Johnny Tapia turned pro in 1988 and drew his first bout against Efren Chavez. Tapia won his next 26 bouts, acquiring the USBA and NABF super flyweight belts in the process. In his next fight, Tapia stopped Henry Martinez in the 11th round to win the vacant WBO title in 1994. His first defence was a points win over Jose Rafael Sosa. Tapia's second defence ended in a majority technical decision draw against Ricardo Vargas, due to a cut Tapia suffered from an accidental clash of heads. Tapia then had a majority decision win over Arthur Johnson, plus a ninth round stoppage of Willy Salazar and a couple of non-title ten rounders in between.

Giovanni Andrade turned pro in 1993. Most of his fights took place in his native Brazil and in neighbouring Argentina. Just about every time he shared a ring with a fighter with a good record, and every time he fouhgt outside of Brazil or Argentina, Andrade lost. Nearly all of his wins were against journeymen with mediocre records. Andrade lost his sixth bout to Sergio Antonio Nunez on points in 1993. After a couple of points wins, Andrade lost on points to Miguel Angel Noez. He then won his next ten bouts to set up his fight with Tapia. His best win was a points verdict over Wellington Vicente, who was unbeaten at the time.
