00:00 I'm a little afraid to do the balloon closing. Let's go for it.

00:05 [Laughs]
00:06 Hey, I'm Yara Shahidi and I'm playing Pop Quiz with Marie Claire. Let's go.
00:12 [Balloon pops]
00:14 What is the best gift you've received?
00:16 My pocket watches.
00:18 When I was young, that is literally all I wanted.
00:22 And getting a vintage pocket watch for Christmas was incredible.
00:28 [Balloon pops]
00:29 I was prepared.
00:30 How did you make your first dollar?
00:33 I was six weeks old. The air was brisk.
00:36 And I was in an advertisement, a print ad, for life insurance.
00:42 It was just little baby Yara looking into the camera like, "Wouldn't you want life insurance to protect this?"
00:48 Next one.
00:50 What word makes you cringe?
00:53 I remember in ninth grade, my religion teacher wanted to find words that intentionally made us cringe.
01:02 And so he found the word "pews." It's a color.
01:05 And I just, I don't like any bit of it.
01:07 [Balloon pops]
01:08 Okay.
01:09 What can you not miss on TV or a streamer?
01:13 Okay, I've watched way too many episodes of Atlanta.
01:20 And the reason I say that is that there aren't many episodes, which means I've just continued to watch it and rewatch it.
01:25 I loved rewatching Avatar with my brothers.
01:29 Those are some that come to mind.
01:31 Great British Baking Show.
01:32 Ooh, that's my stuff.
01:34 [Balloon pops]
01:36 Last song you got stuck in your head?
01:38 Oh, easy. The last one was called "Pears" by Weston Estate.
01:42 I have been obsessed.
01:44 [Balloon pops]
01:45 Movie that makes you cry?
01:48 So, you know that one part in Black Panther?
01:50 Like, mind you, I've watched this movie five times.
01:53 But when Michael B. Jordan says, "I was just a young kid running around Oakland," I'm paraphrasing.
01:58 Believing in fairy tales?
02:00 There's something about that line that a single tear trickles down my face, like on cue.
02:04 [Balloon pops]
02:05 Favorite couch snack?
02:07 Other than nectarines, which are my favorite snack, like favorite junk food snack would have to be those kettle corn pop chips.
02:14 Such a delicious snack.
02:16 [Balloon pops]
02:17 One thing people would be surprised to know about you?
02:20 My general party trick is that I sound hollow right here.
02:24 [Knocking]
02:25 [Balloon pops]
02:26 The last book I read?
02:28 It was probably something for my thesis.
02:30 The work that I read was called "Black Images, White Screens."
02:35 Or maybe reversed, "White Screens, Black Images."
02:37 I think there's something so interesting about how granularly he analyzes old movies and films to understand why representation matters.
02:45 [Balloon pops]
02:46 Oh my god, this is such a cool question.
02:49 Do you have any secret talents?
02:51 I dabble in Old English, and the only phrase I've retained after a year of studying it is "The king said," which is, "Se kúningak kwayeth."
03:02 [Balloon pops]
03:03 Chocolate or cheese? Easy, chocolate. I am so lactose intolerant.
03:07 [Balloon pops]
03:08 Last text you sent?
03:10 Oh, it was a picture I sent of my brother, and I sent that to the family group chat because I had a picture of him that happened like a year ago to date, in which he looks like a different human being.
03:19 [Balloon pops]
03:22 What should every woman try at least once in her life?
03:26 Oh, you know one thing I tried? I had a year of saying no.
03:30 Our yeses are extremely powerful, but I know, especially as a young woman and a young woman of color growing up in this world, getting comfortable saying no and not having to justify it is something that takes constant practice.
03:42 So my year of no is a must try.
03:45 And just like that, no more balloons.
03:47 Well, that was Pop Quiz, and I hope you had just as good of a time as I did.
03:52 See you later.
