00:02 Psychologist Victor Goh has shed light on why people fall for scams,
00:06 saying it could be attributed to what is known as the self-serving bias,
00:10 where people believe they are somehow immune to such cons.
00:14 He said the bias leads them to believe that scams can be pulled on others, but not themselves.
00:20 Goh's comments come after the National Scam Response Centre
00:23 reported that more than RM1 billion was lost to online scams over the past year alone.
00:29 He also said scams often target vulnerable groups like the elderly
00:34 and those in urgent need of money because they are susceptible to pressure.
00:38 Goh said phrases such as "I am like you" are frequently used to create a sense of understanding
00:44 and aimed at convincing victims to provide help.
00:47 Meanwhile, criminologist Shankar Durairaja of Unicorp College said
00:51 while scammers engage in similar crimes, their tactics differ each time.
00:56 He said this is why tracking scammers becomes a challenge
01:00 as new online scams related to the latest trends emerge on a weekly basis.
