00:00 >> What's it like defending Patrick Mahomes?
00:02 >> Phew.
00:04 [LAUGH] I think keeping him in the pocket as best as he can is one of
00:09 the big things, just cuz he loves to improvise and do all that stuff.
00:14 And then full on effort, Kyle called it defensive line stamina,
00:20 is the key to the game.
00:22 >> [INAUDIBLE] playing unselfishly,
00:24 have you dealt with players being selfish at all this season?
00:29 >> No, no, not outwardly or anything like that.
00:33 It's just the way you play the game.
00:34 You have to play with the mindset that you're the only guy out there at times.
00:42 It's something you have to rep.
00:45 You don't just turn it on and off when you're a backside player and
00:49 the play's 40 yards away from you.
00:51 It's just human nature to slow down or maybe comes out of your vision for
00:57 a second so you don't see it.
00:58 You think three guys are over there.
01:00 It's a mindset of just going and going and going and going and going and
01:03 going and that's what we need to do.
01:07 >> Kyle talked this week about he wanted everybody to get their affairs in order,
01:12 basically family, travel, accommodations, all the stuff that goes with this.
01:16 Was that all done for you?
01:18 >> Yeah, I don't deal with that.
01:20 My mother does.
01:21 >> And what's the- >> The hardest part of dealing with
01:24 Andy Reid offense with all that.
01:26 He has bells and whistles, so are you emotions and all that he'll do.
01:30 How does that challenge you guys with the defense?
01:33 >> That's more of a back end type of thing question.
01:36 But he's a great game planner.
01:38 I'm sure he's gonna have some wrinkles for us and
01:41 hopefully we can anticipate some of them and make plays when we need to.
01:45 >> When he got here a little bit over a year ago and how he is now,
01:50 how have you seen his game change?
01:51 >> Who's that?
01:52 >> Rooney.
01:52 >> Rooney.
01:53 I don't know if his game has changed.
01:56 I think he's been playing at a high level ever since he's gotten here and
01:59 he's a valuable piece, a Super Bowl winner.
02:02 And somebody who knows how to get it done.
02:04 >> How does that help you when you have a Super Bowl winner like that on your team?
02:08 >> Just experience, especially at corner where you're left on an island a lot and
02:14 just knowing your technique and what to do and how to cover guys.
02:19 >> From an emotional standpoint, what does it mean to face the same team you guys
02:23 faced in 2019, same coach, same quarterback,
02:26 even the same color uniforms from that day, what does it bring?
02:30 >> It's definitely gonna bring some emotion that I'm trying to hold back until we get
02:35 close, we still have a lot of time so you don't wanna burn out.
02:39 But it's gonna be an intense day.
02:42 >> Does anything stand out about Taylor and Smith when you watch them on film?
02:47 Taylor's, I think, leads the NFL with a ton of penalties.
02:51 Anything stand out when you watch them?
02:53 >> They hold a lot.
02:54 >> Nick, I'm sorry, go ahead.
02:59 >> Okay, go ahead.
03:00 >> I just got stage fright, I'm sorry.
03:02 >> [LAUGH] >> I forgot.
03:04 >> [LAUGH] >> I'll come after you.
03:07 >> It's not good.
03:07 Nick, you talked about coming out with intensity and effort on every single snap.
03:11 How do you ensure that you do that next Sunday for four full quarters and
03:15 not just a portion of the game as is kind of the case the last couple weeks?
03:18 >> I think it starts today.
03:20 I think having two weeks is really good cuz you could kind of just ingrain things
03:24 in your mind game plan wise this week and then just pile on repetitions next week.
03:33 But yeah, it's just having that mindset and
03:36 knowing that if I'm gonna give everything I've got, I gotta be able to get out of
03:41 the game and the next guy has to be fresh and ready to do the same.
03:46 >> Okay, I've got it.
03:47 >> [LAUGH] >> Thank you.
03:50 So we lost on Christmas and there's been a lot of talk about how to change things.
03:54 They've become much more balanced offensively.
03:57 Would you say it's a, I don't know, from what they've shown from Christmas on,
04:02 a dramatically different type of style offense that they're running than what
04:06 you saw in the Super Bowl?
04:09 >> I don't know if I've watched it in sequence like that.
04:13 I have watched that game.
04:15 I've watched the playoff game, but I don't know exactly how they changed.
04:23 >> You played in the Super Bowl recently last year, Christian McCaffrey's first
04:27 game, did you watch that game again?
04:30 And that one was pretty one-sided, what do you remember about that one?
04:34 >> Definitely some things that I need to be ready for,
04:38 cuz they were definitely game planning me a little bit in that game.
04:43 So some things that I need to be ready for Andy Reed to do.
04:47 And just as a defense, we were playing good ball,
04:51 it's just about playing four quarters.
04:53 >> What were the changes in the game?
04:56 >> Some of the cuts and some of the chips and stuff that I could be ready for.
05:02 >> Nick, do you remember the first time that Kyle asked you to speak to the team
05:05 and what kind of emotions that generated in you?
05:08 And have you literally spoken to the team every Saturday since then?
05:12 >> Yeah, I don't remember the first time, which is surprising,
05:18 but I usually remember traumatic experiences.
05:21 >> [LAUGH] >> Was that what it was?
05:25 >> I don't remember.
05:25 >> [LAUGH] >> But no, it's been good for me.
05:31 I've kind of enjoyed kind of dealing with the stress and
05:37 kind of facing something that I'm not used to.
05:41 >> I saw the video of you talking to Brock after the game,
05:44 telling him how much you believed in him, how crazy it was that he was doing what he
05:48 was doing.
05:49 What were you feeling in that moment that made you say that stuff to him?
05:55 >> I don't know if I was feeling anything, I was happy with the one.
05:57 >> You were so young, you were a rookie the last time you were in the Super Bowl.
06:04 What have you learned?
06:07 How did that experience shape you to what you are now?
06:10 And how are you using whatever you learn for the younger guys?
06:15 >> Definitely, you learn a lot going through a long season in 19,
06:20 and you don't understand it as much as a rookie, how hard it is to get there.
06:27 But just how hard you have to play and how locked in you have to be for
06:32 the entire four quarters if you actually wanna win.
06:37 And I learned that and I'm gonna just relay to the guys that there
06:42 has to be a different level of effort, of intensity,
06:47 of unselfishness that you have to get to for every single snap that you're in there.
06:54 >> Does that seem recent or does that seem a million years ago because of COVID?
06:59 >> Seems like a pretty good amount of time ago, honestly, a lot has happened.
07:02 >> You were pretty adamant after that game that you weren't gonna watch it,
07:05 you didn't watch it.
07:06 Have you indeed watched it or been forced to watch it this week?
07:09 >> Yeah, no, I've watched it, yeah.
07:12 >> What kind of feelings did that bring up?
07:16 >> It's definitely just I start sweating a little bit.
07:21 But it's fun to watch, I mean, that's a Super Bowl defense right there.
07:26 And we gotta take a page out of that if we wanna go win it.
07:31 >> What makes you held out the loss?
07:34 >> On which one?
07:35 >> On the third and 15th.
07:39 >> I don't think they had the back view, but yeah, I'm sure, it's Eric Fisher.
07:45 >> Do you think that this defense is playing to the level of that 2019 defense
07:49 in the Super Bowl?
07:50 >> Say what, say that again?
07:52 >> Do you think that your current defense has been playing that intensity level that
07:57 the 2019 unit was playing in that game?
08:00 >> I think we are, just not as consistently as we need to be.
08:04 >> What makes the Chiefs rush an attack tough to stop?
08:07 >> They're running back, runs really hard.
08:10 And then all the other threats that Mahomes and everybody else create,
08:14 kinda open it up cuz you're not expecting as much of a run heavy game.
08:18 And but yeah, they have a really good O-line and
08:23 I think Pacheco has kinda revamped their run game.
08:27 >> Nick, after a loss in the Super Bowl, how long did it take to kinda get past it
08:31 to where it felt fine or how have you gotten to that point?
08:34 >> Yeah, I don't remember exactly, but I remember thinking a lot about it
08:40 in Fort Lauderdale when we weren't allowed to do much of anything.
08:47 >> Nick, you come across as soft spoken and kinda easy going, but
08:51 who in your guys D-line room holds guys accountable to the kinda speed and
08:57 effort and energy you wanna see every game?
09:00 >> I think Chris starts there and tap and definitely me and Eric.
09:06 We try to create a standard over the years that effort is what we do best and
09:13 we definitely need to keep that up.
