00:00 Whether it's at home, at school or online, sexism against women is on the rise in France.
00:06 That's the conclusion of a French watchdog tasked with monitoring sexism across society.
00:11 In its annual report, France's High Council for Gender Equality says nine out of ten women
00:16 questioned in a survey had been the victim of sexist behaviour.
00:20 Amongst some of the most startling trends, that men aged 25 to 34 may be more sexist
00:26 than their elders.
00:27 With some even claiming that men are better suited to managerial roles than women.
00:32 The watchdog warned of a growing male backlash against efforts to achieve gender equality.
00:39 The more public debate is focused on women's rights, the bigger the male backlash.
00:44 Sexist male behaviour and reflexes are gaining ground amongst young men, whilst more women
00:48 are being associated with housebound roles.
00:52 It described sexism as a virus which had to be uprooted at the earliest age, starting
00:57 both at home and at school, where gender stereotypes persist.
01:01 Whereas most young boys had been given toy cars during their childhood, most young girls
01:05 played with dolls.
01:06 And those gender stereotypes persevered well into adolescence in the classroom, with long-term
01:11 consequences on career choices.
01:15 The report also warns against the impact of pornography on the way men treat their female
01:19 partners, with many young men saying they'd imitated misogynistic behaviour they'd seen
01:24 in clips online.
01:26 They called for new legislation that would force online platforms to regulate their most
01:30 popular content for signs of sexism, a proposal that's already been welcomed by the bosses
01:34 of both Meta and Google in France.
