00:00 Well, from July 1st, every Australian taxpayer can expect a tax cut.
00:06 Now these stage 3 tax cuts, mainly in their current form, benefit the highest income earners
00:13 in the country.
00:15 They'll be modified to help lower and middle income earners across the country.
00:20 Now the government will basically be cutting money from those higher earners and redistributing
00:26 that to the people that are earning just under $146,000.
00:32 It should be noted that only 14% of taxpayers earn over $120,000.
00:39 The coalition are touting this as a broken promise from the government.
00:43 Peter Dutton, the opposition leader, has said that the Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has
00:47 misled the public and is calling for another election.
00:52 The government isn't exactly shying away from the fact that this is a change in policy,
00:57 but they've said that it's a necessary one, that this was not an easy decision, but it's
01:01 the right decision to help people that are struggling with cost of living pressures right
01:06 now.
01:07 Now this still needs to pass through Parliament.
01:09 The government, the coalition, sorry, has not indicated whether they're opposing or
01:15 supporting these changes.
01:17 The government doesn't necessarily need them.
01:20 They can get the Greens and at least two crossbenchers across the line to ensure that these tax cuts
01:26 are passed through Parliament.
01:28 We did hear from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese a short time ago.
01:31 Here's what he had to say.
01:32 I think these are sensible changes.
01:35 We'll argue for it.
01:37 We'll argue for it.
01:38 And the coalition, I've noticed yesterday, Peter Dutton wasn't even saying necessarily
01:45 that they'll vote against it.
01:46 We'll wait and see.
01:47 We'll wait for them to go through their mechanisms as well.
01:52 We'll talk with all of the crossbenchers.
01:55 But these are sensible changes.
01:59 These are our changes.
02:01 The Greens say they will be ensuring that they try to get some changes through.
02:05 They're still saying that the tax system is not fair enough with these changes and they'd
02:09 like to see more for lower and middle income earners.
