Transcript
00:00 She's Hollywood royalty who's been in the public eye since she was just 6 years old.
00:05 But through her hit daytime talk show, we're only just getting to know the real Drew Barrymore.
00:11 In an exclusive sit-down for Us Weekly's latest cover story, the 48-year-old host, actress,
00:17 mom, and so much more unveiled her most valuable life lessons.
00:22 First up, stay curious.
00:23 She told us, "I always wanted to make a show that was based on weekly magazines, where
00:28 you could get your pets, your feel-good stories, a person of note, news, pop culture, that's
00:33 everything we do on the show."
00:35 She explained that she's not trying to be the expert, but instead, learn alongside her
00:39 viewers.
00:40 She added, "I like to grow and learn in real time.
00:43 I'm a student.
00:44 I don't want to pretend to be a teacher."
00:45 Even though she grew up in Hollywood and was surrounded by famous people since she was
00:49 born, Drew said that she doesn't need to "party" with the pretty people.
00:53 "I don't have a ton of famous friends," she said.
00:56 "I have connections and relationships in this business, but I'm not at dinner parties
01:00 or on yachts with famous people.
01:02 I detest the schmooze.
01:04 I don't feel comfortable with that put-on.
01:06 I'd rather be armorless and silly."
01:08 Drew reminds herself that one of the most important relationships is how you treat yourself.
01:13 She said, "I'm only figuring out in the last five years how insanely unforgiving I've been
01:18 to myself.
01:19 Probably the most unhealthy thing I've done is my self-talk.
01:23 I had to parent myself, so when I'm worried about how I'm raising my kids, that's a jumping
01:28 off point for self-criticism."
01:30 Self-improvement is a journey for the actress, and part of that was getting sober.
01:34 She shared, "I drank for, oh God, since I was 9, so 35 years.
01:40 And then one day I just thought, 'I'm never going to do this again.'
01:43 Once I got there, I was done.
01:45 But everything didn't fall into place.
01:47 I then had to really go to work and start figuring out how to build myself up and get
01:52 in touch with why I was drinking like that."
01:54 The talk show host also told us that she no longer has toxic relationships with men, and
01:59 that she will not engage in a relationship that is going to take away from her life.
02:03 She said, "I have too many priorities in my kids and my friends and my work.
02:07 I can't imagine bringing someone in who would pee all over that."
02:11 While she knows what to look for now, she's in no rush to find love, saying, "If I focused
02:16 on it, I think I could have a great relationship.
02:19 It's just not where I've been lately.
02:21 But I also have two kids.
02:22 I have so much love.
02:24 I'm so lucky.
02:25 There's nothing missing."
