Rishi Sunak has set out plans to get rid of disposable vapes to protect children’s health. The prime minister said he is taking “strong action” to “stamp out” youth vaping, following a public consultation on the issue in which almost 70% of respondents were in favour of a ban. However, he insisted that it is "important that we maintain vapes for adult smokers who want to stop." Report by Covellm. 00:00 My job as Prime Minister is to do what I believe is right for the long term of our country.
00:04 And you talk to any parent or teacher, as I've been doing here at this school in Darlington this morning,
00:08 they'll talk about the worrying rise in vaping amongst children.
00:11 Children shouldn't be vaping. We don't want them to get addicted.
00:14 We still don't understand the full long-term health impacts of vaping.
00:18 So it's right that we take strong action to stamp this out.
00:21 That's what we're doing. Banning disposable vapes,
00:23 taking powers to go after the flavours, the appearance, the packaging,
00:28 where vapes are displayed in stores, but also improving enforcement,
00:32 making it easier to levy on-the-spot fines at retailers who shouldn't be selling to kids.
00:37 Taken together, it's a strong set of measures so we can improve our children's health.
00:41 It's the right long-term thing for the country.
00:42 It's important that we maintain vapes for adult smokers who want to stop,
00:46 because for those people, it's obviously preferable that they vape rather than smoke.
00:50 That's why actually we're pioneering the Swap to Stop campaign.
00:54 A million people are being provided with kits to help them through the NHS.
00:58 And actually we're one of the first countries in the world to do a programme like that.
01:02 It's also why we have balanced these proposals,
01:05 targeting the things that are particularly appealing to children.
01:07 And that's what this is about, is protecting children's health.
01:10 That's why the marketing, the flavours, the appearance, where they are displayed in stores.
01:14 And what's clear is it's disposable vapes that are behind the very worrying rise in children's vaping.
01:19 Children disproportionately and overwhelmingly use disposable vapes.
