00:41 Hello, and welcome to "From the South."
00:44 I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:48 We begin with the news.
00:49 In Venezuela, citizens mobilized in support
00:52 of the government of President Nicolás Maduro
00:55 and in rejection of the conspiratorial actions
00:57 of sectors of the extreme right.
00:59 The leadership of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela
01:02 announced this mobilization as the first stage
01:05 of the Bolivarian Fury Plan and that they
01:08 will have a series of marches starting this Tuesday
01:11 and will continue until February 4.
01:14 Some spokesmen revealed that the mobilization is nationwide,
01:18 and in the city of Caracas, it will
01:20 start from the east zone to the center of the capital.
01:24 They also explained that the mobilization will
01:26 be so that there will be no more betrayals to the people,
01:30 but also in rejection to the coup, to terrorism,
01:34 to violence, to the Guarimba, and for the peace
01:37 of all Venezuelans.
01:38 In Venezuela, they commemorate 66 years
01:47 of the fall of the dictatorship of General Pérez Jiménez
01:51 and to vindicate the martyrs of that memorable feat.
01:54 The fall of the dictatorship was the result
01:56 of the union of the people and the military leaders
01:59 of the time who rose up against the government of Marco Pérez
02:03 Jiménez, against liberalism, against the violation
02:06 of human rights, and to recover the country's democracy.
02:10 After the overthrow of the military dictatorship,
02:12 every January 23 since 1958 is commemorated
02:17 as the Day of Democracy, a day that
02:19 marks the history and the political and social identity
02:22 of the Venezuelan people.
02:24 And in the images, we are seeing that the mobilization
02:33 of Venezuelan revolutionary forces
02:36 is passing through a sector controlled
02:38 by the opposition, in which its leaders also made a call,
02:42 and there were demonstrations on this historic day.
02:46 Likewise, the people of Venezuela
02:47 are demonstrating in spite of the differences of thought
02:51 and political leadership, and in spite
02:53 of the expression of the extreme right wing of the country.
02:56 During the mobilizations, Venezuelan citizens
03:03 demanded social rights and expressed their support
03:06 and backing to the president, Nicolás Maduro, in favor of peace.
03:10 Let's see.
03:12 A bipartisan dictatorship where the Venezuelan people
03:16 had no social and civil rights, and thanks
03:19 to the Bolivarian Revolution, today we restore it.
03:22 And our commander Chavez, and we continue it
03:25 to his president Maduro 25 years later.
03:30 We are here in the capital city of Caracas,
03:33 celebrating another anniversary of a step towards democracy.
03:36 With the events that occurred on January the 23rd, 1958.
03:46 However, that step towards democracy
03:48 was betrayed by the Pact of Fixpoint.
03:49 Today, the socialists, the chavistas, the revolutionaries
03:59 are here marching in support of our democracy,
04:02 in support of peace, and also in support of our president
04:08 Nicolás Maduro.
04:09 And especially in this historic moment
04:11 when our homeland feels threatened
04:16 by imperial interests, today we say
04:18 that we are a people of peace.
04:21 Demonstrators from a mix of social groups
04:24 gathered outside the residence of Argentina's president,
04:27 Javier Milley, on Tuesday to demand for more state aid.
04:31 The rally comes a day before trade unions
04:34 and political forces called for a strike
04:36 against the government's economic reforms.
04:38 The demonstrators demanded more food, tools,
04:41 and infrastructure for the soup kitchens
04:43 they run in the private neighborhoods.
04:46 President Milley is pushing for a drastic reduction
04:49 of the fiscal deficit with a range of austerity measures
04:53 that has put trade unions, left-wing parties,
04:55 and popular sectors on the warpath.
04:58 The opposition-aligned grassroots social movement
05:01 Barrios de Pie and other social organizations
05:04 maintain that more and more people suffer
05:07 from an emergency situation amid skyrocketing food prices
05:11 and the lack of formal work.
05:13 [SPEAKING SPANISH]
05:20 Our concern is that food is lacking.
05:22 There is already hunger in our people then.
05:25 And we see that the government does not
05:27 announce public policies for our sector.
05:29 The only thing it announces for this sector is a heavy hand.
05:32 [SPEAKING SPANISH]
05:35 Tomorrow, there will be a first mobilization
05:37 where the entire people will come out.
05:39 [SPEAKING SPANISH]
05:43 Not only to repudiate, but to demand that this austerity law
05:50 not pass through Congress.
05:53 In Cuba since the upcoming weekend and until January 28,
05:58 the 39th edition of the International Jazz Plaza 2024
06:02 Festival will entertain the nights of Havana and Santiago
06:05 de Cuba with concert programs that
06:07 includes instrumentalist and singers
06:09 from more than 20 countries of the Americas, Europe, and Asia.
06:13 From Havana, our correspondent Fabiola López
06:16 tells us more about it.
06:17 [MUSIC PLAYING]
06:20 For a week, Havana will once again
06:22 have jazz as its soundtrack.
06:24 [MUSIC PLAYING]
06:26 The amazing Martí Theater is just one of the many stages
06:30 where jazz lovers from all over the world
06:33 will be delighted during these days.
06:35 [SPEAKING SPANISH]
06:37 We open the doors.
06:38 We want to show our culture.
06:40 We want to show our identity, our Cuban culture,
06:42 and that our music can be perfectly combined with jazz,
06:45 just like the great master did, Chico Fajr, Chano Pozo,
06:48 all those great masters who opened the doors for us,
06:51 Chucho Valdés, Gonzalo Rubalcaba.
06:53 So I think it makes a difference.
06:54 It makes a difference that we Cubans
06:56 like to share what we have, little or much,
06:59 what we have we share.
07:00 And that is what is needed.
07:01 That is what jazz is.
07:03 It is sharing as a whole.
07:04 [MUSIC PLAYING]
07:06 [SPEAKING SPANISH]
07:07 The Centenary Martí Theater is crowded.
07:10 Tonight, a luxury cast is presented--
07:13 the pianist and composer Arturo Farrell,
07:15 the string quartet Alma, the composer and music arranger
07:19 Alejandro Falcón, the US saxophonist Flotis,
07:22 and jazz composer Ted Nash, and the trio Cuba Ventro.
07:26 [MUSIC PLAYING]
07:29 I think Cuba has something sexy.
07:31 It has something that says that everyone
07:33 wants to come to Havana to know what the Cubans have.
07:35 They are so talented.
07:36 They have so much salsa.
07:38 And it is still a country that people want to discover.
07:40 So when you get here, you realize
07:42 that there is so much accessibility to culture
07:45 that is so close to you that you really
07:47 don't see in any country.
07:48 Really, the work that is being done in art school
07:51 is wonderful.
07:52 And everyone who comes here can enjoy it firsthand.
07:55 [MUSIC PLAYING]
07:57 This time, the International Festival Jazz Plaza 2024
08:00 makes a difference with the fusion of music and dance.
08:04 On this occasion, the dancers of the El Mapazo Company
08:07 delight the audience.
08:08 [MUSIC PLAYING]
08:12 Afro Latin music, the music of Cuba,
08:14 the music that we are celebrating in this festival
08:16 is the music of the future.
08:19 When there are no borders, there are no wars.
08:22 Here, we are practicing modern music.
08:26 Will be intense days that include
08:29 two international conferences, one in Havana
08:31 and another in Santiago de Cuba, to exchange on jazz.
08:35 184 concerts in the capital and 74
08:38 in the most convenient Cuban cities
08:40 with more than 150 artists from 21 countries,
08:44 including 92 from the United States,
08:47 and all, as the slogan of the event says,
08:49 "flow at our own rhythms."
08:51 Some people say that without Cuba, there is no jazz.
08:54 Is that true?
08:55 That may be true.
08:57 I mean, Cuba has all the elements of jazz.
08:59 The Afro rhythms and European harmony, the jazz has.
09:03 So who's to say who's first, the chicken or the egg?
09:07 But I think Cuba might be the winner.
09:11 Jazz is freedom.
09:12 Jazz is the nature.
09:14 It is something that characterizes us.
09:16 That is musicians, improvisation.
09:18 Improvisation is very important and about all
09:20 because we share with each other.
09:22 We listen to each other.
09:23 We learn from what this musician does.
09:26 When we are going to play and improvise in jazz,
09:29 we have to be aware of what the other is doing.
09:32 It is like a great brotherhood.
09:34 Jazz gives you a way that you can feel yourself
09:37 in many moods, and those moods can
09:39 be sent at a time like this.
09:42 You can go from one state of mind to the next.
09:45 All of that is right now in jazz,
09:47 and you can create them in a way, and it is magic.
09:52 The truth is that the next night on this island
09:55 will be fantastic, according to the great musician
09:58 and founder of this festival, Bobby Carcassés,
10:01 jazz plaza has a unique feeling that cultivates.

10:22,
10:51 Welcome back to From the South.
10:53 In Palestine, at least 195 civilians
10:56 were killed by the Israeli occupation forces
10:59 during the last 24 hours in the Gaza Strip.
11:01 According to the Gaza Health Ministry,
11:04 these assassinations took place during 22 massacres
11:07 perpetrated by troops of the Tel Aviv regime
11:10 in the last 24 hours, most of them in the city of Khan Yunis,
11:14 where the Zionist army is concentrating its offensive
11:17 and is holding the two main hospitals in the area,
11:20 Nasser and Al-Amal, on the siege.
11:23 According to the health authority,
11:24 these acts also left 354 wounded,
11:28 while warning that these figures could be even higher
11:31 since numerous victims are still under the rubble.
11:34 According to the latest count by the Gaza Health Ministry,
11:38 25,490 Palestinians have been killed
11:42 by Israel since October.
11:48 In Iran, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei
11:51 criticized the wrong stances that Islamic countries
11:54 sometimes adopt when confronting Israel.
11:57 During a speech in Tehran on Tuesday,
12:00 the Iranian leader said that Islamic countries
12:03 should cut off the vital arteries of the Zionist regime.
12:07 Khamenei remarks that these countries should cut off
12:09 their political and economic relations
12:11 with the Zionist regime and not help Tel Aviv.
12:15 Ayatollah Khamenei also stressed that despite
12:17 the inadequate actions of the officials
12:20 of the Islamic countries and all their difficulties,
12:23 the ultimate victory belongs to the people of Gaza.
12:26 According to the Israel Regime Security Studies Institute,
12:30 Hamas is keeping Israel under a prolonged war of attrition
12:34 so that the Zionist regime is far from achieving its goals.
12:38 - Muslims say there must be a ceasefire.
12:46 Well, a ceasefire is not in your hands.
12:48 It rests in the hands of that wicked enemy, Israel.
12:51 It doesn't make a ceasefire.
12:52 You sit down and ratify something
12:54 that is not under your control.
12:55 There are things that are in your hands,
13:02 but you don't ratify them.
13:03 What is that?
13:04 Cutting off vital veins to the Zionist regime.
13:07 This is in your hands.
13:08 You can stop helping and supporting Israel.
13:10 You can sever political and economic ties with Israel.
13:15 - Spain Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Alvarez
13:17 called on Tuesday in Beirut for an immediate and permanent
13:21 ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
13:23 The Spanish top diplomat also called
13:25 for the release of all hostages after a meeting
13:28 with Lebanon's caretaker Prime Minister Najib Bikadi.
13:32 Alvarez also said Spain believed a peace plan must include
13:36 the recognition and establishment
13:38 of a viable Palestinian state with Gaza and the West Bank
13:41 under a single authority.
13:43 On the other hand, Prime Minister Bikadi
13:45 thanked Madrid for its constant support for Lebanon
13:48 on all levels while praising the role of the Spanish battalion
13:52 operating within the United Nations
13:54 interim force in Lebanon.
13:56 The Spanish Foreign Minister arrived in Lebanon on Tuesday
13:59 on an official visit.
14:00 - We ask for an immediate and permanent ceasefire,
14:11 and we ask for the immediate and unconditional release
14:13 of all hostages.
14:14 As you know, the International Peace Conference
14:16 is a Spanish proposal, and therefore, we
14:19 will be an active country in the development of the peace plan
14:22 presented yesterday by the High Representative
14:24 of the European Union, Joseph Borrell,
14:27 at the end of the Foreign Affairs Council meeting.
14:29 The recognition and establishment
14:34 of a realistic and viable Palestinian state
14:37 with Gaza and the West Bank under a single authority,
14:40 with territorial continuity, with a corridor connecting them
14:43 with an outlet to the sea and a port in Gaza,
14:46 with its capital in East Jerusalem.
14:49 - The United Nations Security Council
14:51 is holding a high-level open debate Tuesday
14:54 to discuss the Middle East conflict
14:56 while the region is considered a powdered gag by the Secretary
15:00 General himself.
15:01 The ministerial meeting brings together
15:03 foreign ministers and world representatives
15:06 amid the worsening situation for civilians in Gaza,
15:09 hostilities over the Red Sea or West Bank,
15:12 and rising tensions between Iraq and Iran.
15:14 United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres
15:18 again called for a double effort to prevent the conflict
15:22 from spreading further.
15:23 He said he would not relent in his call
15:26 for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire
15:29 and the unconditional release of all hostages in the Strip.

16:00 Welcome back.
16:16 Turkish Parliament deputies voted Tuesday
16:18 in favor of Sweden's accession to NATO.
16:21 The approval comes two years after Stockholm,
16:23 together with Helsinki, applied for membership
16:26 in the US-led alliance.
16:28 Despite the approval of the Nordic countries' NATO
16:31 membership, some politicians opposed Sweden's membership
16:34 in the alliance, claiming that not all of Ankara's demand
16:39 regarding the extradition of Kurdistan.
16:41 Likewise, the deputies cited the burning of the Kurban
16:48 as a reason for rejecting Stockholm's request.
16:51 Sweden and Finland applied to join the NATO in May 2022.
16:55 Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
16:58 then raised a number of objections
17:01 to both applications on the grounds
17:03 that both countries were protecting groups labeled
17:05 as terrorist by Ankara.
17:07 The Italian Parliament debated on Tuesday
17:14 the ratification of a controversial government
17:17 decree to build detention and processing centers
17:20 for migrants in Albania.
17:21 Under the five-year agreement announced in November,
17:25 Albania will host up to 36,000 migrants for a year,
17:29 about 3,000 a month.
17:31 Among those trying to reach Italy without visas,
17:33 most of them on dangerous sea crossings.
17:36 Albania would house the migrants in two facilities
17:39 while Italy fast-tracks their asylum applications.
17:43 The preceding centers will be managed by Italian officials,
17:47 with Albanian guards providing security around the centers.
17:50 Italy has committed to pay for the construction and operation
17:54 of the two centers under Italian jurisdiction.
17:57 A car rammed into a roadblock put up
18:04 by protesting farmers in the southwestern French department
18:07 of Aries on Tuesday, killing a woman
18:10 and seriously injured her husband and teenage daughter.
18:14 According to local police, the vehicle
18:16 was traveling on the dual-lane carriageway leading
18:20 to the roadblock, despite it being clearly marked
18:22 a closed to traffic because of the protest.
18:26 The three occupants of the car were
18:28 taken into police custody on suspicion
18:30 of involuntary manslaughter.
18:32 However, the local prosecutor said
18:34 the early results of the investigation
18:37 suggested that the car had not rammed the barrier
18:40 intentionally.
18:41 The farmers have been blocking roads across the country
18:44 in protest at what they say are deteriorating conditions
18:48 in the agricultural sector.
18:50 In Germany, at least 10,000 jobs in the construction sector
18:54 could be cut amid the energy crisis.
18:56 The Industrial Construction Association
18:59 affirms that this is the first time that the reduction
19:02 of personnel will be significant since the International
19:05 Financial Crisis of 2008, in which more than 700,000 workers
19:11 lost their jobs.
19:12 The organization points out, among other causes
19:14 of this situation, that the construction sector
19:17 is facing a major economic crisis.
19:19 The situation is not only due to the economic crisis,
19:22 but also to the reduction of purchasing power.
19:25 On the other hand, the increase in energy prices
19:28 as part of the measures implemented by the government
19:30 to face the current economic crisis.
19:32 Also in Germany, citizens took to the streets in protest
19:41 against the actions of the extreme right wing led
19:44 by the ultra-conservative party Alternative for Germany.
19:48 The news unleashed criticism and discontent among the citizens
19:52 after the possible deportation of some migrants
19:54 with German citizenship was revealed.
19:57 Finally, local media reported that at least 100,000 people
20:02 in the cities of Frankfurt, Hanover, and Dortmund
20:05 mobilized in favor of democracy in the country
20:08 and rejected the attacks of the far right.
20:10 [AUDIO OUT]
20:13 Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday
20:19 that the foundation of the Al-Daba Nuclear Power
20:22 Plant is a new stage in the construction of a nuclear power
20:25 plant in Egypt.
20:27 The statement was made through a video link
20:29 during the Al-Daba Nuclear Power Plant's foundation laying
20:33 ceremony, which was presided over by Egypt's President Abdel
20:37 Fatah el-Sisi.
20:38 The plant will be built by the Russian state's nuclear energy
20:42 corporation, Rosatom.
20:44 During his address, Putin said Russia
20:46 will contribute to the creation of modern industry,
20:49 qualified jobs, and the solution of social issues.
20:53 The Russian president also described the new project
