neighborhood within Vancouver is Granville Island,
00:39:37 which has a famous public market as well as various theaters, art studios, and restaurants.
00:39:42 And while on the topic of food,
00:39:44 I should point out that Vancouver's famous seafood and its Asian population
00:39:48 have combined to make Vancouver the sushi capital of North America.
00:39:52 It's generally accepted that the famous California roll was actually invented here in Vancouver.
00:39:58 And lastly, there are of course the mountains.
00:40:00 Not every city is as lucky to have such a beautiful backdrop.
00:40:03 About 20 minutes north of the city is the ski resort Grouse Mountain,
00:40:07 which has a pretty amazing view of Vancouver.
00:40:10 The most famous ski resort in the area is Whistler, which is a couple hours away.
00:40:14 Well, that wraps up my video about Vancouver.
