Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag on the anniversary of the Munich air crash and facing West Ham
Transcript
00:00 This Tuesday is the Munich anniversary,
00:02 could I ask you what you've learned about the anniversary
00:06 and what you've come to understand during your time at the club?
00:10 I think it tells a lot about the legacy of this club,
00:14 so the DNA of this club, about having big setbacks, tragedy,
00:23 but fight back, fight back also with young players,
00:28 young players who should express resilience,
00:32 like for instance Kobe Mino, his academy product,
00:37 he showed that resilience today,
00:40 but Munich was a disaster for the club,
00:45 and how the club recovered from it,
00:49 but also how individuals recovered from it,
00:52 it was great, such a disaster, you survived this,
00:59 and then a couple of years later you're lifting the biggest trophy
01:04 in European football, that is immense.
01:08 I think we always should remember this,
01:11 that this is the legacy of why Manchester United exists,
01:17 and what we should match as a club, as a team, as an individual.
01:24 Could I just ask, obviously Torma Pusby used a lot of young,
01:28 home-grown players, is that a responsibility that you have
01:31 as manager of Manchester United to try and bring through players from the academy?
01:36 I've always been driven by this motivation,
01:41 and that's one of the reasons why I'm here, to develop young players.
01:47 You need patience, but also you need the right structures,
01:56 you need capable coaches in the academy for football,
02:03 but also other sides, personalities you have to develop,
02:10 and to bring young players in is a big advantage,
02:17 because they know the DNA of the club.
02:21 Last question, Tom.
02:23 Hi, Eric, can I just ask you about Rasmus?
02:25 He's probably played more this season than you may have expected,
02:28 when you brought him in, maybe more than he expected.
02:31 He's had some difficult moments in a struggling team,
02:33 but he's never gone missing.
02:35 What have you made of his attitude and his character this season,
02:38 and the way he's qualified his business with young players?
02:41 He is a great character, he always keeps going.
02:45 He always wants to improve, and you see now the team is better,
02:53 the team is more stable, now we serve the front-line better,
02:57 and he starts scoring.
03:00 You see there's something growing with Messi, with Canaccio,
03:08 with Bruno in the back, also other players from the second and third line,
03:15 so he's coming more into position to score.
03:18 But I can tell you it's not easy for a striker when you have high expectations from yourself,
03:25 and also I think the outside world has high expectations to fulfil that.
03:31 And when it's not working, of course, that is the character every striker needs.
03:38 He gets angry, he gets mad when he's not scoring,
03:42 but also, and that's why we selected him, he has the resilience and calmness
03:49 to perform under that stress.
03:51 He doesn't have any moment that he wants to give up,
03:57 he keeps going, every time he keeps going to put him in the right position.
04:02 I'm happy that he's now starting to score,
04:06 but that counts for many players, for young players,
04:11 I think there's a lot of space for improvement,
04:14 but he's still now on very good levels.
04:16 Okay.
04:17 Thank you.
04:18 You're welcome.
04:18 You're welcome.
